Best addition to AT Thru Hike

This was undoubtedly the best addition to my recent Appalachian Trail thru hike. I actually spliced this into the hose for a Platypus Big Zip 3L resevoir, so that it was filtering as I drank from the resevoir. This was a recommendation from the REI team in Asheville, as it reduced the need of carrying two resevoirs (one for dirty water and the other for the clean water after it was filtered using the gravity work system). Any thru hikers that started with a pump system quickly switched it out a system like this or to water tablets. Mine took a real beating in my backpack for five months and never once had a malfunction, and I never once got sick from any questionable water sources (which there were many!) This is the only system I would use for future long distance hikes.

Replacement had issues

I used the original filter for a group of 4 for 500 miles on the Colorado Trail last year - it worked great most of the time and after a couple hundred gallons the original slowed down to 20minutes/gallon (not great, but manageable). One thing that is critical is clearing the air out of the filter by backflushing each time you use it to get optimal speed. Even with regular backflushing, the performance of the filter slows over time and it is frustrating that there is no other way to clean it since it is completely sealed. However, since this filter requires minimal active work, you can filter as you rest/snack. I gave several REI presentations after this trip and recommended the product (with original filter design). My wife did the Colorado Trail this year (2012), and since I didn't want any problems for her, bought this replacement filter for her trip with my son. However, after about 20-30 gallons the filter slowed way down to 40-60 minutes per gallon and was impractical to use. Kids and I joined them for the last 125 miles (total of 7 people supported by this single filter) and had to do all our filtering the night before (3+hours of filtering) and carry all water for the day (sometimes 20lbs of water) because there wasn't enough time to do it throughout the day as we crossed water streams - very frustrating. We backflushed several times and worked hard to remove air to optimize performance, but still couldn't get more than 1 gallon every 40+ minutes through it. I'm getting another replacement filter, and hoping this one performs better.

Best Way

There's not been a single person I've camped with that doesn't fall in love with how this thing provides water. It's my favorite piece of gear, really. Water is essential and the gravity system is effortless hydration. Such a simple concept that hasn't been fully embraced yet... My first filter lasted hundreds of runs of mountain-stream water, and only started to slow when I was forced to fill from some pollen-covered murky lakes. New filter is back to going through a liter every 25 seconds or so. For how much the (smaller) gravity kits cost, though, it makes sense to spend the extra few bucks to get some spare bags and hose instead of just the filter cartridge. The filters are justifiably overpriced - they last a LOT longer than you'd expect.

Can use with cheaper, higher-gallon Sawyer filters

This filter did the trick on two trips. On a third, filter blow-back test revealed filter failure. Not sure how this happened, as the filter never froze. Perhaps it was dropped (which would make this a bit fragile for the backcountry). Still, I'm reasonably happy with overall filter system purchase, because outside of the filter itself, the set up is good. Thoughtfully designed, nice parts. The Sawyer filter is now working for as a substitute. It's both cheaper and rated for 100,000 gallons, versus a few thousand LITERS on this filter!

Clog quickly cost more and high failure rate

I went through 3 of these before I realized you can run a sawyer filter in a gravity tubing set up. These clog very quickly and continue to lose performance despite back flushing. The flow is very high at first, than within about 3-7 days of use the flow will slow. By day 10-15, they flow so slowly they need to be replaced. There is no preventing this or reversing it with back flushing. Sawyer filters don’t do this and cost less. I don’t recommend this product because it is not reliable and costly.

Should cost $30

I like this filter set up but even using very clean glacier spring water it wore the filter out quickly. I would imagine if the water was dirty the filter wouldn’t last past a few liters. The back flush works a few times but the debris’s go right back into the dirty water bag so it’s counterintuitive. I recommend cleaning the filter separately but it’s a lot of extra work when you’re in the mountains. In conclusion this is overpriced for the quality and time you will get out of it. They should come with two filters rather than charging $75 for a filter they know is going to clog up in a few days. They should make the filter better or lower the replacement costs.

Stuck in the mountains twice now with no water!

I initially liked this product on my first 2-3 backpacking trips, then on trip number 4 or 5, the filter completely stopped working. I followed the instructions and backwashed every time I used it. I bought a new filter thinking maybe it just sat too long between uses. The new filter worked once. Then on my second trip, same scenario. We forgot our backup tablets and had one of the worst hikes out of the woods of my life. My wife and I were both terribly dehydrated. We had to boil lake water and each drink a liter of hot water to have enough energy to make it out. I'm tossing this in the trash and going back to chlorine dioxide tablets with a backup lifestraw! Lighter and more reliable!

Replacement for original filter that has been used a lot.

I bought this to have on hand for when the original gets too slow. Haven't used this one yet, so review is based on original filter that is came with the GravityWorks system. The whole system is easy to use and definitely more efficient and easier on the hands than pumping. 4 instead of 5 stars because Gravity Works filters are a bit finicky to get the air out of and get the water running the first time after being stored (so each time we filter in camp after draining and putting away the filter). It may be more finicky after many uses than when new. Once you get the water flowing, it works well and is quick to filter volumes of water.

Easy to use. Bring backup for viruses

I've been using this with the 4L system for almost a year now. I love the filter - it's efficient and no-fuss. Has filtered the muddy Colorado. Easy to backflush (do this regularly!) Also, it's quite easy to swap out reservoirs and I was able to combine my clean reservoir + hose with the osprey bite valve to make this my primary drinking reservoir. My one note, which isn't really beef with this filter: I caught norovirus, probably from contaminated water. But these filters don't claim they catch viruses. Will be carrying tablets for a second round of treatment form now on.

Worked for a couple trips. Clogged on 3rd

Like others have said, it works for a few trips and then it clogs with no chance of fixing. Last trip 12 miles in and going to use my platypus and it was clogged. So dissapointing to me and my group who I was in charge of clean water. We had to use a buddies light pen which got us through the trip. Quite expensive for the replacement part. I will not be ordering this again.

high hopes, disappointment

I used this filter on 2 to 3 backpacking trips, and it worked great. With awesome for my group. Built a lot of water fast. Unfortunately, after the 2 to 3 trips, it stopped working. Barely a trickle would come out of the filter. Backflowed many times with 4 to 6 L of water, no improvement. thought “maybe it froze or I dropped it “, so I bought a new filter. Same thing happened.
