This is my second pair, and not that I wore out the first pair, but purchased to ensure years of bliss for my feet in tough terrain because the common theme is that favorite models often get discontinued and the hunt ensues all over again. The last that this boot is built on fits my feet PERFECTLY with a secure heel, little significant drop (most of my other shoes, hiking or not, are zero-drop), and a roomy toe box (purchased 1/2 size up from my normal size). I took my first pair on a backpacking trek across the 100 Mile Wilderness in Maine last fall, including a summit of Katahdin. It was my first long multi-day trip. They were absolutely stellar.
Got them off used off REI in pretty good condition. Haven't actually used them for much hiking, I mostly wear them day to day as I'm on my feet a lot and take public transit to get around. They're truly waterproof and keep me dry and comfortable in rainy cold Portland weather. Boots are also comfortable in the hot summer weather. Unfortunately after daily abuse for 5 years, they've started to fall apart, but I'm going to take em to a local boot cobbler and see it they can repair them. I love these boots!
I'm obsessed with these boots! Stylish, sturdy, super supportive & comfortable right out of the box. I added some custom insoles because I have a really high arch & they are just a dream. Seriously. These boots carried me through all of New Zealand, Australia, Costa Rica, countless Oregon hikes & I even wore them for our snowy woods engagement photos. They're the best boots I've ever owned.
I loved these boots for 12 months. No break in, fit from the get go. Dry and cozy no matter the weather. Holding me on slippery rocks and ice like nothing happened. Saved my ankles on many occasions. Two weeks past 1 year of use (day hikes, nothing crazy, moderate difficulty trails up to 10 miles, mostly cold season hiking) and a seam broke on the right boot at the inner side at the joint of arch and toes. On inspection, the same is about to happen on the left boot as well. These turned out the shortest living hiking boots I have ever owned. If you can afford buying a new pair of $$$ boots - go for it, they will make you happy, while they last.
I’ve owned many hiking boots but they always hurt my feet. Almost giving up on ever finding a pair that would feel comfortable for long hikes I found these at the store. I was skeptical these would work and was surprised how comfortable they are. I use these year-round from hiking during the winter, snow shoeing and hikes during the summer. Best purchase ever!
I just bought my fourth pair of Lowa Renegade GTX Mid Hike Boots - other hiking boots don't fit me as well so I am stuck with it. I used to be very happy with this brand, but somewhat disheartened by the lesser quality of the last pair. The quality has definitely deteriorated over the years. My third pair wore out much faster than the previous two pairs after minimal use in less than five years. The soles separated during the beginning of a hiking trip in Washington State last summer. I had to duck tape them to help me to get through to the end. The waterproof function held pretty well though - despite of separated soles, the feet remained dry hiking on snow batches.
These boots are amazing. I’ve had them for over a year and still hold strong. I wear them everyday to work (I work with public lands so often hiking in all sorts of conditions) and just spent the weekend camping during the rainiest trip I’ve ever taken, and these boots didn’t fail. They never dried out but my feet stayed dry. They are expensive, and I did get them on sale. But after having them for the past year I would probably buy them full price. REI has some pretty good sales throughout the year, so if you’re on the market for a bomber pair of boots keep your eyes peeled for when they’re on sale.
I have used these boots less than a year and definitely no more than 10 times. In summer they make my feel very hot even wearing thin socks. The top laces do not stay closed and therefore I do not feel the ankle support. I wanted to like them because of the embarrassing amount of money I spent on them but on the second time exposing them to water the seam at the front started to come apart. After a couple of uses they also look beaten as if they were old. Will be returning this pair and going back to Vasque, which last longer and are cheaper than these boots. Very disappointed.
In theory these are great boots. I bought them for field work in the desert. They did not hold up as it has been 2.5 months and the seems are ripping on the inside part of the foot. This is happening on both shoes.
I have really weird feet! High arches, extra bones, bowed legs, etc. I have custom orthotics. I have bought and returned almost every shoe in the REI stores and finally purchased these after a three year hunt. THEY ARE AMAZING!!!!! I just returned from the REI Scotland Highlands and Islands hiking trip. Every terrain possible, RAIN, 6-12 miles a day, rocks, rain, grass, trail, more rain, and did I mention rain? My feet were dry and not a single blister!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In my eyes it was a complete miracle.
