My dog borrowed my gear
Camping in NC and little flies kept getting on old (14) Annie's face, her eyes and mouth. Head net worked great and allowed her peaceful sleep.
1000's of mosquitos
I was very disappointed with this head net. The picture is misleading because it shows the product with adequate netting reaching her shoulders over a hat. I have a mil spec boonie hat, and the netting is too short, leaving the netting above the shoulders exposeing the neck when the cord is cinched and if you don't cinch it the blood suckers manage to fly up inside the net. My conclusion is that the manufacturers must have altered the original pattern. Another mention, this is not No-See-Em netting, but had larger holes which I didn't care for. REI needs their own label on a headnet that has a superior design to this offering.
Disappointed
It doesn't fit my brimmed hat which has 2.25 inch side brims and 3.5 inch front and back brims (OR brand). The problem I think is that the top radius is only 4 in diameter (perfect for a ball cap) while the actual top of my hat is 4.5 w x 7 long . I don't consider my oversized and it would be nice if someone made a larger head net to accommodate OR hats. I think this net will only work well for floppy hats with small brims and ball caps. Ben's has the same problem. I will try to modify it by cutting out the top ribbon circle where the netting is bunched up and hand sew a larger ribbon into so it might have enough length to reach my shoulders, back and front.
Light, inexpensive, but a little small.
It's very small, light, and less expensive than other nets. It is more easy to see through than some because the mesh is not as fine. My primary complaint is that it did not have adequate circumference, interior volume, or size. It was always against my nose, chin, and just didn't have enough room inside. particularly with a hat on which most people will be using outdoors in some form. (Not a good net to use with a full brimmed hat, it won't fit.) Small headed people using a baseball cap might be ok. It's small size was a consistent problem every time I put it on and tried to use it.
Keeps bugs out
I purchased this for a hiking trip because I knew sandflies were going to be an issue. I used this with a standard hat hoping it would feel ok and it worked great. It kept everything out and had enough stretch at the bottom so I could quickly eat something or use my camelpak. It’s a new mainstay for my hiking gear.
I absolutely love this
I go bird watching at a farm pond in the evening (sandhill crane chick just hatched!!) and I truly wouldn't be able to stay out there without this net. I'm pleasantly surprised by how effective this is. The frustrated little mosquitoes don't know what to think. I can still see clearly through my binoculars and camera and I tend to forget I'm wearing it. I wear a fairly wide brimmed adventure hat and the net fits perfectly with excellent coverage. Some of my friends thought I was a little nuts, but they don't have pictures of a sandhill crane chick either.
Golf saver
I bought this product on a whim and stuck it into a pocket on my golf bag. While playing a round in the early spring on Green River Golf Course, Santa Ana Canyon, I was attacked by a swarm of black flies, they were very determined. On the 3rd tee I pulled out this tiny marvel and was very pleased with the results. My mates were extremely jealous and made several offers to purchase, offers refused of course, resulting in death threats and name calling. It was made obvious that I had a superior intelligence and a lower handicap.
Will never hike without
After a constant mosquito swarm back backing in Yellow Stone, I will never travel without a mosquito net. The bug spray kept them from biting, but the constant swarming right in my face was terrible. I even had one fly in my mouth. Next back backing trip by a lake in Glacier National Park, bug swarm, popped this on and realized this was the best $13 I've spent at REI. It kept the swarm off my face and it was heaven. Only downside was trying to drink from a canteen and realizing I was wearing a mesh. This is light, packs to nothing, and I stopped noticing it was on.
Excellent Weapon Against Mosquitoes!
Used on the Pacific Crest Trail this summer with lots of voracious mosquitoes. Was unobtrusive and very effective. No bites on neck/face at all during 5 days. Worried about it fitting over my REI Paddlers hat, but it did.
Works very well with a wide brimmed hat
You need a hat with a brim all around it to keep the mosquito netting away from your face to prevent it sticking to your face. I did not have any problems breathing while wearing it. I was backpacking for two hours in a swampy, heavily wooded location. There were clouds of mosquitos all around me the entire time, but this absolutely kept them off of my face and upper neck. You will still need mosquito repellant on the lower part of your neck as this cinches up about halfway down your neck.
