Check before buying
This is an excellent bike rack, especially for the price. Used it on a 5 hour trip to the beach and it did not shift at all and the bikes are well secured. However, and this is a big however, I bought it because I needed to transport three bikes, two adult and one child's. I used the guide provided on the REI website and was told that for my van, this would hold three bikes. I downloaded and read the manual for it before buying and felt confident. It was not until I opened the box and read the additonal instructions did I learn that because of the particular design of my old Nissan Quest van, it would only hold two bikes. This was the day before the trip but luckily, my daughter's bike was able to fit inside the van. Also, if your vehicle has a large glass panel, it will only hold two. More information should have been provided on the website or the pdf of the manual so that the buyer knows for sure if their car can support three bikes.
Dependable bike rack
We use the SuperJoe Pro 3 on our minivan. It installs easily in a couple of minutes. It's well built. Once the bikes are on and the straps are tight, the rack is rock solid, over bumpy roads and at highway speeds. I would have given this rack 5 stars for its rugged construction and ease of installation, except for two things: A thin section of the rubber cover over the upper strap buckle failed on the third use (REI replaced the rack - thanks, REI). The failure did not compromise the basic operation or safety of the rack, only the ability to secure the loose strap end. Also, the rubber straps that hold the bikes onto the rack are very secure, but you have to yank pretty hard to get them on and off. Those are minor matters. This is a good rack at a reasonable price, and I'd buy it again.
Easy assembly
The hooks/straps are prelabeled to where they should be placed. It took me about 35 minutes to secure this rack to my Volvo V50 wagon. Driving 20mi at highway speed immediately after initial install through a evening downpour didn't dislodge or shift the rack system. The straps take a moment to ensure they're securely fastened, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. The only disadvantage is to resist the urge to turn on the rear wiper during a downpour since the upper arm of this rack system will sit right above the rear wiper (yes, I learned this lesson firsthand).
Nice Rack! However...
The rack is relatively simple to install, although the graphic guide and measurements in my case (VW Touareg and Honda Element) were not quite right - so I simply adjusted it to fit while on the vehicle(s). It proved to be a challenge trying to get a women's bike on the rack. I ended up having to remove the front wheel as well as the seat in order to get another (men's) bike on the rack next to the women's mountain bike. Without the luxury of quick release wheels or seat on a women's BEACH CRUISER you have to resort to gymnastics get it on with (2) more bikes - not to mention the strength needed to hold it up and maneuver it past all the hardware. Yakima evidently makes a cross-bar tube accessory you can purchase separately to add to, and use with women's bikes - I need to get a couple of these to see if they will help. It would have been nice to have known about the accessory up front though. All said, (1) women's beach cruiser, (1) men's mountain bike, (1) women's mountain bike - it handled them all together safely!
Beware
Don't buy this product if you own a Honda Civic. Even though it shows a Honda Civic in the installation instructions, it's not made for one. The rack mounts at a downward angle when on the Civic. Yakima shouldn't put a picture of or list a car for this rack that it doesn't fit on.
Very sturdy, and sharp looking
I wrestled with it during its first use, but I got the hang of it and couldnt love it more now. The rubber straps that secure the bikes are tight to attach at first, but again seem easier now, and fitting it on the trunk is really fast and easy. I would recommend the 3 bike rack rather than the 2. I had a tough time squeezing 2 bikes onto the smaller rack. Anyway, I use it frequently, and have full confidence in it.
Easy to use and durable
This is the first car rack that I have owned/used and I was nervous, but I installed it easily and if feel confident that my bike is secure. Some of the instructions in the manual are incorrect when it came to my specific model of car, but I just used some common sense and got a second opinion. Also, the straps that secure the bikes, while they feel really secure, are not that easy to get on.
Initially impressed, disappointed later
I was initially impressed with this rack. It seemed to be well built, was easy to use after learning how to install it the first time, and holds the bikes securely even at 70+ mph on the interstate. Unfortunately, after a few months of regular use I've come to see the weak links in the chain, mainly the plastic and rubber pieces. I've used this rack probably twice a week for the last six months, carrying one or two mountain bikes. Recently one of the rubber straps that holds the bike top tube snapped as I was strapping it down. Then I discovered that one of the plastic cradles was warped and pulling apart when I tried to strap the bike down. The cradles are only held to the frame with one small screw and it doesn't take much flexing (which happens when you pull the rubber straps) to work the plastic right over that screw. I returned the broken pieces to the REI store where I bought the rack and they agreed to get me replacements. But even before the replacements arrived another strap began tearing and another of the cradles warped and came off its screw. Then I noticed two places on my car trunk where the webbed straps have been rubbing and scratching up my paint. It will probably buff out but it's really the last straw. Using this rack is becoming a headache. I seem to be doing more repairs and maintenance on the rack than on my bike! I'm going to ask to return the rack for credit and find another brand that will hold up better to casual light use and not scuff up my car.
Reliable, quick install and sturdy!
Need to beef up the plastic used to hold the excess straps. Broke easily.
Awesome!
I can put it on by myself in 5 minutes. It is very stable. It also has rubber straps that you just hook in around your bike. Extremely easy. Make sure to find the correct measurement for your car from the Yakima manual.
