I have two choices of footwear when heading out to walk the dog in the fields here in the fells of England—Wellies or these. Wet, muddy conditions are standard. I have been wearing these regularly for a month. First day hiking for an hour through soaking wet high grass and my feet remained dry and comfortable. Keeps decent traction on rocky terrain when caked in mud. I did a three day hike in them and no problems at all. Not as easy as I would like to slip into and out of as my last pair of boots because the ankle cuff still is a bit stiff but it feels good walking, and that's what is important. The laces took a few times to master too. I like them.
As a person who hikes everyday for my job, I get to know boots very well. These boots are the most comfortable boots I have but their best use is on trails in mostly dry conditions. The soles are not sufficiently rugged for off trail, steep conditions nor is the waterproofing sufficient for really wet and snowy conditions. I recently wore them on a 4 day hike on trails--after a half day of rain and later walking in snow, my feet were soaked. Otherwise, if you stick to trails and mostly hike in dry conditions, they are a great boot for those of us with 'duck feet' (wide)!
I bought some Oboz boots about 1.5 months before a trip to Yosemite to allow time for break-in. Although I don't have wide feet, they gave me blisters on the outside of both of my big toes, and that had never happened to me before. Three days before leaving for my trip, I bought these Keens. I wore them once to walk my dog and once to the movies. The third time I wore them was on a 16-17 mi. hike in Yosemite that included Four Mile Trail and Panorama Trail. The next day we hiked the Upper Yosemite Falls trail, almost 8 miles. These Keens were super comfy and didn't cause me any blisters. In fact, the blisters caused by the Oboz were healing while on my trip. Other hikers in my group who had broken in boots were wrapping their feet and toes because of their blisters, and I was perfectly content in my Keens. I also walked through lots of streams and mud, and the boots kept my feet dry. Thank you Keen for making such a great boot! They give more support (higher rise and stiffer sole) than my old Targhee II mid-height boot. [...]
I was looking for a sturdy, durable boot to go backpacking in. This was late fall in the mountains, so we were carrying a lot of gear, and it was pretty chilly. I was also hoping to get a boot that could double as my winter boot for snowy winters in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Pyrenees has not disappointed me yet! It is super comfortable (I am flat-footed), sturdy, waterproof, and WARM! We just had some very cold, blizzard-like conditions here and I was so impressed by their ability to trudge through snowdrifts while keeping my feet dry and toasty. Definitely a great buy.
I purchased these about a year ago for hiking & backpacking. They have great traction, the uppers are *very* durable (MUCH better than the Targhee), no break in period was needed & they're water resistant. The one thing that has bummed me out about them ... I ended up falling madly in love with them for their comfort and I wear them almost every day--in town, not just for hiking--and the soles have worn down very, very quickly. I know wearing them on asphalt & concrete isn't the intended use, so I guess I can't fault the shoes. ;)
These are great boots that suit a lot of different tasks. I've worn them on long walks in the city, hiking through torrential rain in the woods, and carrying loads of equipment out into the field for work, and for every circumstance they've held up and been really comfortable. They've always kept my feet warm and dry too, even stomping through mud and puddles. They required no break in, and the materials are very high quality. That being said, as they are a boot made for good ankle support, the ankle is very stiff. If you're looking for a little more flexibility in the ankle, I would go for something different, but if you want a lot of support then these boots are excellent. If given the choice, I would definitely buy these boots over and over again!
Hi. Just wanted to point out, for those who might order online, that fit true to size unlike most other Keen shoes that I've tried out. Typically, you need about 1/2 size larger than your normal shoe size in a Keen (i.e. if you normally wear a 8 1/2 you'd wear a 9 in Keen). But in this shoe, I think you'll take your normal size (or at least that's how they fit for me). They were nice and wide, like most Keen's. A bit taller than the mid hiking boots (i.e. a bit higher than the Targhee & Voyageur). Very nice looking. [...]
These boots are awesome. They are cut higher up the ankle than most boots which protects your ankles better. They run true to size and absolutely no break in required. There is no pinching or hot spots and the toe box is wide. I wore them for the 1st time on a 6 mile hike in Cuyamaca and no blisters! My feet did get a little warm in them but I was wearing 2 pairs of socks at the time. I'm known as a klutz and always trip, not in these, they are not heavy or cumbersome. I highly recommend these regardless or price.
These shoes do not live up to what I expected from Keen. I love Keen shoes and have been a fan for a few years now. Most of them "hug" your feet and feel like slippers when you wear them. These do not. At first I thought that these shoes just needed to be broken in. What I found after wearing them for less than a month is that the "support" actually deteriorated. They are not very water resistant. The shoe has stretched so much in less than a month that they feel a size bigger and almost like a men's shoe in width. the support and cushioning is non existent. I have a back ache and knee pain after only wearing them for an hour long hike. The only positive thing I can say is they have super traction. If you're looking for comfort, don't look to these shoes!
I bought these [...] after asking for something as comfortable as, but more waterproof than, the Keen Targhees. Turns out these are perfect for me. I walk my dog twice daily for up to 2 hours at a time in all weathers and these boots are both seriously comfortable and very waterproof. They keep my feet dry in the pouring rain even after 3 months of constant use. They are also easy to care for since the entire upper is leather instead of a leather and material mix. That makes it easier to clean the dirt off of them and easier to apply care products to prevent the upper from cracking and/or splitting away from the sole at the sides. They might not be what you want for arduous hiking trips with lots of rocky ground, but for daily use on country paths or light hikes they are great.
