Room enough for 100oz hydration pack (add-on), my snacks, hat, gloves, poles, extra shirt, coat, lunch. Perfect for the day hike at Pikes Peak. Sits great, no back or should discomfort fully loaded. chapstick pocket on front and hydration magnet are awesome placements. waist and side pockets are easily accessible while hiking. even top back pocket can be reached without removing pack. Loved it. also, rain cover kept pack dry in light to medium shower. Easy to access while moving and pull on without taking pack off. Not big enough for much more gear than listed, so get next size if you need full set of clothes or bigger down coat, etc.
Everything is good except three parts. The first One is side pocket is not big enough for holding a Nalgene 1L water bottle which is very popular for outdoor person. Even people carrying small size pack still need water much. The second is "Stow on the Go" trekking pole attachment hinder arm moving and it's a big hassle. It would be much better to put trekking pole and ice axe on the back like usual way. The third is zippered large hipbelt pockets hindered by harness, and salesman said that it's one size design for all osprey pack. It would be better accessable by moving hipbelt pocket a little bit front to avoid just right under harness.
I'm living in Japan right now, and taking advantage of the MANY day hikes Japan has to offer. I'm lucky enough to be able to rent gear for my hikes. I love this pack so much that I came here to buy my own. I'm 5'4" and 35. I'm a casual hiker, I only do day hikes with varying degrees of difficulty. The reason I finally decided to buy this pack is the completion of my Mount Fuji climb. I had enough room for my 3L water bladder, a smart wool long sleeve tee, raincoat and pants, gaiters, gloves and a polartec cowl, all in the main pack. I did not have to disconnect my hydration tube to insert my bladder, the hole is large enough for it to slide through. The top pocket is plenty big for my keys (on the convenient hook) and energy bars/trail mix while I keep my first aid type stuff in the front pocket. The hip straps also have generous pockets, although I took off a star because the zippers are not the best. They should (in my opinion) zip closed the other way. The small pocket on the right strap is great for lip balm! The mesh back does a great job of keeping my back cool. Really halls to regulate the temperature on a vertical climb when it gets cold/hot so quickly. The hip straps also it me in just the right place and really distribute weight well. I had no issues either with scrambling up rocks on all fours or descending in lava rock and sand. This bag really feels like part of me!
I bought this pack for day hikes and scrambles. I love the fact that it came in sizes, since packs can often be too big on my frame. The Small was a perfect fit, and with all the adjustments, it stayed put. The weight was evenly distributed, even with the hydration pack addition. I went for 9 hours, 17 miles up Mt. Charleston peak, and I never had discomfort from the pack. I was in a tank top, and it didn't rub my shoulders at all. After I filled it with my essentials, there was still tons of room left over in the pack. Would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a sturdy, comfortable pack that holds a lot of stuff!
I bought this backpack for my mom (5'3" 61 years) who was using a mid-90's book bag for hiking. She needed the ability to carry more water and gear comfortably and be able to hike long all day hikes. We want to hike some of Colorado's 14ers and this bag was suggested to us. It fits her shorter upper body and her shoulders and does not hit her bottom as she walks so she likes it as it is comfortable. It has plenty of pockets and it includes a backpack rain cover (cool!) that is attached to the bag and has its own pocket. It has plenty of places to hang things and it will work great for the 14ers this summer and many more to come. Cons- The area for the water bladder is a bit clumsy- the place it hangs from is harder to get to for her and the path of the hose is a bit different than I am used to in my backpack.
Pack holds everything needed for a long day hike but compacts for less gear. Fits my long torso (Size M) well; Comfortably padded shoulder harness; Stable when scrambling; cool, ventilated back support; handy small pockets for camera, phone, lip balm and tissues. Reachable water bottle pockets as an alternative/addition to hydration system capability. Hoping for outside back map pocket like some other Osprey models but found the clip handy for holding a hat. Included rain fly a bonus. Trekking pole loops aren't practical when climbing through narrow spaces, poles can be fastened into a side pocket. Durable fabric, didn't rip when caught on a sharp downed tree limb.
I was looking for a nice and versatile day pack to take to Peru for two days in the Colca Canyon and a 4-day Inca Trail trek to Machu Picchu. I had trouble finding a pack to fit my very short torso. I tried on a ton and this was the only one that I could find that would hit me at the waist in the right spot and not hit me in the back of the head if I tilted it back. It was big enough to use as my carryon and everyday pack and the pack I carried on the Inca Trail. I could fit a large nalgene, a light sweater, a light rain coat, a rolled up t-shirt, a book, my small point-and-shoot camera and some snacks. While it was filled with all these items I didn't really feel the weight that much when wearing it because it was so adjustable. I even wore it climbing up Wayna Picchu and it wasn't a problem. My boyfriend and I took turns wearing it up the mountain and he finally understood the benefits of the mesh cooling barrier. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that there weren't enough compartments for me, but that is just the nature of smaller packs. The mesh pockets on the outside are too small for a large nalgene and I had to put it in my pack. Also, while the rain cover was great, it didn't really keep my pack 100% dry. Other than that I would highly recommend this bag.
I've used this backpack for day hikes and so far I like it. The one thing that I don't like about it are the size of the side mesh pockets. They aren't large enough to fit the common 32 oz. Nalgene bottles. I've been able to fit a smaller, more slender 22 oz. bottle in the pocket, but it's difficult to put the bottle back into the side pocket while still wearing the backpack. I've decided to just use the side pockets for stashing easy to reach snacks. I really like the pockets in the hip straps, which usually carry my chapstick, phone, and other small items, and the backpack has many adjustable straps, which are easily reachable to make minor adjustments while on the trail.
My husband and I went on a great adventure, hiking the West Highland Way in Scotland. This is a 100 mile hike which we did in 6 days. It was very challenging and I knew that I would need a perfect backpack. I am 63 years of age, small framed and short so it was important that the fit was comfortable. We had to carry our food for the day and a complete change of clothes and first aide stuff. I went to the REI store on Lamar in Austin, TX and Zach helped me find this backpack. He took lots of time and allowed me to load and unload packs until I found just the right one. I also had REI pants, shirts, rain gear, hiking boots and gloves. We were REI from head to toe. All the gear worked as advertised and we felt prepared in every way.
Bought this pack in my hometown for a trip with husband to Arizona for a week. Intended to do hiking daily, upwards of 10-12 miles each. This pack was perfect through the airport as a second carry-on, and was great for the hiking we did. It was so fantastic that I convinced husband to get the men's version at the REI store in Tucson. It held the reservior, snacks, sunglasses, DSLR camera & telephoto lens, fleece jacket, hat, maps & guide books. It was very comfortable to wear. I ended up having only 2 complaints about the pack. 1) the mesh zipper pockets on the waist belt were just a tad too small. I purchased the size small, and the pockets were just small enough that it was difficult to get phone or small point & shoot camera in and out. They fit, but not without really struggling to get them past the zipper. I would put one in one side, and one on the other for quick pictures. If the pockets were just a tiny bit bigger, it would have made for easier access. 2) There was a seam of some sort on the shoulder strap that was irritating my inner upper arm. It wasn't a problem when I was wearing long sleeves, but when I wore short sleeves, it was just scratchy. Not so much that it was a problem, just irritating. Otherwise, this was probably the best purchase that I have made in a while. I ended up wearing it for several hours a day, and never grew tired of it. We also used it for a "purse" and carried it just about everywhere we went for the week. It was truly indispensible for the trip. And now, we use it back at home when we go hiking with our preschooler and toddler sons.
