Suunto Core
This watch was very easy to set up after taking it out of the box. And since I had a Suunto prior, I was able to set up without using the instructions. My problem with it (I've had it only about 2 weeks) is that the designers gave it a HUGE screen but don't use it. The read outs, other than the prime read out, is miniscule - tiny! When I'm in the woods, running, hiking, biking - I want to be able to just glance at the watch but with the small size text I have to stop and study the screen. There is so much room on that screen that could be used but isn't. I'm looking to buy the Casio Protrek as this one just isn't cutting it for me. If the text was bigger - only just a little - it would be a perfect watch.
ABC?
This watch feels comfortable on the wrist. It is also stylish, with simple clean design. The altimeter/barometer function is reasonably accurate, as long as you reset it every few hours. The compass feature is not accurate. It only gave a ballpark correct reading about 10% of the time, seemingly at random, making it completely useless. I have read the reviews that make excuses for the inaccuracies, but if I spend that much on a watch, I expect it to work. I returned it to REI, where the return policy is excellent.
Great Multi-function EDC watch
Being a software engineer, triathlete and outdoors enthusiast I needed a watch that could go from casual office to outside play easily. This watch works great in this area. Once you understand how the barometric altiude and barometer works you can easily make it accurate to your local area. It has all the features you would want like countdown timer, alarms, stopwatch plus the compass which functions quite well. The only thing I would have loved to see on this watch would have been a higher water-proof rating. The Casio Pathfinder is water resistant to 200M which is nice because you don't have to take it off when diving which I do as well. All in all though the ergonomics and fit of the Suunto far outweigh any of the small issues.
Delivers as promised!
Great product as expected from Suunto (at least based upon my research, as this is my first ABC watch). While I have only had some limited use with it so far, the accuracy actually surprised me based on some other Suunto Core reviews. Yes, you must calibrate it with known altitude or sea level pressure, but as I understand this is the case with any ABC watch. Very comfortable for a watch it's size, and I felt that it has just enough features to make it a must have on any hike, but not so much so that it becomes impossible to use these features. I guess my one gripe would be that there is no way to transfer the info recorded in the watches logs to a computer. Not a big deal though as it stores 7-days of info, so if I really wanted I could create a spreadsheet or something myself.
Perfect
I recieved this watch as a gift from my wife, and I have yet to find anything that I do not absolutely love about it. It is VERY comfortable, which is important to me. Physically, it is a perfect size and the face is very easy to read and the buttons work with precision. The instruments work flawlessly and extremely accurately, almost surprisingly so. The only instrument that does not work with 100% accuracy at all times is the thermometer, which is obviously disrupted by body heat while wearing it. Take the watch off and within minutes it gives a 100% accurate reading. No complaints whatsoever about this watch. Also just to add, my wife told me that the sales associates at REI were extremely helpful and knowledgeable on each of the watches she was comparing. They helped her make what I consider to be the perfect decision for me.
Very good value for your money
If you know what is the limitation of barometric watch, you will not expect absolutely precise measures, this is a very good choice. The hygrometer is very good tool, and as I realized give a good sign when the weather goes wrong. Temperature function is working only well if your watch is on the table. The dual time zone is cool, plus I like very much the sunset mode. Overall the case is robust enough but not too heavy, very comfortable to wear.
Not worth the price!
I have had this watch for a few years and it breaks continuously! The electronics seem to reset unexpectedly so I it looses track of the time and any other information stored in it. This watch is very expensive to begin with but I justified it by thinking that I was making an investment in a quality watch, but that is not the case.
Easy to read
I would start by saying I have the one-previous model of this watch. It appears mostly the same, though, with the added benefits on this one of automatically adjusting altimeter to barometer, and not needing to put in a reference elevation. I think mine is a little more stylish, with colored notches at the cardinal points. It is so comfortable I do not even notice I have it on. I got this watch mainly because of the large display. I can see the time, elevation, etc. at a glance. When driving around the Big Island of Hawaii, it was great to watch the elevation change. Plus it will switch to depth when I go underwater. And I really appreciated the digital compass when orienting maps. Like any watch with a thermometer, however, the temperature reading is only accurate if you are not wearing it. I must give kudos to REI. The first watch I got fogged up the minute I got into water (at a hotel pool). I took it into REI, and they gave me a new one, no hassles. I did not even need my receipt. Great service.
Awesome Watch!
I've had it for about a week, and am very happy with it. I have used it diving and swimming, and its nice to know the temperature and depth of the water. I fly airplanes often and am impressed with how accurate the altimeter is - we will be at sea level, then climb to 5000' and the watch will indicate 5150', really impressive for a watch. An important note - it is important to understand the altimeter/barometer relationship in this watch. I had a hard time understanding it at first: The watch's pressure sensor can act as an altimeter, or a barometer, but not both at the same time. You can switch between the modes manually, or automatically. I have had good luck with auto mode, where it switches between Barometer and Altimeter modes depending on how rapidly the pressure is changing. I also like the sunset/sunrise times, and logbook/memory functions so you can view your dives or hikes afterwards. The watch is sweet looking and really easy to read. I like being able to swap the different displays of info. IE you can choose what is displayed; I like having the main time displayed on top, and date on the bottom, or sometimes nothing on the bottom to keep it simple.
