Best ultralight bucket for those cutting ounces
I have owned the older model Sea to Summit kitchen sink (bigger, heavier) and it has been a great product. But when I came across this much lighter model, I just had to have it. At 1/3 of the weight and size when packed, this sink is perfect for the weight-conscious backpacker who likes to shave the ounces. I brought this home and immediately gave it a "field test" in my backyard on concrete, rock landscaping, and dry bermuda grass. At no point did I have an issue managing to keep water in the bucket without spilling. Maybe that's due to my experience in dealing with the older model, but this bucket was no more difficult to use. I use the kitchen sink to give myself a camp bath, to do dishes, and to do laundry. It does all 3 with ease. I'm able to keep it 3/4 full and do any of the above chores without major spills. Yes, you need to be more gentle when using it than you would your own kitchen sink at home, but it is so convenient to have a basin of wash water ready to go at all times right at the campsite when getting water is a bit of a hike. This new sink will be going with me on every hiking trip from now on.
Weight savings-to "haul" water
I purchased two of the Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Kitchen Sink to carry water from the lake or stream to my camp. As long as the partial full or full container was set on a reasonably level surface it did not spill. I also found out that if I held both handles in one hand, I could slowly pour the water into the "dirty bag" on my Platypus gravity filter (works like a watering can??). I did not try to do dishes in the "sink". Biggest was the amount of weight I saved when I got rid of the two collapsing water buckets and they take up almost no room in my pack. They were kind of expensive, but I would purchase again!
Spills, spills, spills!
I own other Sea To Summit products (water bucket and cups/bowls), this is why I got this sink without hesitation. Well, it has multiple problems. First, it needs a span of flat surface, a circle slightly more than a foot in diameter. This will likely be your camp table, as ground will not be likely flat enough. Next, it does not hold water. I tried filling it at 1/2, 3/4 and full capacity, without much difference. Water gushes over when you try to put dishes in and out even very carefully. Touch the rim, you got a large spill. Your table will be wet and messy all the time you use this sink, guaranteed!
Super Light Large Sink
Bought this to replace my last sink that was over twice the weight and half the capacity. I used a walking stick through the handles and propped in tree branches so I didn't have to bend over to wash dishes and clothes. Can't speak to it's use on the ground however. Clean up was a breeze. If you are a backpacker then you can't beat the weight and volume size.
Great but needs improvement
I went back an forth on this product after reading the reviews, the one thing I wanted was a basin that was very light weight and yet takes up so little space in your pack. I like to clean up right away after a meal and not let the food dry and g et crusty on your pots and pans. I bought this on a gamble hoping that this would work and if it didn't, REI has a great refund program so I know it was not money down the drain. So the review is; yes very light weight, so I filled this up on my driveway and it held water fine and tried to simulate doing dishes, no issues but when your on the trail circumstances are different and the basin needs to; maybe come with a stand or improve the sidewall design. We dug a small impression on the ground and put the basin in there took all of 60 seconds and it worked awesome. This is also great for washing the grime off your body after hiking in the mud all day. Overall it worked like it's described but there is room for improvement.
Best ultralight sink available!!
I have to start by saying that we are outfitters and we use tons of different products always testing to find the best for each situation. To the people who say this sink is too flimsy or needs supports you need to understand that those models already exist. The Ultra-Sil is not designed to be a car camping sink. This is designed to be the absolute lightest most pack-able way to have a camp sink. Like all true ultralight backpacking gear you have to make concessions to something to allow the ultra pack-able size and light-weight. If they added supports or strong walls it would be 3 times the weight and size, also sea to summit already makes the stronger walled heavy duty version of this for car campers but that is not what this is for! This is an awesome product to allow you to do dishes and wash up without adding another large item to the ever-growing list of items people take hiking. If your listening Sea To Summit, please don't change this product its great just like the other products of your's that we own and recommend to our customers.
Perfect for its intended use
great lightweight product. Good for dishes or clothes
good product, but sides are flimsy
used in jantho sumatra for clothes washing and bathing basin. Was incredibly light weight, but would be a little better if sides didn't collapse so easily where water flowed over the top. Perhaps if the sides were a little stiffer, otherwise it was a great product.
I would never buy this product again!!!
Worst product I have ever bought form REI. I'm surprised they even carry this! Sea to Summit usually makes good stuff, but not this time. Couldn't get it to stand up with water in it, it did not clean well, and I could not get it back in its case. Sorry to say, Sea to Summit dropped the ball on this one. If it weren't for REI's great return policy I would have been really upset.
Well Made, Durable, Extremely Light Weight
Bought this in 2017. It has been very handy to have when backpacking. It is durable, extremely light, and it compacts down quickly and tightly. It is useful for washing dishes/utensils, clothing, some gear, and even arms, feet, hair, etc. After seven years of frequent use, it is almost like new.
