Not as great as claimed, but still good.

I recently purchased this roller in the hopes of increasing deep-tissue massage/myofascial release following an injury. Pros, this roller is very well constructed with pvc reinforcement to maintain shape and will likely outlast most other types of rollers out there. With that being said the longevity of the roller may justify the cost in the long run. With the added stiffness it was definitely more intense and more effective than what I was using prior. Cons, the price was a bit steep for something that I honestly could have built myself with some pvc pipe an old yoga mat and some hockey tape for a fraction of the cost. And the idea of the different pattern zones is really nothing more than a gimmick. I honestly had a great deal of difficulty discerning one zone from another without looking and didn't really experience any appreciable difference performance or effectiveness from one zone to the next. If you're trying to really get deep the grid pattern just isn't going to penetrate deeply enough. Another issue I have is that there is very little information included with the product as far as how to use it, and for someone who is new to using rollers or is only accustomed to using softer full foam rollers there is a real possibility that you could injure yourself. For a bit more money I guess you can purchase some instructional videos from the manufacturer but they really could have included the cliff-notes version in print with the product. All in all it's light weight, solid construction, will likely last quite awhile, should be effective for most of your needs, but as for me personally I needed something that could knead deeply into muscle more effectively so I ended up returning it and going with another product that unfortunately was not available through REI. This gadget comes with the most rudimentary information on how to use it. The buyer has to buy a series of CDs (really, what happened to immediate download on the internet?) that almost doubles the cost of this roller. You can look on Youtube for a few videos. The manufacturer's website doesn't have much useful information - you have to buy the CDs. Included with the roller are advertisements for other gadgets made by the manufacturer. Really, selling a product without instructions, then selling the instructions separately. Poor business model. There are other less expensive options to consider.

Love it

I'm not trying to sound overly dramatic but I think this foam roller changed my life. I have have chronic lower back pain. I'm pretty active -- I do kickboxing 4-5 days a week, and I'm a cyclist. My back problems have flared up a few times since I started kickboxing a couple years ago, and the last time it happened, I bought this foam roller. I used it every day for two weeks while I took a break from the gym, and now I use it after the gym most days and I feel great. I'd never used a foam roller before and it was kind of an intense one to start with, but I think it's helped me a lot. I like how dense it is and sometimes it still hurts, but it really feels like it's hitting those muscles that need to be worked out. I love this thing.

Core Workout and Massage in One

I took a class in using foam rollers and received many useful ways to release muscle tension. It may be painful at first, but if you keep using it, it becomes an addiction- it feels so good and works deep into the muscle tissue better than most massages, yet is easy to do yourself. It is both a good core body workout and a massage in one. It is my favorite thing.

Great for Fibro/RA/Chronic Pain Sufferers

I wish more people knew that a man with Fibromyalgia developed this product. It can be intimidating as it comes off as an exercise product, but fortunately the REI associate helped me pick out the right one. I suffer from RA and the chronic pain that comes with it. After a frustrating three days of all of my tried and true methods of trying to get rid of knots in my back, increase my circulation, and hence reduce swelling, I did some online research on "how to get knots out of your back" and it led me to REI that evening and this product. Chronic pain sufferers, this is the BEST. Obviously I am not a doctor, but I find when my circulation is going, my pain is minimal, and this thing did the trick right away. Was shocked to see that the man who developed it was a sufferer of Fibro, but very happy to see that as well. Wish more patients would know about this potential relief.

Solid Construction Brings Deep Pressure

I was debating whether to purchase this or the extreme but went with this one since the extreme was not offered in this length. I was concerned that it might not be stiff enough for me. Thankfully, I was dead wrong. After using this for two weeks, I can still only side roll up each leg consecutively five times before I need to switch legs. It works great on my upper back and under my shoulder blades too. I am very happy with this roller.

The Goldilocks of foam rollers

I don't think anyone particularly likes foam rolling, but it is helpful at releasing tight muscles. This roller is, for me, the right level of firmness. It's firm enough to get in and find the tight spots in muscles, but has just a tiny bit of give so you can adjust the intensity of pressure by the angle and weight you put on it. Good for legs and back.

Amazing

I have had chronic tension for 35 yrs+. This roller, used in conjunction with some education of anatomy, allows me to work those areas in ways no other therapy could. The key is to have a good idea of what you are rolling around for.

full body treatment

I have a shorter version (made by gaiam) that I love, but it only works on one limb or half my torso - I wanted something that would do my entire upper back - this is it! durable and effective, plus a great price on sale and with a coupon! (i've been waiting for a good price......)

works well for stretching leg muscles

use it daily for stretching muscles and loosening muscles. It is firm and rigid, not likely to break down. The larger size is more versatile to roll and stretch the back.
