Shrink factor
I'm surprised by all the rave reviews without mention of the line dry/tumble dry no heat only directions. I bought these socks for my husband as he wanted some light summer hiking socks. When they arrived I read the directions for care and realized you can't dry with heat which I knew probably wouldn't last for us. Regardless, I gave it a go, I washed in cold/line dried but they still shrank slightly, and bunched from the inner layer shrinking more so, which seemed okay at first. He wore them once then washed/dried on low heat and they are now about half the original size/laughably inches too small. They seem like good quality but I'm not sure it's worth the hassle.
Hole after one hike.
I've used many different brands of socks, REI, icebreaker, wigwam, thoro, and wright socks are the only brand that had a hole after a single hike. Very low quality and I'm very disappointed in this product.
Used to be good but they no longer last
I bought 8-12 pairs of these maybe 5-8 years ago in the crew and quarter sock lengths. They lasted forever. Several months ago though I realized that I needed the XL size, at least in the quarter socks. I bought about 6 pairs of these. I expected them to last forever as the previous ones had. One by one each of these socks is failing with a hole in the toe. At least 4 have failed so far. Clearly their quality has gone to the dogs. I would no longer buy these. They are very comfortable, but they don't last.
Double Layer All the Way
I tried theses out for hiking and now I have three pairs and they're the only socks I wear hiking. I started out wearing just wool socks but needed a solution for the hot spots on my feet before they turned into blisters, so I added silk liner socks underneath. The hot spots went away, but it was too bulky and the tips of my toes got sore rubbing against everything. I was at REI shopping for a new sock system when I stumbled on the WrightSock double layer socks. I picked up the CoolMesh II because of the shorter height. They work beautifully! My toes have plenty of room and I have never felt hot spots with the built-in liner. I wear them on daily hikes and I wore them on my recent 38 mile backpacking trip and have no complaints.
Comfy, but shrinks, dont last
Have been using these for the past 8 years or so. I used to use petroleum jelly to reduce blisters on longer (over 15 mile) day hikes. I dont with these, and the two-layer design makes it comfortable. The earlier ones were quite sturdy, but the later ones are terrible. They shrink with each wash, and has holes after using a few times. If you can afford to buy a new pair every month, or if you need one for a particular hike or a race, go for it. Otherwise, maybe get liner socks and some other good pair.
Do not buy these socks for rigorous hiking!
I bought a pair of these socks at REI for hiking and they were a complete disaster! On day 3 of a six day hike they developed holes in the toe of both feet. Luckily I’d brought along a pair of Darn Tough socks, which saw me through the remaining three days of hiking. I will not ever buy these socks again. They are not made to stand up to the rigors of mountain trail hiking!
Work great, only ones I now trust.
I've been using these for about 5 years now after getting back into backpacking. I'm always trying out new gear, even stuff I know works fine like the Wrightsocks. This year did about a 70 mile trip and tried another brand to start. 8 hours and 10 miles into the first day start feeling a blisters in both feet due to moisture buildup. It was a bit too late at that point, but changed to the Wrightsocks, no blister issues the rest of the trip. Even wet didn't have any issues. Last time I'm going to try an alternative brand of socks at this point, if it's working great no reason to change.
Kind of single use socks
I bought 4 pairs of these socks. The first hole appeared very soon, about a month after purchase, the others slowly followed. Holes start always on the heels or on the tiptoes and on the outer part of the sock. They were only used going to the office in well fitting shoes. I cannot imagine doing any strenuous activity, these would probably be really a single use socks. Although they are quite comfortable, the high price and utter lack of endurace make them waste of money.
4 year lifespan of heavy use.
I can tell you, after wearing these socks to the limit, (Baldy, Rim to Rim trail, Orderville Zion, etc) it’s been 4 years exactly and the material is now starting to disintegrate. They are my favorite socks, 4 year lifespan.
Not the same quality as before
I purchased two pairs of these socks years ago and loved, loved, loved them. Wore them to pieces. I purchased two news pairs. The socks felt wonderful on my feet. But then I hiked in them and got blisters. Two full blisters (pinky and big toe) and one almost on the other foot. What happened? I had my boots for years. It was the socks. I turned them inside out and realized that it was the toe seam. The finish of toe seams (the end of the seam row) was smooth in the old socks. In the new ones it was a bump of seamage which rubbed on my feet and caused the blisters. I have to return these and find new socks. Also, while I didn't have an issue with this on a short hike, there is ribbing in the sock body that wasn't there before. I so wish they hadn't changed the product. I wish I had believed the other negative reviews that I read about this product.
