Good Design
The rack is well designed and sturdy. I have it mounted directly to Thule Aero bars bolted onto our pickup bed cover, so kind of a weird mount. It is not supposed to work on this type of rack, but a little ingenuity got it on. We don't use the pivot feature, but it seems to work well in theory. The removable rear wheel tray makes it reasonable to leave on all the time if desired, and it works fine as a single bike rack in this mode. My only complaint is the cost.
Tandem roof bike carrier
I have a Thule tandem roof bike carrier. Good design and well built. I've traveled several hundred miles now with no problems at all. The only critical comment is that the directions brochure was not up-to-date and therefore inaccurate. Consequently, an extra part was included on the brochure but was not included in the package of parts. Fortunately, it was not necessary. When I called and talked with the Thule rep, I had the feeling they did not quite know what I was saying. The missing part they never did send me. But all's well that ends well since that part was not required. Thule is a great name and should give me many years of service.
Questionable Skewer
I bought this rack in May 2021, and in July 2021 the skewer broke. The bike was loaded onto the rack and ready to go. I noticed the lever from the skewer fell to the ground after I had tightened it as directed from the product manual. I am so lucky that we hadn't started moving in the vehicle yet. The skewer had been stored in a safe dry place and had only been used less than a dozen times. This rack is definitely a specialty item and many stores don't carry it. Something to consider before buying this rack. If this item breaks while the car is driving the result could be very very bad. If it breaks and you notice like in our case you are stuck not being able to take your bike home. Ugggh. So bummed right now.
Good Product
Because I am nervous when relying only on the "rocket sprocket" to hold this bike on the roof of my car, I usually add additional straps as insurance. The fact that it really requires 2 people to load is not too much of an inconvenience for a tandem bike but it is misleading advertising. I would like to be able to buy a locking skewer to minimize risk that someone may have played with the system. I was also really annoyed to have to buy an extra windscreen to muffle the noise from the rack. Yes, I would recommend this to a friend but I would also suggest that they compare it to other models.
Pleased with our Thule Tandem Carrier
We have used our Thule Tandem Carrier for over 3 years and are happy with it. I am 75 and can easily load our tandem by myself. Four suggestions: 1) Mount the carrier on the passenger side. 2) Open the passenger side door before loading. 3) Attach the handle stabilizer strap before loading. 4) For extra stability, add a ratchet tie down strap that goes across the bicycle cross bar. (Note: the strap should be twisted to prevent it from whistling in the wind.)
Great choice for Cannondale Tandem
I carry my Cannondale RT3000 on top of my 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser. I love that I can load and unload the tandem by myself. The carrier also holds the bike securely even on long road trips. The carrier has been on my car for over 2 years, winters included, and looks as good as the day it was installed. My only wish is that it could lock like my Thule single bike carriers. If it were one key compatible, it would be perfect.
Buying a second for my other car
I use this on my Volvo XC to carry my tandem as well as my single bikes. Very easy to use. I see one reviewer claimed to need two people to load a tandem. As a woman of 125 lbs. at 5'2" I have no problem loading mine all by myself. I am about to buy another for my other car.
Easy to use tandem carrier
I have the Thule tandem carrier mounted on my Mini Cooper. As a senior age 70 I find the carrier easy to use. The pivot for the front fork makes it easy for me to load my tandem bike by myself. Also, the two piece carrier adds to the convenience of storing the carrier.
Excellent
Its nice when the engineering lives up to the marketing hype! this is a good example.
This is a great rack but . . .
Thule seriously needs to provide an adapter to allow use with their aero bars.
