This bag is great, I have the large 2010 version. it is very roomy especially compared to some ultra efficient tight fitting sleeping bags (example TNF cat's meow). I think the rating is fairly accurate too, for the price you can't ask for much more. On the second thought, why not ask for me. If only it had full length zip, it would be perfect. The problem (at least form my end), is that while I have never felt cold in this sleeping bag, I have been too hot and full size zip would help. Secondly, you can't mate it with another bag because all Comic Downs are right zip only. Even women's versions, I don't really get it!
Bought this bag because it was pretty roomy, I'm 6' 235 lbs. and pretty inexpensive. It also packs pretty small. It fit into my packs bag compartment along with a bunch of clothes. Took it up on the Whitney Trail for 3 days. Stayed at trail camp. temps were probably low 40's and I slept in a pair of shorts and was plenty warm. Actually needed to keep it unzipped. My wife has the same bag and after packing the bags away we only found one feather in the tent. So down leakage wasn't a problem for us. The zipper was fine, a few snags, but I have never owned a zippered product that didn't occasionally snag. Besides looking like a big caterpiller, this bag is very good for the price.
I'm writing this review for the 2010 model so caveat emptor (buyer beware). This bag is WARM! I was lying on cold concrete in 15 degree weather with a thermarest pad wearing only boxers and a t shirt and I was TOASTY! This thing is way lighter than my old clunker synthetic fill bag. It packs super tiny, too! My only complaints are the bag is a bit tight if you roll around of squirm in your sleep and the zippers get caught on the shell. Maybe Kelty will beef up the zippers an make it idiot proof. I am 6' tall and find the regular model to be just snug enough. I would get the long version if i were to buy it again.... There's not any extra room and I'm not overweight by any means.
I have had this for 3+ years now. It works great up until 30' anything below that it's not enough. Now I know a +20 bag is the temperature it will keep you alive at not comfortable. I have a 2inch insulated ground pad and Merno wool pants and top. In the last trip I was shivering and staying alive at 20'. So it did it's job but was comfortable. Pros: Packs down great, drys supper quick if gets wet. Cons: not true +20 bag; Hood tightens to about 70% closed( wish it could go to 90%)
Awesome bag! We bought this bag for my husband. ( and I purchased the womens cosmic down) We took a trip to Yellowstone for our anniversary last week in June. After looking at the forcast we saw it was suppose to get down in the 20-30's. We purchased the Kelty Cosmic Down bags and weren't sure how well they would hold up for the cheaper price. They were amazing! One night it even snowed and given how warm our bags were we would have had no clue! I would HIGHLY recommend this bag for anyone who is looking for a light weight, comfortable warm sleeping bag. It was perfect.
Purchased this bag 9-27-12. I have only used this bag on one fishing trip for two nights. The temp was around 27 degrees the first night and about freezing the second. I was already wearing longjohns when I went to bed. My girlfriend and I are cold sleepers so we were worried about freezing since the temp ratings are sometimes kinda "iffy". Much to my pleasant surprise I only woke up once during the night due to nature calling. Neither one of us woke up due to being cold. Cant comment on long term durability or such but I am very happy with the temp rating and comfort. Probably going to buy a couple more for the kids. Im 5'9" and about 145 and plenty of room for me. Didnt have any issues with zippers or anything. Seems to have a coating that resists water pretty good. Held it under a faucet for several minutes while rubbing. Fairly light and small. Cant beat it for the price.
Purchased this for our 8 y.o. to upgrade from an old bulky synthetic bag. The price is excellent when purchasing gear for kids that can last them for years to come. He has used it for sleep overs, car camping, and on a 4 night backpacking trip. He has never slept so well than in this bag, with temp. well below freezing at 5100 ft. and snow still on the ground. I was wearing my hat and multiple layers and I was cold, thought about trying to get him to trade with me but he looked so comfortable. It's also light weight and packs down pretty small so he could carry it, a thermarest, all of his clothes and snacks for the trip. We bought the short and kind of wish we had got him the regular. So when he grows out of it I will eventually get this bag.
After researching numerous sleeping bags for a backpacking trip to Yosemite, I opted for this sleeping bag. It seemed to be a good middle ground for price, size, and temp rating. I used the bag for 4 nights. It was warm and comfortable. The weather didn't get below the upper 30's. I'm a cold sleeper. So, I don't think i'd trust it for lower than the 30's. I'm 5'4" and found the bag to have enough room that I didn't feel restricted, like some other bags I've used. It packs up light and small. I'm happy with my purchase.
I purchased two of these for my son and I to go to Philmont. I spoke to the Kelty rep in the store on the day of purchase. He told me it has duck down instead of goose down, and as a result it is lower priced without giving up the warmth down has to offer. It is very comfortable and light and packs down quite small. The bag is roomy enough inside. I had no issues with the zipper catching. I purchased mine on sale, so I feel I got a great bargain. This is an excellent sleeping bag. I suggest if you purchase this, to also get a waterproof sack for it. That way if your backpack cover leaks or you spill something inside your backpack, the bag will stay dry. The one thing you have to be careful with is not getting it wet. Down doesn't insulate very well when wet.
Warm, roomy, and light enough to haul around for a couple days worth of hiking. I used this bag with a liner in around 30 degree weather and was overly warm. My wife has the same bag and is a cold sleeper and was toasty as well. This is an excellent buy for the money, cheapest in its class that I have found.
