So disappointed in this product that I was compelled to write my first review ever. Been wearing and lovin' SmartWool since the company first started up. They used to use a soft merino wool that pampered you like a baby's blanket and warmed you instantly. Now they're using a very finely spun wool that is actually sleek vs soft and keeps the shirt very COOL against the body vs warm. I wore mine for several hours and never did warm up... felt that edgy cold discomfort all day long. Defeats the purpose of long underwear! Have found the Cresta line at llbean to be a good alternative for soft, warm, merino wool products.
Wow! I just received the 3 Smartwool 250 Base Layer tops I ordered because of the great sale going on now at REI. The base layer crew top is exactly what I've been searching for. Warm, soft, a bit stretchy, extremely comfortable, not itchy, washable, and plenty long which I love because I'm long-waisted and hate tops that ride up when your stretching. What's not to love? I had my eye on this top in the store and hoped it would go on sale before the holiday so I could treat myself to something beautiful, comfortable and practical. I hate being cold and this top will keep me warm and snug on the cold days to come! Thanks Smartwool and REI!
I, too, was so disappointed when I quickly discovered on trying these on (Xmas present), that material does not have nearly the warmth, comfort, or feel of previous versions (which I loved!) The tag says 100% wool, but clearly a different formulation. Regretfully returning, hoping that SmartWool will bring back the quality next year. Added a star for the pretty color.
I wore this in the cool temperatures in the AM while hiking Big Bend and kept it on for a 14 mile hike. It got warmer during the day but it stayed cool during that part! I have this in green and pink!
This is one of the best purchases I have ever made. It was pricey. Would have loved to have gotten it for about 25% less, but I love it. It fits well, keeps you warm and looks good doing it. I got the shirt in purple, which is my favorite color and have worn it a ton. It is great for layering, but also just on it's own. Performance gear at it's best. I want to get one for my husband but I'd like to find it on sale!
Very pleased with this item, it works well as a casual top as well as a baselayer. It breathes well and does not absorb odors. I've worn it under my scrubs at work and accidentally got the sleeves wet, they dried within an hour. Smartwool is not cheap, but it is durable, soft enough to wear next to my sensitive skin, and well worth the money. I paid full price and don't regret it. Can't recommend it enough!
Bought this just before my Alaska trip and wore it several days in the row as we were camping and working on a secluded island. With no shower... And yet, like my original smartwool shirt, it kept me both warm and helped keep my feeling less stinky than other shirts.
I live in Southern California and am fairly outdoorsy. So far I’m worn it in the snow (temp was about 43 degrees on the high) under a couple light layers. I was perfectly warm and had a blast. I’m the kind of person that is constantly cold and I finally found a decent base layer that keeps me warm. I work in a grocery store and am regularly in and out of freezers and refrigerators. I don’t hold in too much heat if I’m running around collecting carts or power lifting boxes of apples, but feel comfortable in the milk box. I recommend this to anyone who needs that little extra bit of warmth. Soft, comfortable, fits decent, and cozy. I’m 5’9”, about 150 lbs, and got a size small because I wanted it to fit more snug than loose. The only thing I would change is I would make the sleeves and waist length just slightly longer as I have a +2 wingspan and have a long torso, but that is just my body and how I like stuff to fit. An average arm and torso proportioned person will think it’s perfect, I’m sure.
They run on the tighter side, but look and feel terrific. A gift that never fails to please.
I love to travel using various layers. Never know when the weather will change. This is a great baselayer, just throw a pullover on followed by a jacket according to the weather report and I'm good to go! Plus, I can wear it for a few days and it'll still pass the "smell test" that I conduct before leaving the hotel room in the morning. Key is to lay it out at night to let it air out or dry out if necessary. I was torn between the small and the medium sizes as I fall right in between. I'm 5'3" and 135lbs with a DD bra cup size. I went with the small as I planned to use it as a baselayer. It was a tiny bit snug at first, but after a few hours, it stretched out a bit (all over) and I was glad that I did go with the small. If I wanted to wear any layers under it, however, I'd need to go with the medium. Otherwise, it's well-made and I hope will last me a long time.
