Ripping seams - these sacks do not last!
I bought three of these stuff sacks last season, and have used them 3-4 times for backpacking. The seams are breaking on two of the sacks, and the lip is torn out completely on the third. This has been a hugely disappointing purchase; typically my stuff sacks last years without ripped seams or tears! These are not constructed well and do not last. I wish I could return mine!
Easy does it!
Shrinks a military sleeping system (black bag and bivy) by more than half. Enough to stuff into a 45 liter pack. Makes the bag about the size of a volleyball. As to the reviews bashing the bag's durability - it is ripstop nylon. Not ballistic kevlar reinforced cordura. Be gentle. I typically will put downward pressure on the sack from above, with my knee. Then I gently cinch the straps to tight. If you yank on a strap pulling all the pressure from one point, you'll break any compression sack. I used to buy ballistic-kevlar-cordura for everything but it's really heavy. Take care of your gear, and it takes care of you.
Makes a massive difference in packing a large bag
A wonderful product that allowed me to take a very large sleeping bag and shrinking it down to the size of a football. I have a 31 degree/Long REI bag for reference. On the left of my picture you can see it easily fills the laundry sack it's stored in, but once in the stuff sack (21 L) it's shorter than my coffee table and is about the size of a full sized football. Side note I stuffed this by myself without an extra hand or two so I bet I could get it even smaller. As for poor reviews on the straps - yea if you yank on them I can see something repping/stretching. Just be patient and I have no doubt it'll be fine. It's the perfect price point for this product as well. Absolutely grabbing another for my girls bag!
Good gear at a slightly lower price point
Like almost all other REI branded products, these get the job done as advertised at a slightly lower price point than other brands of compression sack. Can't speak for long term durability as I've only used them once, but if I see any gross failures I'll edit them in later. The only small complaint I have, its more of an annoyance, is that when the straps are loosened to the buckle to access the bag they have a tendency to slip completely free of the buckle forcing you to have to re-thread them. Happened several times during a recent trip. Its a minor nuisance and not anything that would stop me from purchasing this bag again.
lack of durability
Purchased this compression sack about a month ago for a backpacking trip in yosemite I have planned in april. First impression was great. My sleeping bag became much easier to pack and unpack. Worth the money if you are overnighting. Only downside is the first time I used it, it ripped.. not horribly but it did rip along the seam right above one of the straps. I managed to repair it with some sewing and probably made it stronger. I have packed my sleeping bag about 5 times in the past month and today it completely fell apart inside of my backpack. It's possible there was a defect from day one but I'm not impressed and would not buy this compression sack again.
Great product great price
A friend convinced me to buy a 16 liter before our backcountry biking trip. I love it! I could fit my sleeping bag in (sorry, I don't know specs on it it's pretty old), along with extra leggings and socks. I could get it to compress to half it's size. Don't forget, while it's durable the fabric can still only take so much. Still, I had no issues but I'll probably pack it a little less next time so as to not stress the seems too much. I ended up buying an 11 liter yesterday for my rain suit and extra clothes for this weekend's backpacking trip. Can't wait. I've already recommended them to a couple people.
Capable Compression Sack
I used this compression stuff sack for the first time on my Great Smoky Mountains Appalachian Trail section hike for my sleeping bag and it held up very well. The construction was good, the price was reasonable and the sack actually did quite a bit to bring down the total space of my bag in my pack. My only real complaint is how difficult it can be to align the compression lines up and to get the fabric lid on top to fit correctly when the bag is full. It's not impossible by any means, but it did take a little while of finagling to make everything line up correctly and evenly. Other than that, no major issues with the sack, the construction or the performance.
failed after 1 use, was refused replacement
Looks nice, performed terribly. I bought this compressions sack almost exactly 1 year ago. I was attending a dance weekend in vermont, and needed a way to fit all my cold weather gear into my tiny little carry on suitcase. The seams and stictching on the top section failed after one use. I took it back upon return, but as I didnt' have a receipt, was told too bad. I use it so infrequently, that I forget, but it's very irksome. Same type of travel this weekend, same terrible failure, although now it REALLY doesn't work as it's become completley unraveled. Two uses and done. It's junk, with terrible customer service behind it. Avoid.
< half the weight of previous compression sacks
Bought the 11 and 16 to figure out what sizes fit our bags, wife's Zero degree Montbell spiral bag (the only kind we buy) needed the 16 (tight fit) (assume my 15 degree long will probably need the same) the 40 degree fiberfill bags (long and standard) fit in the 11. All I've done so far is try several bags in each but haven't had any of the ripping problems mentioned here but I did torque the sacks down snug.
Shredded on first use
Didn't even make it out onto the trail. When loading the 6 liter version, the fabric shredded when I tugged the top to push my jacked into the bottom of the bag. The seam just ripped off.
