Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great, easy to use I bought these crampons to use on casual (no vertical ice!) routes. Last weekend, I took them up Mount Monadnock in New Hampshire. They worked great both on shallow and steeper areas of the hike. They had good grip on packed snow and on the hard ice near the summit. Very easy to use. I adjusted them and put them on for the first time on the trail without any difficulties. The only issue I had is that they were sharp enough that sometimes I poked holes through the ankles of my snow pants! Guess they're pretty sharp out of the box, and I should walk more carefully. Otherwise, they're great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sasquatch For those of you like myself cursed with big feet, here is a photo of the crampons WITH THE LONG CENTER BAR on size 15 plastic mountain boots. The bar still had a couple of holes left.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No complaints. I use these crampons when microspikes aren't enough for traction. I bought a case to put them in because they are sharp! I have used them occasionally on compact snow and ice for 2 years and they still look good- no rusting or discoloring. I can put them on without removing my mittens- important for a lady with cold fingers! The strap is a little long for me (size 8.5 womens) so I have to loop the strap and tie again so I don't trip on it, but one could cut and seal it to perfect length.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Alpine Mountaineering Crampons These crampons are designed for alpine travel on glacier ice and frozen snow. They work very well for steep ice, but they are not designed for vertical ice climbing. If you use these for their intended purpose --- climbing mountains in a traditional alpine style --- they are great crampons. I have used them with mountaineering double boots, and I have also strapped them onto my leather backpacking boots. Obviously the security on the mountaineering boots is good, but they were okay for walking over ice in the backpacking boots too. On my mountaineering boots, they were even pretty secure without the straps engaged. They never popped off the boot, even when others, with step-in crampons did pop off. I think this is because as the rand wears out, the step-ins become less secure. The strap-ons don't rely on the rand, so they stay secure.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great first pair I bought these for my first trip to Shasta for attachment to a pair of stout hiking boots. The crampons pack up tight and take up little space on my gear. They are steel so weight could be an issue for some, but I like the durability of steel vs aluminum. Easy to put on and take off. Traction is superb but I'd purchase a different pair for ice climbing. Durability seems ok, but I'm concerned that the way the strap runs through the toe cap, it may wear through or crack over time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great deal, great traction I bought these with my member 20% off coupon for my hike in the snow at Cucamonga Peak about a week ago. Never would have made it without them. At the begining there was a lot of transitioning from dirt to snow and back again. I was worried about damaging my new gear on the rocks, but they did awesome. They are easy to remove even with cold/slightly numb fingers and the snow, the dirt didnt clump up inside them aaaand I didnt slip and fall to my death, so thats good.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Tough and functional They worked just fine for me and after a lot of miles over ice and a lot of rough volcanic rock, these still look like new (but more shiny I guess). They are tough. These aren't designed for highly-technical ice climbing, but they work great for less challenging settings when you need crampons to keep from sliding off a mountain. Make sure that you have pretty rigid boots and that you know how to strap them on before you hit the slopes (there are no instructions in the box but there are a few videos on U-tube).

I am looking for a decent pair of crampons for some light technical work. With the extender would these work with size 13 Asolo Bajura GTX trekking boots?

Asked by: yukoncornelius
Yes, these will work with your size 13 Asolo boots as long as you attach a Long Center Bar.

The specs on this one do not mention if they can be used w/ AT boots?

Asked by: trimike
Black Diamond does not recommend using the Contact Strap Crampons with AT boots. They do not believe the Contacts will attach securely to the boots. Black Diamond recommends the Black Diamond Sabretooth Pro Step-In Crampons.

I intend to use them on Asolo Drifter hiking boots. The shape of the boot around the heel is different than mountaineering boots, the sole is further back than the heel so the crampon basket doesn't hug the boot leaving some space in between. Is this OK?

Asked by: EgorR
We would not recommend using the Asolo Drifters with the Contact Crampons. The sole and the shank on the Drifters will not provide enough support for any crampons. Also, the suede and nylon on the boots will not be stiff enough when the straps need to be tightened.
