I bought this about 4 years ago for weekend day hikes averaging 3 hours. It works great and is still in good shape with no leaks. You have to leave it puffed open in order to get all the water to dry out so if it is still wet, you don't want to flatten it. Mine is starting to look worn so I think I better replace it before it punctures. You can see on the top of the photo where it looks creased and worn. Not bad for four years.

Nice but NOT compatible with Sawyer Squeeze filter
johni
This is a light, sturdy bag that is great for carrying water. Unfortunately, it is not the correct thread for the Sawyer Squeeze filter (hence only 3 stars). The Sawyer filter thread (both input and output) are 4/32" thread pitch. The Platypus is 5/32" thread pitch. If you use it on the input (dirty) side, it will screw in, but dirty water will leak around the threads, down the outside of the filter, and into your clean water output. This is true no matter how tight or loose you screw it in. The REI service answer below stating it is compatible is incorrect.

Solid accessory!

I bought this for stashing extra water on a 5-day AT hike. Pros: no plastic taste, rolls up to small size when empty, survived in my fully-packed backpack and being tossed around camp without any issues at all. Cons: Kind of hard to wash/dry because of small opening, also kind of hard to fill in shallow or slow-moving water. Honestly these are great to have on hand because they allow you to carry a bunch of water when you need it, but they take up only a small amount of space when empty. I've been meaning to get a few in a smaller size as well for my dog to carry in his pack!

So good I bought it again

Solid purchase the first time, which is why I bought it again after finding the outer edges of the platypus temperature limits. I’ve have steaming hot (NOT boiling, but tap-hot) water in this and it was fine. I’ve left it outside in a late fall camping trip and in the vehicle during winter day trips. What it couldn’t handle was being in a tiny fridge that frosted up over the weekend and semi-froze it. It now has a minor leak, thus the new one. Pros: lightweight, packable, pretty durable and temperature tolerant, good price point Cons: doesn’t handle freezing, a little bigger than reasonable for day trips.

A very pleasant surprise

I recieved this as a Christmas gift a few years ago from my sister and until I used it I didn't think much of it. Since then I have been convinced that it is one of the best bottles/hydration systems you can buy. My first time out with it I just used it as a back up water source on a car trip. Then I started taking it when backpacking for extra water storage with little weight. A while ago I got the hydration hose and when my camelbak bladder was stolen, my platypus became my primary system. My favorite thing is that with multiple bottles you can just switch the hose from one bottle to the other, pack the first down small and get back on the trail. The only downside is the small opening size, but if you are only going to use clean water and dry it out between uses you shouldn't have a problem. I have used it backpacking, day hiking, and snowboarding for four years and haven't had one issue.

Screw threading isn't standard; doesn't fit Sawyer

I use a Sawyer and thought this was going to be a great alternative to those little squeezy bags you get with the filter, but the thread sizing is non-standard and it's very tough to get a tight seal on my filter and I noticed dirty water leaking down into my clean as I was filtering. And then my cats stole the cap so it's now a useless hunk of plastic. Additional cons: takes days to dry out inside, no slide opening or hanging strap on back. Going to try out the CNOC 2L next and see if that works better for my setup.

great for long hikes

I got this to carry extra water on long hikes in areas where there's no water available. Works great. So much better than a hard water bottle, since it just flattens out into nothing when it's empty and lightens my load. I originally bought two of these, but one was ripped open by a raven when I left it out in my camp, so... keep it away from large birds with sharp beaks.

Good basic collapsable bottle

I bought this at an outdoor store while looking for products to take on short backpacking trip. I was hesistant to spend a lot on a hydration system as I was used to just carrying extra water bottles, so I ended up with the basic 2L Platy Bottle. So far (2 trips) I'm impressed with the bottle's ability to hold up inside my backpack. The only negative I've seen so far is getting it completely dry - I had to use a hairdryer for about 5 mins (on no heat) as it wasn't drying in my sink's drain rack. I think if I could do it over again I would have paid the extra $ for the pack that opens up (big zip?) so that it would be easier to dry/clearn.

Sawyer Squeeze SOLUTION!

Trying to fit your Sawyer Squeeze onto this Platypus bottle? The solution is easier than you think! Replace the white sealing washer with a thinner one. Ideally about 1mm thick, or between 1/16" and 3/64". May be hard to find, but a few minutes with an Exacto knife and some faucet packing material from the local orange hardware store will have you in business. Just trace the original gasket onto the rubber sheet, cut, and no more leaks! (Warning: the washers used for your garden hose are still too thick......yes, I tried). I can verify no leaks even with the Sawyer flip-cap closed (it wasn't intentional). Cost me nothing (I had the material already), and took me about five minutes of perfectionist cutting.

The very best bottle around for the price point!

I've bought many bottles in the past, but these are simply the best around. You'll wear out, before one of these does. I use them for storage of water, collection of water, filtration and even personal hygiene. They fold into next to nothing, when not in use, and stand nicely when full. I always carry at least two of them with me when on an outing of any sort. This is a durable product, supported by REI long term, and offered to the members at a reasonable price point. You can't go wrong with these.
