Must have for outdoor enthusiasts.
I just got this pack in the mail and my wife and I took it out today for a short day hike on fairly rugged terrain (steep rocky hills). While i will attempt to highlight pros and cons, I will say this child carrier is a must have for parents on the go and outdoor enthusiasts. Also, some specs on my wife and I to help you conceptualize fitment as you read. I am 5'11" and 210lbs. My wife is 5'0" and 120lbs. Our son is 2'7" and 20 lbs. 1. Suspension system: By this I am referring to the hip belt, shoulder straps, sternum strap, back panel, and load lifter straps. Overall, very comfortable. The hip belt, shoulder straps, and sternum strap are adjustable enough that they fit snugly and comfortably on us both. The only downside is no matter how much we play with the straps, the load lifters do very little to pull the load snugly against our upper back (google load lifters if you do not know what they are or why they're important). We have been avid backpackers for nearly a decade, so we know how this should feel. Ultimately, it felt very comfortable and stable throughout our day hike. 2. Child seat: The area that holds the kid. My son seemed very happy and comfortable throughout the hike and never whined to get out. I take that as his seal of approval. There are several straps to which toys can be clipped to, and the built in sun shade works really well and tucks away cleanly. It was also easy for me to reach back and hand him his water cup without taking off the pack. The child seat also has two adjustable stirrups for the kid to put his feet in. My son is only 17 months old and doesn't like them on his feet, but in a year it may be more tolerable, and certainly more comfortable as he gets taller - otherwise his legs will just hang all day. 3. Storage: There is one main storage compartment which is large enough for three water bottles and some food. While not huge (I think it's a volume of 18 liters?), it is certainly amply enough to hold anything you'd need for your child throughout the day (diapers, wipes, water, food, toys, etc.). There is also a small pouch on each side of the hip belt, each big enough to just barely fit an iPhone 6. There are also a couple of spandex pockets to tuck things into (deep enough to hold a banana or bottle of sunscreen) as well as one larger pocket which could accommodate something the size of an original ipad. Frame: I love the fold out stand. Makes it so simple to load up and take off with my son strapped in. Although, at over 7lbs, this pack is heavy before even loading up. I am not sure how this compares to other child carriers but in comparison, this is the same weight as my 80 liter packpacking pack. Hydration: Large enough built in compartment to hold a 3 liter bladder, with a precut slit to run your hose. This is very nice!! Durability: Time will tell, but seems to be very well constructed of very durable material. The only thing I currently worry will have a limited lifespan are the straps and clips which pull down and secure the front of the sun shade. In summary, excellent child carrier, but with a few cons which prevent my 5 star rating. I know this review was long, but I hope it helps you in assessing your purchase!
Extreme Hiking...this is it!!!
I purchased this so I could take my two year old granddaughter hiking with me in the Big Horn Mountains. She just turned two, weighs 30 pounds. She loves it. 9 miles the first day on Elk trails and down timber. 7 Miles the next and 6 the third. I never had any pain, she couldn’t wait to get in her seat, three point security harness for her, she held on to the straps when I would be crawling with her on my back, sun sheild was perfect, padded rest in the front worked great when she fell asleep, easy on and off. I had people wanting to buy it when I was done. Worth every penny!!! I’m 45, 5’6” and 125# and this fit me very well.
Great product
Stoked about this carrier pack! In the few weeks we've had this pack it has already gotten plenty of use, nearly 60 miles and no complaints. One thing to make note of is that it is heavy without kid and gear so if you're a smaller person there might be something else out there that works better.
Very comfortable kick carrier pack.
First and foremost I don't have any comparison to any other kid carrier on the market. What I have found is that this pack is very comfortable for both myself as the carrier and for my daughter. I love how soft and plush the seat is for the baby. Since I am used the military ruck weight the weight was not an issue. It is very sturdy so it doesn't tip over easy. The material is well made so I haven't had any issues with things coming apart or cracking. The only thing that I wish could have been designed better is the hood shade for the baby. I do understand that it is just a shade and not a weather shield but I would have liked the additional option of pulling the shade back in stages for various levels of protection from wind, rain, and sun. Overall I am very pleased with this product.
Impressed with Deuter!
I bought the comfort kid I for my child years ago. I lost all sorts of hardware, the strap for holding my child in and the sunshade hardware. I thought, how in the world am I going to find those specific pieces without having to buy the whole sunshade......well I emailed deuter and they were so fast at responding and took such good care of me that I felt like I just had to write a review for them. This is the only review I've ever written but in a nutshell, I love my pack and you can't beat how the company takes care of you after the fact.
Must have child carrier for outdoor parents
Bagged multiple peaks with this pack with my babe in tow...love it! Comfortable for babe and me on long hikes! Can’t recommend this pack enough. Just wish it came with the rain fly too.
Awesome pack!!!
I debated buying this pack due to price, but it was well worth the money. If you adjust it correctly, it is very well balanced and fitted. Due to the high back and pillow your child can sleep in it comfortably while you hike. My son is five now and he weighs 38 pounds. I still carry him in it when he gets tired on long hikes. Cant recommend this pack enough.
Great Pack
We love this pack. And more importantly, so does our son. At 11 months old and 26 lbs he is excited when we pull it out and he seems very comfortable in it. He has fallen asleep on numerous occasions and other times he is spurring us to walk faster while looking around bright and happy... Adjusting the pack was quite easy and I think it is balanced (contrary to other reviewers). I'm 6'3, 185 lbs. Taking the pack off is a little tricky sometimes.
Walks/Hikes Are Amazing Now!!!
My son fits some comfortable in the carrier. Arms and legs can move but he is extremely secure. When he's tired of the scenery he just takes a nap with no issues. All the Pockets make it easy to carry snacks and first aid kit with no issue. The canopy is perfect and blocks the sun on those sunny days. I just love our new carrier!!!
Great Child Carrier Pack
This is the first child carrier pack that I have owned, and I'm very happy I went with the Kid Comfort 3. I had narrowed down my choices to the Osprey Poco AG or one of the Deuter Kid Comfort (KC) series. After reading reviews about problems with the Osprey brand hip belts, I wanted to try it at the store. Sure enough, I only had the pack on for about 10 minutes and it already felt like it was digging into my hip bone. Unfortunately they did not have any of the Deuter packs at the store, but I decided to go with it anyway based on the issues with the Osprey. Once I decided I was going with Deuter, I had to decide between the KC Air, KC 2, and KC 3. I quickly ruled out the Air because it is not compatible with a hydration bladder. (Side note, if you're only going on shorter hikes the Air might be a good option. After using the KC 3 several times, my back definitely gets pretty sweaty. The KC Air back system is supposed to help with that, so if you're concerned about ventilation and you don't care about not having a hydration bladder, this might be a good choice. It's also lighter than the KC 2 or 3). Once I ruled out the Air, it was down to the KC 2 or 3. I went with the 3 due to the additional storage and the integrated sunroof. Despite what the REI website says, the KC 3 does indeed have more storage space than the KC 2 (check out Deuter's website to verify). Also, having a sunroof was critical for me, so if I went with the KC 2 I would have been buying the sunroof and rain cover that is sold separately. Because of the additional storage space and the integrated sunroof (which after using the KC 3 several times is very convenient) I decided to spend the extra money and get the KC 3 (the KC 3 is really only $20 more than the KC 2 when you factor in the purchase of the sunroof / rain cover). As I said, I could not be happier with the KC 3. The harness system is very easy to adjust, and although my wife has not tried it yet I'm confident that the pack could be adjusted to fit her. The hip belt, shoulder straps, and load adjusters are also easy to adjust and they distribute the load well. Very comfortable for me, especially the hip belt. No issues whatsoever with it digging into my hip bone. The only downside is that my daughter (14 months old) has trouble falling asleep in the pack. Overall she seems to be very comfortable when she is in it, but when she tries to sleep her head is not in the right position to reach the chin pad. This could simply be operator error as other reviewers of the KC 3 have pictures of their kid sleeping comfortably, but I wanted to point it out nonetheless. Few other things to note. First, the "integrated sunroof" on the KC 3 is different from the "sun and rain cover" that is sold separately for other Kid Comfort packs. The integrated sun roof on the KC 3 is just a sunroof, it does not include a rain cover. You can't tell that from the pictures on REI's website, but if you check out the sun and rain cover on Deuter's website you can see the difference. Second, the storage space in the KC 3 is surprisingly good (and again, it is indeed more than the KC 2). The pockets don't look huge in pictures, but they actually fit a good amount of stuff. Finally, the fold out stand works great. Easy to operate and sturdy. Sorry for the long review but I wanted to touch on everything, hope that this helps. I would definitely buy this pack again.
