The jacket is nice, but I would not buy another one at close to full price because my original Theta AR fell apart sitting in my closet and they would not fix or replace it. The Gore-Tex tape fell off. True it happened when it was very old, but my 23 year old Marmot jacket has not fallen apart - and the Theta jacket had very little wear. So fine, they say they have a lifetime warranty and will fix things. When I sent it in, they said they were not able to fix it because the tape would not stick due to it having skin oil on it. They wouldn't exchange it for a new one either. They offered a new one at a discount.
I had this for one season. Meaning around 15-20 days of snowboarding. The shell is made of some sort of fabric coated with stuff. Mine is already wearing thin. I am a snow boarder. I can't wear my side down like this.
Own a six year old Arcteryx Theta AR jacket which has been used only a few times. After the first wash, exactly according to the Arcteryx specification, the gluing of the drawstrings have solved. After I had to send the jacket to Switzerland (shipping 29.90 €, insured) to the Arcteryx Repair Center, I was told that this is a known delamination problem. Re-bonding is not possible, since this would be solved again in a very short time. A replacement jacket was rejected because of the age of six years. The advertised lifetime warranty applies only to the "Lifetime" of a jacket and this is apparently already at Arcteryx at six years. Customer service for such a high-priced jacket is absolutely unacceptable. Can absolutely not recommend this jacke.
I purchased this jacket as a Christmas present to myself. I was impressed with how comfortable the fit was with the Epsilon LT I purchased earlier in the fall, I needed something that was wind/rainproof to accompany it when needed. When wearing both, warmth is not an issue and if it gets a little warm, I just open up the pit zips. It's great to see moisture just wick off. The shoulders are reinforced to take the load of backpack straps. I've always thought that Arc products were pricey, but now that I own some, I am an Arc junkie. Just a heads up about this jacket...it runs a little bigger than normal. My Epsilon is a large, but this jacket is a medium.
Owned this jacket for 12 years, took excellent care, and only wore it for outdoor adventures - never day-to-day stuff. Waterproofing finally wore out and sent it to Arcteryx (it doesn't go to Europe like another review stated) to see if it could be repaired. Arteryx told me it couldn't be repaired, and they offered me a new jacket as a warranty repair!!! 12 years and it's completely replaced on warranty! Now that's some great service. Other reviewers may whine and tell a different story - but mine is the truth! I was speechless! The best shell you can buy for conditions under 14,000 feet! Hands down.
I've now owned this coat for three years and I still get excited when I get to wear it. It feel great, and is easily the most versatile coat I've ever owned. I'm part of a film crew that travels around the world and there is yet to be a location where I don't bring this coat. First of all, it can fold to be extremely small which is vital for me as I bring a lot of gear travelling. But it's also performed in some extreme environments. Two examples come to mind: We were filing in 40 degree heat on the Vietnam/China border when it started to rain harder than I've ever seen. I popped on the Theta with just a short sleeve shirt underneath and I was able to stay completely dry and cool, the worst part was that it beaded the rain so well, that it ended up rolling onto my pants! The other occasion Where I can't imagine life without the Theta was in Iceland. It was cold, and very, very wet. I was able to layer an ATOM AR Hoodie underneath the Theta and it was like a dream come true. Warm, stylish and dry. I can't recommend this coat enough, it's truly amazing.
I wish to express my dissatisfaction about a Jacket, Theta AR Jacket of Arcteryx. After less than a year the Jacket is detaching internal welds. Thank you Arc'teryx.
Until I decided to bridge the steep price gap between this and competing brands similar shell-jackets, I simply didn't know what justified the price gap and found it extravagantly over-priced. Now I know exactly how it justifies that price to the point where I can't live without it. I bought my first Arc'teryx Theta AR back in 2013 and I still have that same jacket now, although I've just ordered a new one exactly like it (just smaller size due to smaller bodysize now). It has been around the world with me and had its debut in Greenland on a 10-day expedition in the south-western part of the land with backpacks, strenuous activities on and along gushing rivers and dramatic changes in weather several times a day. It's without a doubt the best jacket you can bring on such an adventure and it almost saved my life on other expeditions later on where the weather turned against us and the hood design made it possible to move on and away from the dangerous weather conditions rather than stranding in the middle of them. I tied the brilliantly designed hood so tightly around my skull that I was just able to peep out and follow the track without freezing too much. That night I felt like the jacket saved my life! And I've never after that experience felt any reluctance when recommending this rather expensive jacket to everyone I meet. I might add as well that I've used this jacket as my main jacket for work in the close protection industry and the versatile nature of it, to no big surprise to me, made it feel purpose-built for this as well. Now I use it in the Scandinavian climate on my everyday-commute and it's brilliant for that as well. This is just the ultimate shell-jacket (a lot of) money can buy.
I am 6'2" and weigh 175 pounds. I purchased an earlier iteration of this jacket in a size M and the fit was perfect. That being said, I normally wear size L tops in order to achieve the length I need. This jacket is cut slim and athletic. It is also extremely durable. After spending 5 years around skis, packs, ice tools, whippets, etc., this jacket has only a few nicks that needed some tape. Pockets are perfect size and location for a technical jacket made for the mountains. Pricey but totally worth it at this point. While I do think you can buy a comparable jacket for about half the price, this one has the slightly better durability and features to make it worthwhile if you are either rich or going to use it often and for a long time!
I recently took my Theta AR on a trip to Costa Rica (late November, tail end of rainy season). It rained most of the days we spent there so I got a lot of use out of the jacket and it worked great. I was glad I took it instead of a smaller 'water resistant' jacket I considered because it did a much better job of keeping the rain out. It takes up a little more room than shorter jackets, but it still fit easily with many other goodies (and spouse/kid's rain jacket) in a small (REI Flash18) day pack when I wasn't using it. The quality is top notch, from my experience.
