Grommets way too weak
This tarp is solidly waterproof. Sustained TORRENTIAL rains and not a drop of water got through. 14'x12' is a great size for over a picnic table at a campsite, as it gives you some room to work on the ends. Problem is the grommets. Using REI tarp poles, the grommets busted through at both peaks upon re-tightening the slack out of the tarp and lines the morning after rain. It was not a overly forceful amount of pull I was providing. This tarp, while nicely waterproof, is too light to put any reasonable strain on it. You're better off with a regular weight blue tarp from the hardware store.
Good price, not very durable
I bought this tarp to use as a basic shelter while backpacking in the warmer months. The second time I pitched it, as an A-frame, one of the grommets popped out. Granted, the weave of the nylon is pretty coarse, but I expected it to hold up better. Taking the price into account, this is still a good deal overall - it's large, versatile, and has repelled light/moderate wind and rain without a problem. (I folded a small rock inside the tarp and tied cord around it as a replacement tie-out point).
Not so all purpose
Bought this to cover a trailer on a 300 mile Spokane-Seattle drive to protect from rain. I knew this was probably a little outside it's purpose, but the grommets made me believe it would be okay if tied down properly. Not the case, after 30 miles two grommets had ripped out and the tarp was basically disintegrating throughout the drive. Tarp is just a single layer, not double like heavier duty ones from a hardware store, I'd only recommend this for under a tent, maybe..
Best Footprint
I mean, $6 and you get a perfect footprint. More durable that “ultralight” footprints that are $60+. And you don’t feel bad throwing it down on twigs and rocks, because it’s durable and cheap. I would never buy anything different.
Grommets fell off immediately, poor quality
I've been happy with and bought previous tarps from REI. After I bought the 14 x 12ft one to use urgently during the torrential storm that slammed the west coast 10/24/21, I noticed immediately this tarp felt cheaper in quality and witnessed >2 grommets fall off just from removing it from its packaging. The rest of the tarp has worked fine so far but this makes me question its durability. I will keep it because it seems too much trouble to return such a large and unwieldy tarp, especially when still wet from the storm, but I do hope REI will review its quality control better.
Favorite thing in my backpack
After many trips of balancing my backpack on rocks, trying to keep it out of the dirt, I decided to pick up this tarp and cut it into a small ground sheet. By far the best decision. Now when I get to camp, I pull out the tarp and throw my backpack on it. Cooking is a breeze because I don't need to worry about getting dirt on my pots, plates, and utensils. I don't need to look around for a rock to sit on if the ground is wet and sharing food has never been easier. It's light weight, durable, and easy to work with should you want to convert it into a smaller ground sheet or pack cover.
It's a Tarp!
I picked this up as a makeshift tent footprint for a tent for which the purchased footprint did not arrive (not purchased at REI, I should add). In the process of setting up the tent over the tarp, I managed to poke a hole in it with the end of one of the poles on the very first use, alas. But it's a simple multi-purpose tarp for a cheap price, so I guess I can't complain too much, and just one hole can be easily patched up with duct tape. It's exactly what you or Admiral Ackbar would expect--a tarp.
Not fancy, but did the job. Kinda like me, I gues
Not much you can say about a $15 tarp. I bought it in Dallas, drove to Wyoming and used it as a ground cloth under my tent for four nights at 7000’ on an archaeology dig. Did what it was supposed to do and didn’t break the bank like some of those high-priced “footprints”. A good deal.
Poor quality, sheds microplastics
I’ve had this tarp for about a year and it’s worked well as a tent footprint and a cover for my bikes outside. Recently, however, it’s begun shedding small blue flakes all over my bikes and the ground. After only a year, I don’t think it’s accurate to call this product “durable”. I shudder to think of all the tiny flakes of blue plastic I may have left in nature when using it for camping. Wish I had paid slightly more for a tarp that was better-made a year ago.
Waterproof!
These tarps are totally waterproof. I have been using these tarps from REI for years and can say that with confidence. They will not leak (unless you get holes in them). These tarps make great rain flys for a cooking area, in front of a tent or for gear storage. I cut one to make a tent ground cover and another as an inside tent floor so doggy toenails wont damage my tent. They can be pulled tight with twine or cord using the grommets. They do not easily tear and the grommets are pretty solid. They are TOTALLY WATERPROOF! 20 minutes ago, after reading a previous review stating these tarps were not waterproof, only water resistant, I went to my camping shelf and grabbed a new 6x8 that I picked up 2 days ago at REI, took it to the sink, filled a section with about 2 gallons of water like a water bag. Its still full. No leaks. I wiped down the outside of the "tarp water bag" with tissue paper, no weep through. Dry as a bone outside.
