Best boots ever!

I purchased these boots to walk the Camino de Santiago, roughly 500 miles over the Pyrenees mountains and across Spain. They were comfortable out of the box and while I took them on several 12 mile training hikes, break-in time did not seem necessary. The ankle cushioning offered comfort and great support, no turned ankles and no little rocks made it into my boots - and there were lots of rocks. Toe box is roomy allowing my toes space to breathe even after 8 hours of hiking. No blisters or foot/ankle chafing on my trek. The terrain and weather conditions varied greatly. I hiked through snow, rain, thick mud, very rocky terrain and on asphalt. The boots were amazing in every terrain condition and on every surface. They kept my feet warm in the cold and my feet could breathe on long hot stretches. In the heavy rain and thick mud my feet were completely protected. While the leather boots got damp at the seams on two extremely wet days, water never seeped into the boot and my feet were always dry. The boot exterior dried quickly overnight. The soles are sturdy and really saved my feet from the rocks, oh the rocks. The trail has some very steep descents, the traction on these boots is fantastic. The lacing system on these boots is great too, they stay taught and never come undone. For a long distance trip like this these boots are well worth the investment. If I had it to do over I would buy them again. I saw many people suffer with shoes that did not offer up this kind of comfort, protection and support. For all that I asked of my feet on this trek they deserved these boots.

Not waterproof/poor customer service from Lowa

I bought this boot 3 years ago. Loved it as it was super comfortable and needed no break in time. After about a year I started to question whether the Gortex was failing. After a complete failure, feet soaked, I sent it back to Lowa. As the previous reviewer stated, I had to pay to send it back. They claimed there was nothing wrong with the boot and sent it back. Once again I cleaned and waterproofed it with the Lowa products as suggested and they failed again, I repeated the process. Again failure. I contacted Lowa and got no response. I again cleaned and treated with another product. Soaked again. Thank goodness for REI. I told them my story and after looking at the boots and saying they did not look abused or overly worn they took them back and gave me a store credit. These were expensive boots and after a little over a year they started to fail. I did everything I could to make it right but every time I wore them in the rain my feet were soaked. Will continue to buy at REI but no more Lowa.

Low(a) quality for price

I bought these for a 30 day mountaineering trip in the winds but was disappointed with the quality. The soles were peeling by the end and chunks of the rubber in front were chipped off. I definitely put these boots through a lot, but these boots seemed to have gotten more beat up than my peers' boots (Vasquez, for example). Despite being disappointed with the quality, I felt these boots were super comfortable! I'm prone to blisters and didn't get one during my entire trip! For light, dry hiking, I bet these are perfect. Pros: Super comfortable Pretty color Cons: Soles poor quality Gets pretty wet despite Gore-Tex

Awesome. Just awesome.

I'm a cultural resources contractor, so I do roughly 6-8 miles of survey over all kinds of terrain everyday. It's important to have a good boot when hiking that much, and these are the best I've had. They're super durable but don't require a break-in period. They can get a little hot in the summer months, but that's nothing a good sock can't mitigate. Love love love these boots.

Amazing fit, quality, and performance

When I opened the box, these looked like works of art. Upon close inspection, the extreme quality of materials and workmanship are evident. I have been hiking and backpacking for over 30 years and have not seen or experienced a boot of such high quality and performance. Fit, of course, is personal. My partner and I have VERY different feet and these fit us both like a glove with no modification. No other shoe or boot has ever worked for us both without modification. The toe box is slightly larger than most other boots, and this has proven to be both comfortable and performs well. My partner usually has to order women's wide, but this was not required with the Mauria. I do not typically wear wide shoes or boots, and these work perfectly for me, too. Out of the box, the boot flexes easily and also provides comfortable, firm, and stable ankle support. One could wear these out of the box on a rigorous day hike with no problem, in my opinion, though I am breaking mine in. These boots deserve respect. Out on the trail (or off the trail), the traction and lateral performance is ideal. This is the best boot I have ever worn. They are like wearing a slice of heaven. They are expensive, and we compared them to EVERY boot in this price range. We took our time with them all. No other boot came close. If you are shopping in this price range, these boots should be on the "must try them" list. If you are not shopping in this price range, these boots should be on the "must try them" list.

Sturdy and super comfortable!

I agree with every word in the previous two reviews, from the esthetics to the durability, waterproofness, and comfort! They are not lightweight, but neither are they super heavy, given that there is a LOT of boot here. Warm, comfortable, great stability, supported crampons very well. I've had trouble with spraining both ankles in the past, but these always felt great without feeling like armor. I even got in some serious switchback "scree skiing," coming down from a steep, loose peak, and never wavered in ankle support, or got any rocks in! - I was wearing gators that day, but never got rock or wet in any other day, either! Their tread traction on ice (without crampons) and muddy hillsides is awesome. I bought these for two upcoming trekking adventures and just returned from the first one, up on Alaskan glaciers and tundra. My feet never felt a drop of wet, and I feel they have proved themselves admirably in all areas, for my committing to them in Nepal soon. As I was "breaking them in" (though they really do hardly need any) while backpacking here in much warmer, drier CA this spring and summer, they didn't over-heat my feet as I feared they might. I did make the mistake one day of not tying them as tightly as I should have, to prevent toe crush on downhill climbs, especially while carrying a full pack, but kicking the heel back and tying them tightly and correctly did the trick. And the lacing hardware make it easy - they are like jewels! I still risk pinch blisters under both pinky toes over long hauls, but even those have finally been completely solved after years of trying, by rapping them in special multi-day Band-Aid toes bandages. Not sure any boot or shoe out there can prevent those on me all by themselves, at this point. May these boots take you as far and as happily as they have taken me!

Very adjustable,

This is more of a technical review. I bought these last year before a trip to Kilimanjaro, and hiked every weekend for 8 weeks prior to the trek. I did have some problems with the big toe getting numb, and realized it was due to these boots being so adjustable, and can really torque the downward pressure from the "button" on the tongue of the boot. Experimenting showed that if the laces are just below the "button" it will push downward, and if you go up one more grommet, it will pull upwards slightly. If you do not use the tongue "button" there will be no upward or downward pressure. Very adjustable and very sensitive to pressure, easy to get it too tight. After I experimented with the lacing, everything worked excellently, with no more numbness, no bad hot spots either, and not one blister last summer. They are a mid-heavy boot, and I really liked the higher back, that prevents dirt from getting in to the boot, and extra cushion on the heel. My foot has a average toe width, narrower heel, average arch.

Not waterproof

I had these boots for a year and a month and I sent them back to lower because the gortex was failing. Lowa said they put them through tests and they pass which is incredulous to me because my feet were wet. Lowa customer service is beyond awful and the freight to send them back to lowa in Connecticut was $25. Lowa is not a company that I will deal with in the future. For $300 it is beyond my understanding why they can advertise these as waterproof

Terrible Pain!

Back in 2017 I purchased these for the Annapurna Circuit Trek since they were recommended. I spent several months breaking them in and thought they were good to go only to end up in Manang with terrible foot pain, even after adjusting laces several times prior. I ended up putting them into my pack and buying a different pair of shoes to finish the trek in. Beyond the foot pain I'll say these boots were great until my feet hurt beyond reason, I experienced no blisters and even found them to have great ankle support. They were very heavy though, and even worse when wet--which took a long time to dry. Maybe it was just my feet, or maybe it was the shoes, but I was sad to return these since initially they seemed to work really well on smaller treks.

My toes are still numb

After a very long and well researched quest for new boots I decided on these. They are some of the heaviest duty women's specific boots I have found, I was looking for something with very few seams and a high quality footbed. A few short hikes and they were feeling very comfortable, I took them on a 10 day hike down the PCT and by day five the edges of both big toes were going numb. I adjusted the insoles to give myself some more room, even though it didn't really feel like anything was rubbing, to no avail. Finished out with painful feet and it took months for the feeling to return to my poor toes! It looks like I'm not the only one with this problem, it's something to do with the shape of the toe box. If they truly fit your feet and you're looking for a tough boot then these are for you, but be careful with the fit!!
