Used a Katadyn Hiker Pro for the last five years, including on several trips where the only available water was seriously contaminated. In the worst spots, I added MicroPur to the water after pumping, but in 9 out of 10 cases, just pumping is perfectly fine and sufficient to get safe and tasty water even out of silty soups like the Colorado river in full flood. The filter comes with a Nalgene style adapter, which didn't fit well when I converted to Platypus bottles. A spare Platty cap and a bit of carving with my multi tool later though, my Kadatyn filter now has a Platypus adapter that allows for pumping without too much mess.
Great Water Filter
This filter is great because it is compact and lightweight. It is easy to use. Just connect the tubes and you are ready to filter. I did buy my own tubing to customize the lengths of the tubes. Both input and output tubes are about 3 ft., but I just wanted it a little longer. I did this partly because the tubing that came with mine didn't allow me to disconnect it from the output port of the filter. It was stuck on so I cut it off and used my own tubing. Works like a charm now. I love that I can connect it directly to my quick-link camelbak pack. It also comes with a water bottle connector so all bases are covered. Great product.
Great Water Filter
I have used this filter 30+ times and have never had any issues. This filter pumps out a liter of water very quickly from any source. I have never gotten sick from any of the water I have filtered. Having said that, I have only filtered water in the Sierra's streams, rivers, and lakes, as well as a few locations in Southern California. But still, no gastrointestinal issues have hit me. This filter performs very well and is very reliable. The weak point on the filter appears to be the pump handle. If one were to apply some excessive force while pumping, I could see the handle breaking. However, with normal use this has never happened with mine.
Good solid filter
I have used Katadyn filter for years and have yet to get sick. This filter works as described. It is easy to take apart and assemble and I like the fact that to perform maintenance in the field is a snap and the chance of loosing any parts are small. I had the MSR Hyperflow but decided to return it. To much maintenance required for saving about 5 ounces. This unit, not the case. The weight difference is partly due to the MSR Hyperflow not having an outlet house. Overall, I like this unit. One very nice feature is that you can fill your water bladder when still in the pack. Had to do this on a 10 mile hike up in Desolation, and it was easy as 1 2 3.
Very happy, QUICK & very easy setup
I was very happy with my purchase of the Katadyn water filter. It is lightweight and filters water quickly. I read the directions and put it together and filtered water through it for about 20 minutes to get rid of the first filter remnants. After that, took it straight to the hills and used it all weekend. Very easy to use and hooked up to my MSR 4L waterpack great. Definitely need both hands if using in a tricky location. Was on slippery rocks and had to make sure I was set before pumping. Really pumps quite a bit of water through with every pump and I was thrilled about that. Overall very thrilled with it.
Worked perfectly
This is my first filter, and it worked great for a 7-day backpacking trip. The two-tube system can be a little awkward when trying to hold your water container at the same time, but I got the hang of it quickly. It was very easy to maneuver with two people. I was drinking water from pretty clean sources and didn't have any issues with the pump or the filter. I actually thought the water tasted like bottled water, which really surprised me. The filter was lightweight and came in a nice, small zipper pouch. The price was right, and I hope to use this filter for many more trips.
This is great!!
I just tested this our for the first time on a trip through the Zion Narrows. I expected the water in the canyon to be clearer but it was all pretty murky, so I was a little skeptical. This filter cleared the water up perfectly. I was impressed by how clear it came out considering what it looked like going in (think chocolate milk). But I was still hesitant to taste it. I finally found the guts to take a sip and it was totally fine. It almost tasted as good as my Reverse Osmosis filtered water at home. It worked really well, and since I never did get sick I'm guessing it filtered all of the microbes and bacteria really well also.
Katadyn water filters are â„– 1.
After reviewing other reviews I decided to wait a few weeks to write mine. When properly cared for, this filter is great. I like the connectivity options. I chose filter to CamelBak with an additional quick release to stow away clean end. I always dry filter out between trips.
Works great for me !!
I had the original Pur filter and upgraded to the Pro. I have these both for years and have had no problems with either one. The only real maintenance I have done is changing the filter which you have to do anyway. What I really like is that I can fill my Camelback Unbottle Bladder without having to stop and take apart my pack, all I have to do is hook up the hose adapter and pump away. The 2 hoses can be a pain at times but considering everything else this is a relatively very minor thing. I recommended this filter to a friend and he also bought one and loves it. For convenience and ease of use, it works for me.
Solid Build, Easy to Use
I brought the Hiker Pro on a weekend trip to the Olallie Lake Wilderness. I have used this model previous to my purchase, so I had an idea of what I was getting into. I'm so glad I made the decision that I did. The adaptor system is built to accomodate Nalegenes (this is what I used) and hydration packs, but it also worked just fine to fill other containers. My friends brought their Kleen Kanteens, and it wasn't much more difficult to fill them up. The downside, if there is one, is that the system works best when two people are opperating it. One person operates the pump while the other holds the containers being filled. One could certainly do this by his or herself (I did this once), but it certainly is more awkward and increases the risk of dropping either your container or the output tube in contaminated water. Features could be designed to make this process simpler, but it would come at the cost of adaptability, which was important to me. As far as operation goes, the pump strokes were smooth and quick. I counted about 50 strokes per liter, at a little more than a minute to fill. The mechanism seemed to operated with little wear on the unit, which I anticipate will mean a longer product life. We pumped about 20 liters through the filter and I noticed no change in terms of difficulty of pumping (which should be expected in any good filter). When I got home and cleaned the filter, there was no noticeable buildup either in the filter or prefilter, so I think the water we were filtering was pretty clean to begin with. Also, the cleaning process was quick and simple. Overall, a great product. Exactly what I hoped for and expected.
