Favorite piece of equipment for long-distance hike
My hiking partner bought this from REI before we left for the John Muir Trail. I thought it was foolish and would add a lot of extra weight. Well, this bottle is worth its weight in gold. For a trail like the JMT that's got plenty of running water in its streams and lakes, this little bottle saved us an awful lot of time and filtering. We used it constantly and it never let us down. We also liked that we could drop in electrolyte tablets when needed. Highly recommended. Lately REI has been selling this bottle for $20.00 -- a real savings over the $30.00+ when we bought it. I think this is also a great gift for hikers.
Boundary Waters Approved
Served me well on a multi-day trip into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Scooping from the lake is something I always wanted to do and now I can. Worked great.
Very happy thus far
Going to Morocco, did not want to leave more plastic bottles behind. I really like this so far. Regarding it taking more 'suck' to get the water out I initially had that problem until my husband pointed out that I had not opened the spout fully. Problem solved.
Peace of mind
I’m happy I did this purchased just in case of an emergency.
Great Water Filter
I've been using this hiking in the Wichita Mountains and I'll have to say I'm impressed. Doesn't matter what's in the whether dirt or algae it filters it out and the water tastes great!
Easiest filter that I have ever used!!!
This product was awesome!!! I was out kayaking and ran out of pre-filtered water. So I dipped the container into the lake and I had clean water on the go. Even though the container is a little heavy (for my backpacking requirements), I would still take on my next trip.
Only in a pinch
The water that comes from this (after filtering tap water) tastes bad and makes your mouth feel very dry. I am sure this would be tolerable if there were no other options. The bottle seems nicely designed though.
Sucks in a lot of air
This seems like a nice option for day hiking... but it's quite a down-side that it requires a lot more "sucking tension" than my camelback hose, for example, and that however I try I seem to suck in a big mouthful of air with every small mouthful of water. Again, this is not an issue with my camelback, as the camelbak bladder doesn't have air in it (you can remove any air after filling it by turning it upside down and sucking out the air before stowing it in your pack). There is an air-vent on the top of the bottle-- and I've tried covering it with my finger while sucking, but that doesn't help. This is an issue as it involves an instant feeling of bloat and belching of air! So, it's kind of a lot of work for a mouthful of water. I'm not sure it would provide enough practical hydration on the trail. I may try the Katadyn version of this integrated bottle, and see if the design is better.
Had a bad taste
I plan on returning this. It had a strong plastic-type flavor. It decreased over use but still doesn't taste good. I rinsed the bottle part with warm soapy water in hopes that would help but didn't. I bought this while in LA in hopes of improving tap water flavor but it just made it worse.
Compact life saver
I brought 2 metal lifestraws I’m with the search and rescue in nevada. We are always concerned with weight in our backpacks. Life straw provides compact , light and life saving equipment. I tried it in a relative clear rapid moving stream. Water tasted good and refreshing. No side effects a few hours later. Next step will be more turbid water. Just need a little more guts to try LoL
