Features

  • With a European Norm (EN) lower-limit rating of 29°F, this bag is suitable for 3-season use
  • REI double-protection design combines water-repellent fills with waterproof / breathable fabric at the hood, sides and footbox, the areas most likely to touch a damp tent wall
  • On top of the bag, where superior loft and warmth are key, the bag is filled with water-repellent 700-fill-power duck down
  • On the bottom is resilient Primaloft® Sport insulation, which performs well in a compressed under-bag space
  • Ripstop nylon shell also features a durable water repellent finish to further protect the bag's insulations
  • Performance fit keeps weight low and thermal efficiency high
  • REI in-the-round design puts vertical baffles in side walls to wrap you in warmth and create a better fit than bags that use only horizontal baffles
  • Contoured hood, insulated face muffler and full-length draft tube all work to keep warmth in
  • Differentiated hood and neck drawcords simplify adjustments; antisnag zipper works smoothly
  • Most REI backpacking bags can be zipped to other REI backpacking bags; women's bags zip on the right, unisex on the left
  • The REI Flash Sleeping Bag includes a nylon stuff sack and a large cotton storage bag
  • REI Co-op brand is certified to The Climate Label; we actively fund efforts to reduce carbon emissions across our business and support climate projects around the world
Temperature ratings are intended as a guideline to help you compare products, rather than a guarantee of warmth, since many different factors contribute to your comfort while you sleep. Our backpacking bags are rated for temperature according to an independent testing protocol: International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 23537. Testing is based on a person wearing one base layer and a pair of socks, sleeping on an insulated surface with a minimum R-value of 5.38.

Each bag then gets 2 ratings: the Comfort rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "cold sleeper" comfortable, and the Lower Limit rating is the lowest temperature at which the bag will keep the average "warm sleeper" comfortable. For REI Co-op brand nongendered sleeping bags, we provide an overall temperature rating that falls between the Comfort and Lower Limit ratings.

Did the job
I partially agree with the reviewers that claim this is a bag geared for back sleepers but I am a side sleeper and the bag still does the job. I bought this for an 8 day hike to Yosemite NP and on two mornings we woke up with frost covering the tents. I found that by adding a Sea to Summit thermoliner, long underwear and a thin fleece shirt I was reasonably warm even in sub-freezing temperatures. As for when I was side sleeping, I managed to keep warm by leaving the bag flat and opening up the side zip just a tiny bit to let my face out. In general, I really like the weight and loft but side sleepers do have to compromise with this bag.

Yikes!
I write this review somewhat reluctantly, because I have many REI products that I love (especially the tents - my old model half-dome 2 is amazing) and it's a great company. The return policy alone lets me know that they are interested in customer satisfaction and having long-term relationships with their customers. This bag does not change that, but that said, this was worthy of a review. So, here goes my long review.... There are some significant problems with this bag. I actually just bought the bag during the anniversary sale a couple of days ago, and I was pretty optimistic. I liked the size, the weight, the temperature rating and the value. I decided to test it out up at Tahquitz meadow in SoCal and another spot nearby. Tahquitz is at about 8,000' and had a 36 low overnight. The nearby spot was warmer, probably 42 degrees (I didn't see the temp as my bag with keychain thermometer was not in the vestibule that night). Tahquitz meadow had some frost in the morning, with a very little bit of condensation inside the tent in the morning and a slight bit of frost on the outside in the morning. The next spot was quite dry and warmer. I'm 6.0', 190, for size reference, which is relevant. And I've used mummy bags for years with no issue. Conceptually, the bag is great. The underside is a waterproof/water repellent material with very little to no insulation (it would get squished down and useless anyway) and the top has down insulation where it is really needed. Awesome. But reduced to practice, the bag did not perform. The main reason for this is that there is not enough down or other insulation around the bottom edges. Basically, it is a perfectly aligned amount of down on the top that stretches just barely to the lower edges - but no further. So, what happens is, unless you are actually a mummy, or sleep akin to a dead person, any variation in your body position will cause the non-insulated areas on the bottom edge of the bag to be exposed to the air, or even worse, the ground off the edge of your sleeping pad. The result is very uncomfortable. It's drafty. Very drafty. I've never actually had this problem with a sleeping bag. But it's no fun. And while you may never actually get cold overall (the rating is pretty accurate I think), you will be in a constant battle against cold spots. And it's weird, I've never felt too confined in a mummy bag, but when every movement is punishable by cold spot, it becomes exceedingly confining. This problem is magnified for side sleepers. The bag is a little more confining than other mummy bags I have been in before to begin with (it's narrow), but because there is no real insulation on the bottom, you can't just flip sideways in the bag like an earthworm and expect your rear to be reasonably warm. Nope, if you flip the whole bag with you sideways, your hindquarters will be exposed with the non-insulated part of the bag and be quite chilly. So you end up having to carefully slither around inside of the bag to try to make sure the bottom of the bag stays on bottom if you want to stay warm. With a pretty narrow mummy bag, that's tough to do, much less while half-asleep, especially with no clear features delineating the top from the bottom (and at night in the dark on the inside of a sleeping bag, the only distinguishable feature is the zipper). And inevitably, your rear will get cold in the process. And then, if you have previously cinched the drawstrings around your face into a small opening to stay warm, and are finally positioned sideways, do you know where that opening/breathing hole ends up? Your ear. That's right, your ear. You will have a well-ventilated, freezing cold ear, and you will be breathing into the side of a bag. And the all-too-awkwardly positioned drawstrings will be dangling right in your earhole (better than in your eye I suppose). The innovation on this bag is really cool. I love the mix of materials, the weight, all of it. For a dead-to-the-world back-sleeper, this could possibly be the best bag ever (if you are that kind of sleeper, buy this bag now!). And with a few more inches of wrap-around down or other insulation coverage on the edge/bottom portion, it might be workable for medium-thrashers as well, especially if it is widened up a bit to accommodate movement in the bag. But as it is, if you move around much at all, beware, it will be ultra-ultra-ultra frustrating and uncomfortable. You may curse at length. Unfortunately, as a mummy bag, I don't think the concepts built into this bag really work. So - until it's fixed up a bit, I'm going to be returning this bag, and I will very likely be picking up a solid down quilt, where I think much of the inspiration for this design probably derived. Great attempt on this bag, but I don't think it's quite there yet.

Great Value, dependable.

I purchased this bag for a thru-hike on the Pacific Crest Trail and used it nearly every night for about 150 days strait. For the price, I have never seen a better value for a piece of gear. The weight and price of the bag drew me in, but I was worried about the durability and how it would hold up in the colder temps. After a 5-month backpacking trip and 4 washes, this bag is still in great shape and I still use it often. So the durability has far exceeded my expectations. I felt the temperature rating was accurate. When temperatures dropped below freezing I would put on my down jacket and pants. I never had a night where I was uncomfortably cold and kept up all night. The size of the bag was comfortable for me as well. I am 5' 8" and 145lbs.

Very impressive!

First, the long option is a godsend for me. At 6'4" I run into problems with most normal sized bags. The long option was a perfect length of me. It was a little snug sleeping on my side but that is by design for the mummy style. I've only had this bag out once so far. It got down to 30 degrees that night and it was so warm I had to take off my socks and Thermoball. I do sleep a little hot, but the bag seems to be rated correctly. It packs down small and seems like it could get much smaller with a compression sack. Overall it's a great bag, definitely recommend.

Stayed warm and dry

Slept two nights outside in spring with lows around 40. No tent, just slept on my airpad. Condensation formed and covered everything outside, including the outside of this bag. The inside stayed dry, so there is a plus. I am 6'2" and probably weighed in at 220 lbs at the time and I had no trouble with the interior space. Another plus. Every part of me stayed warm, except my feet. This is the only con, as the bag is rated for 32F I believe? However, 90% of the time I am sleeping in a tent when it is this cold(40F). I assume being in the tent will keep the temps a bit warmer than the raw outside temps. So that is why I give this 4 stars, instead of 5. For a down sack, 3 season, price point probably can't be beat.

Saved the day

I bought this puppy just before going on a week-long bike/camping trip through the Pennsylvania Alleghenies. Boy am I glad I did! Even though it was a warm early fall, it gets cold in the Alleghenies at night, and I could not have been happier when I was snuggled in my tent. Even when it got to the lower limit of the temperature range - low 30s - I was warm and comfortable. On top of that, this bag is super small and light-weight when packed, so it took very little space in my pannier. Incredible! I love this bag, and am going to have to put my name on it so when my son "borrows" it, I can still get it back!

Loved this bag....

I purchased this bag in tall size to hike Inca Trail. I'm 6'2", 165#, and a warm sleeper, and used it with a pad. We had hard frosts 2 nights above 12k' and this bag kept me toasty. I ended up losing layers and opening zippers. Can't recommend this more highly.

Great bag

I was looking for a light weight bag for my weekend trips. I'm 5,9 195 lbs and this bag fits me great. Plenty of room around the shoulders for me. The first night was in the mid 30s and i was very warm all night. Packs up small and leaves me lots of room in pack.

Warm and cozy

Last weekend was the true test for me. My camping/running adventure turned rainy and windy and COLD! In this bag I was cozy and able to sleep! I usually wake up at some point with frozen toes while camping and for the first time ever haven't experienced that since having this sleeping bag.

Light and Warm

Used last summer on the JMT and loved it. It packs small, lofts well, and dries quick (for down). Its nice and light too and I plan on using it in the PCT in a couple years!
