Compared to a 20 lumen headlamp that I have been using on Mountaineering trips to the Sierras, Black Diamond's 100 lumen Storm Headlamp is luxurious for me. Batteries are even included, but it can feel a bit heavy with its 4 AAA.
This is the 2nd one I've purchased. Not becuase the other one is dead, but because it is so good. Super bright and great for spotting rattlesnakes in the Arizona desert where I do most of my hiking. Haven't needed it in rain, but it's supposed to be waterproof. Highly recommended.
One thing about LEDs that can bug me is how little distance they actually illuminate--THIS One's Different! The spot actually lights a great distance, and the other 2 light settings work well, too. Not sure you'd notice, but this lamp has a dimmer on it, too. No doubt will handle whitewater as well!
I've used this on numerous camping trips after my old incandescent finally wore out. Numerous rainstorms, dropped out of a moving car, and stepped on and it's still going. Batteries last quite awhile but I always bring spares.
I used this for a four week backpacking trip, mailed food and supplies to myself along the trail. This headlamp is excellent. Battery life is very good. I really like the on/off lock to prevent accidentally turning it on while in my pack. Big on/off button works good with gloved hands. It has a very bright beam, plus, it can be gradually reduced to save battery life and when around camp. I've also used this for bikepacking, can see far in front of the trail while peddling. This is water proof. It didn't die or short out when I walked in some pretty heavy rain through thick timber for a couple of nights while hunting off trail in the Colorado mountains. More money wouldn't buy you a better one, might be different, but not better.
The bright spot mode is EXTREMELY useful for route finding in the dark. It will however drain the batteries quickly so I only use it briefly to find my way then I go back to dim mode. The light is very durable and has been with me to Patagonia and through many other alpine adventures. It's been rained on and knocked around without issue. My only gripe is that the sliding headband adjustment tends to loosen up.
High quality, very bright light, with lots of control options & with a little practice you can turn different lights on/off, dim, etc. fairly intuitively, all with a single button. But compared to other single-strap headlamps I've owned, this one comes in a little heavy. I think the brightness and features are worth the weight, but the weight is why it didn't get a 5.
I bought this light for a backpacking trip i have not gone on yet but I use it around the house all the time. I love it.
Purchased for my wife because I was so happy with my current Storm. Great light for the quality, bright enough for your needs, respectable batter life and waterproof. Like the red setting for night vision and the fact that it has a button lock. Use it or you can have a dead battery.
Awesome product for a great price. The hands-free aspect of any headlamp is convenient but I appreciate the brightness of the light, as well as the ability to turn on the red light or the blinking light. The fact that the light dims and tilts is also great for reading in the tent.
