Brooks England Flyer

My Brooks was comfortable from the very first ride, and has gotten just a touch more comfortable after only 100 miles or so of riding. I've used the Brooks saddle treatment but can't really say if that does anything except make it look even better. This saddle makes my old Trek 7300 actually look sharp. I'm not too fond of it not being waterproof but I'm sure it would take some moderate rain without a problem with the treatment applied. It is however, more slippery than my last saddle. It did squeak a bit at first - I thought the birds were chirping. I put a drop of oil on the springs and it's quiet now. Overall I'm very happy with this saddle.

Slippery and not real comfortable for me.

I originally ordered the regular B-17. Before that arrived, I read reviews that said the Flyer was like a Cadillac ride as compared to the regular B – 17 being like a luxury European car. I thought, I gotta try the Cadillac! While I am glad to have tried it, it was not for me. I did find that I tended to slide on it and that made it uncomfortable. For me, the regular B-17, as hard as it is, was pretty comfortable from the get-go. It is by no means broken in yet (I've only put about 50 miles on it so far) but it was a little more comfortable from the get-go than the old seat it replaced and is getting more comfortable every time I ride.

Be good to your backside!

Few people find the saddles that come with their shiny new (or old) bikes comfy on long rides. How well can a convex surface at the contact points of a saddle accommodate our sit bones? Even with padding and a gel filling, I can't get comfortable for long with most saddles. Leather is different. It will eventually stretch in the places where your bones press it. The rare cyclist will fit this saddle out of the box. The rest of us can break in this saddle the hard way, riding 500-1000 miles OR do it the easy way. The easy way is to soak the saddle in hand-hot water for 5-7 minutes, dry it off, oil the leather and ride for 15-20 minutes--for some, more than one treatment will be needed. I had my doubts about this method, worrying that it might "damage" the saddle and resisted for months after buying it. Hundreds of miles later, I'd made little progress in comfort, so I did the soak and oil procedure--right after the 20 minute ride, I looked at the saddle and saw that my butt had made two depressions in the saddle. Since then, I have loved the saddle. I feel as if the saddle and I have become one, unlike any other saddle I have had including WTB, Fizik, Terry, Selle Italia and Selle Royale. Downsides: 1. Normal seat bags for tools, tubes, etc will hang much lower than on other saddles. 2. Weight, but the stiff springs absorb shock, so I use this on my mountain bike--I use the Brooks B-17 (300 gm less) on my road bike.
