Fabulous coat except...
I initially LOVED this coat, but then I began to notice that the zipper would unzip with the slightest bit of tension. If I stretched my arms back, I wore bulkier clothing underneath, or my purse put the slightest bit of tension on the coat, the zipper would slide down. I went back to REI to check the other Atom Hoodies. Every single one of the women's coats unzipped with minimal traction applied while the men's version held fast. Must be a zipper design flaw...bummer.
Superb all-round jacket
I've used this jacket about a month in a range of conditions; moderate, cold (30 degree), very windy or light rain and snow. I've been astonished how warm it is for it's slimness and light weight. It has become my go-to jacket for most circumstances and for travel. I originally bought it because it felt so great in the store - silky, yummy and yet technically capable. The side panels provide ventilation without letting the wind in. The knit cuffs haven't pilled, are long enough to pull over my knuckles, and stretch if I want to pull them up. I recommend this highly, one friend has already gone to get one for herself. I'd love additional color choices.
A good start!
This is a great jacket for a great price ($200 for an ArcTeryx jacket is very inexpensive). The fit is good. It's long enough that I don't get a draft when I sit down or bend over. The sleeves seem a tad long, but the cuffs are just tight enough that they don't slip down over my hands. I have been looking for a jacket like this for YEARS! I wanted something that I could wear alone or with a fleece underneath or also under a rain shell for extra warmth and that had a hood. The only thing I would like it to have are pit zips. It's just really nice to have some extra ventilation. This thing packs down to next to nothing (I can fit it into a medium sized handbag!) I would absolutely recommend this.
Best purchase I've made in a long while.
I live in NC where it doesn't get too cold, but we'll have temps in the 20s regularly, especially with this colder winter. I purchased this on an impulse and have been happy with it ever since. It's not too hot, but it's warm in very cold temps. It's super super lightweight and packs well. With a base layer and wool sweater, I can go out with the jacket in high teens and still feel toasty. In colder temps, like low teens and single digits, I treat it as a mid-layer and put on another coat. The hood makes all the difference in cranking up the warmth factor. I unexpectedly love the tapered sleeves for warmth and easy fit under another coat. It's stylish in an understated way. I can't say enough good things.
my new fav jacket
I have worn this jacket during my acclimatization hike on mt Orizaba in Mexico plus I wear it every day so far in the fall when it's a bit chilly.
AWESOME!
Feels like this jacket is tailored for me! (as does my other arcteryx shell- they make some great products!)- I'm slender and tall and amazed at the slimming fit with a torso and sleeves that are plenty long. It's very lightweight but so very warm. Also I love that the hood is NOT made to wear over a helmet-so I can wear this around town and not look goofy with some hugely oversized hood! Oh, and the bud color is great- I was a little unsure but in person it's not an obnoxiously loud color, it's feminine and fun! Buy it, you won't regret it!
Great Hoddie
I like this jacket a lot! I originally bought it as a light hoodie to wear when it was just a smidge cold, but I think it works best as a layering base jacket than just an everyday hoodie. It is not that warm when you wear it as the only layer. If you double up though- it is a great base. The material is great for windy days and easy for light camping as I can fold it up very small. The hood is hard to keep on if you're only wearing the jacket but stays put when under another hood. I do dock this jacket a little bit because it is already falling apart at the zipper with threads coming loose. I expect a lot from Arcteryx products so I am a bit disappointed I have it coming apart after only a few months with no heavy use. Overall though, I am still very happy with this. It is hard to get it dirty and I appreciate the banded wrist openings to prevent the cold from getting in. It also has a nice inside pocket. Very Pleased.
Wish it fit me!
I'm amazed that one of the reviews above said the sleeves were too long! I am 5'9" 130 lb. and the sleeves are too short on the medium and the largem and the shoulders are a bit narrow. If I chose the XL, I was absolutely swimming in the torso and bottom hem. Also, I find the arms on this jacket simply way too tight. When I bend my elbows, everything binds up. Girls do have muscles, you know, and their clothing needs to be big enough to let the arms expand and contract. I love the jacket, but I ended up with a Men's Small. Fits me perfectly, without all the extra chest darts for body parts that are not large enough to fill up that space, and the shoulders are wide enough for me, arms long enough, etc. Just wish there were more color choices in the men's version.
Great piece for bike commuting!
I use this coat nearly everyday on my bike rides around town and casual wear in late fall, winter and early spring. During the coldest months I layer this coat under a hard shell and I stay super warm. One of my favorite things about it is how packable it is. I live in Denver, where it's considerably warmer during the day than at night, so it's GREAT to be able to stuff this coat in my bag during the day and have it ready for my ride home at night. It might be a little too warm for long rides (more time for your body to heat up) but for 5 miles or less it's perfect. It's also incredibly comfortable and so far has held up to rough and frequent use. Because I love it so much, I bought the same product in a vest, too. Final note, it looks great and in is stylistically versatile in black.
Awesome Awesome Awesome
It's hard to find a jacket that fits a small frame so well while performing just as well. I've worn this thing around town when it's just chilly. It comes in super handy with the surprise light showers. It's also great while hiking in the mountains - often times I don't need another outer layer once I generate a little heat. It's soo light and scrunchable for the backpack. The tight sleeve openings keep the wind out nicely. One of my favorite purchases for sure. I wear the heck out of this!
