gets the job done
Bought this rack probably 9 months ago now. I ride 6-30 miles daily and have a cheap bag mounted on top. The rack took some muscle to install since it didn't want to stretch wide enough to get around my Diamondback Sorrento but it's stayed put since I put it there. I don't have much weight on the rack but dirt paths, stairs and curbs have not managed to hurt this thing. I did have one instance of rattling, and that was because I didn't tighten a bolt properly. It seems any problems with this rack are OPERATOR ERROR. On that note, take care when installing with the supplied bolts, they are aluminum and I stripped the heads on two of them.
Stout, sturdy and cheap
Great buy for the bucks, and amazingly sturdy, bought one for wife's commuter bike with a large Wald basket . We were amazing that rack took side impact tap from car bumper that lifted bike and rider. All were ok, rim took a bit of work and rack very slight bend. Mounts easy using clamp around seat post using old sturdy rear light mount. As part of our ride is on single track I put inner tubes over the steel straps where contacting alum frame. No squeaks. Yup, a very nice rack for the money.
Great Product!
I got this as a Christmas gift 2 years ago. I am very pleased with the construction and size of this rack. I began using it on my commute to and from work (32 miles round trip). It did an outstanding job carrying lunch, extra clothes, and work boots. Then I rode the Great Allegheny Passage last July with my all gear on it. I didn't have a front rack; only this one in the back. I did the camping thing which meant more weight. I think I had about 45 to 50 lbs. on it. It performed flawlessly. GREAT PRODUCT. It's mounted on my Jamis Aurora tour bike. I don't know how it would be on another style of bike or on a dirt path. But packed limestone and regular roads didn't bother it!
Stacked high!
This is the 3rd rack I have had. My first rack was a bike that was stolen. It was awesome! Second one is on my wife's bike...is still awesome! Third one is on my new bike... The rack needed to be stretched a little to fit my bike (Disc brakes on the new bike) but it is on solid! I have recently used it on a camping trip with about 55lbs of gear! (about the limit...oops!) and it was great! A little wobbly but fine! Make sure you tighten all the bolts and your set to go! Highly Recommended!
Great Rack, Killer Price
This rack was simple to install, is extremely sturdy, and has an unbeatable price. If you take care to install it well, it will support lots of weight, and coupled with panniers, this would make a great rack for long trips. No rattling or wiggling on my bike! Like all "universal" racks, it will take a somewhat mechanically inclined user to install this correctly. It may take some tweaking, bending, thought, and ingenuity to install it on you bike, but assuming you don't have disk breaks, it should work for nearly any bike. If you have disks, you may have to make your own bracket to get around the caliper, but if you're handy in a hardware store, you can make it work.
Good BasicRacks Needs a Little TLC to install
Real simple- it took a little effort to install on my Specialized Crosstrail Hybrid. Not the fault of the rack.The seat stay and chain stays seemed to be wider than normal to accommodate the disc-hub-38c tire wheels. So a slight bit of forcing the rack to match up with the holes in the seat stays was necessary, I also had to use a longer bolt, reversed with nut side facing outward because the supplied bolts were not long enough. Problem solved! To fix the rack to the seat tube required full extemsion of the rack sliders. Not a problem- but the supplied hardware for a tube with no bolt-holes would not have been a good option. Luckily, the bike has pre- drilled holes at the top of the seat stay. Finished product was stiff and solid. Took me about two hours to install given the seat/chainstay issue. And I did not have to curse once to get the job done.
simple and sturdy
This is a great inexpensive and decent quality rack. Now I don't have to carry everything in a backpack on rides. Easy to mount and matches with my frame nicely.
Solid rack at a great price
Purchased this rack for my Bianchi San Jose, to use on my 16 mile daily commute and some light touring (Chicago to Detroit). I decided on this model exclusively because of its very reasonable price. The rack feels sturdy, but it is not particularly heavy. Installation is straight-forward, and only requires an allen wrench, screwdriver, and a little planning (adjust the seat post stays to approximately the proper length before screwing it into the frame). The included hardware had screws long enough to accommodate my rear fender, although I did have to stretch the rack tubing slightly to allow for the added width. I cannot see how this rack would "rattle" if installed properly. Over speed bumps and horrible Chicago roads, I've loaded it with at least 40 lbs and had zero problems.
Not Perfect
I just got this to replace a 30 year old rack that got bashed up. In the store it seemed light and the side rails were wide but accommodated the hooks for my panniers. The problem is that the vertical supports have too large a diameter close to the point of connection. The result is that round part of the rack tube comes up against the round bar of my seat stay so there is a large gap since the Allen screw can't bring the two pieces together. My bike is a fuji cross bike and I take the rack on and off a lot to do cross races, so while I left it on this time, I will probably take it back.
construction quality questionable
Put this on son's commuting bike last year and it is broken already. He put 25-30# book bag in side baskets attached to this rack. The baskets held up to the weight but not the rack. Vertical stay broke revealing interior rod (no wonder it is so heavy compared to my Blackburn rack). Inner rod has kept the rack in place, but it now wobbles around and makes putting weight in that side's basket unstable. I will replace this with another brand.
