Great Shorts, Sizes Run Big

These shorts are amazing, I've worn them on several 20+ mile rides and the padding is more than adequate. You definitely want to try a pair on before buying them, I ordered a M and the leg length is perfect, but the waist is way to high. In order for the pad to be in the right place, I have to roll up the back waist of these a few times (but not the front). It seems like they just put way too much material in the rear (and I have a pretty big butt). I'm 5'9 170 and the M is too large for me. I suspect that a Small would have been too small since the leg length and front of the shorts fit correctly for me with the Medium. Try them on first!!

Lots of foam to little effect

Bought this in anticipation of a long bike tour, but returned them after a few days of commuting. First, the bulky chamois would bunch and create uncomfortable spots. Secondly, it seems that the reason the padding is so bulky is to make up for the fact that foam is not particularly resiliant to being compressed. Compared to the thinner Sugoi Evolution shorts or either of the Novarro gel shorts, the foam on these requires little force to pinch between your two fingers. The others shorts seem to use a more closed cell foam, and thus are not only thinner (and thus more comfortable) but provide more resiliance and cushioning during the ride.

Meh

For your neighborhood jaunts, these shorts will serve their purpose. If you're doing any distance riding, be sure that heavily padded shorts will work for you. It didn't for me. Last 100-mile ride, I was hating life by mile 20. I returned them (thank you, REI!) and bought some with much less padding, which have worked out great. I've got a boney rear end (155lbs, 5'11") and just could not get along with these shorts. It will work for some, as we're all different, so just make sure it will work for you. Good way is to look at your current shorts and see how thick it is and compare.

Excellent for commuting

I commute to work 3 days a week, about a half hour ride; while it's not so long as to be uncomfortable without padding, I've found that it makes the ride in just that much more comfortable. As for the structure of the padding, it's nicely positioned for a guy's anatomy, and not so thick as to be uncomfortable while walking around. The only downside I can find to these shorts is that they're too long; I'd really prefer a shorter inseam, but the market seems to be trending in the other direction.

Good So Far

I just got a Trek 1.1 bike to ride 18 miles round trip to work to save on gas and get in shape. The seat on my bike was uncomfortable even with added gel pad. Order these shorts and they feel really good. I did 11 miles yesterday and I was fine and could have kept going. I have been riding for about a week doing between 4-7 miles on my rides using these shorts. If they hold up well after a month or two I will be buying another pair.

Excellent

Love these shorts. They are excellent. Extremely comfortable in general, but especially during a ride. They're smooth and have a nice feel about them, but are also well built. Comfortable, heavy fabric. Great stitching. Since buying these I bought another brand of shorts that was on sale (Canari). Didn't fit right and the fabric wasn't as good. Returned 'em and ordered another pair of these. Just love 'em!

Updated review after 4 months

I have been using these shorts for about 4 months now and have 2 pair so they get washed alot. They are still holding up well like new. I air dry them over a vent. The longest ride I have done so far is probably 22 miles and frequently do 8-12 at a given time. They are very comfortable. As a new cyclists, I haven't owned any other pair yet but I dont know how another pair could be much better.

Best in class

Due to the current weather, these are mostly worn while on the indoor trainer. I have had them for ~6 weeks with no issues. The short material has a matte surface so they stay in place throughout the ride without having to stop and adjust. The chamois is excellent. I am 6' and 235 and wear a large. The xl looked like I was wearing a diaper.

Love these shorts

I have shorts that cost more than twice as much that I do not like nearly as much. I have had one pair for more than a year of frequent use. They show no signs of wear, and the chamois is as comfortable as when they were new. I logged on to REI today to make sure that they still have them, as I intend to pick up two more pairs today.
