Simple and Easy to Install Rack Mount

I'm not sure if the other reviewer has his Birkenstocks on a little too tight but I found the Rail Grab simple and easy to install… and I'm a girl!!! Bought them from the local REI at their Anniversary Sale and put them on that afternoon. Can't get more simpler… single allen wrench is all you need[...]. Not sure what the running around is all about (maybe he can't read the tape measure) but I took my time and I spent about a half an hour and it was on and locked. No problems or issues so far and it's as steady as a rock… great product.

Note to Subaru Forester (2009-2011)

I've had Q-towers in the past; I've never been thrilled with the way they attach to the car. This rack isn't a huge improvement, but at least it is solid. Yakima shines from the bars up, but their towers seem to leave a lot to be desired. This particular set is solid, but potentially unforgiving with regards to improper adjustments. At any rate-- If you find the provided claws do not quite fit your car (in particular your Subaru Forester 2009-2011), you can call Yakima direct and they will send you their "medium" claws at no additional cost. No big deal if you're not in a hurry.

Typical solid Yakima product

I've had 3 yakima rack systems on various cars. First was Q towers, then Control Towers, and now the rail grab towers. Like all of them, this system is rock solid. It's easier to install and uninstall than the Q towers, but not as easy as the control towers. I LOVED that my control towers were on and off the landing pads in about 30 seconds. But my current vehicle (2014 subaru forester) required railgrabs, and I can't complain about anything. They're super solid, and I've always liked the looks of yakima racks. This is my first yakima system that had a lot of wind noise. I purchased a fairing last night, installed it, and the rack is nearly silent now. And my gas mileage appears to be back to "pre-rack" levels. Awesome!

Not For 2010 Subaru Forester

Not a good fit with the 2010 Subaru Forester factory rails. The small claw does not extend far enough, the large claw does not retract far enough. With the large claw the "claw" extends below the roof rail, so you have to rely on the curved portion above the claw for one of your contact points, (3 contact points recommended). Like the design and concept for the right rails, just don't bother with the Subaru factory rails...leave to Subaru to use a rail system that pushes hard to make you use their overprice accessories.

Quality Stuff

I bought this to retrofit my existing rack to my wife's Saturn Outlook and my 4Runner. The Rail Grab works easily for both vehicles. It is easy to install and very low profile. It's lockable and a very secure fit. The only negative I could find is that you can't remove the bars from the Rail Grab with the bar end plugs in place. I don't leave the rack on all the time and it would be nice to remove the bars from the Rail Grab when taking it off the truck. The bar end plugs cannot be removed easily without breaking. Overall, another quality product from Yakima!

Get the Thule Crossroads Instead!!!

This product sucks. First of all it is terribly difficult to install, requiring you to walk from side to side on the car to get it "just" right a thousand times. It is a total pain and is not secure. The bolt on the back is exposed so theoretically, despite the lock, someone could unscrew it and steal the whole wrack with your stuff on it. The Thule Crossroads has a solid rubber and steel strap that goes over the rails and secures in 5 minutes or less. This product I tinkered with for 2 hours and finally felt that it would never truly make me feel secure on the freeway ever. Don't do it. Sucks, sucks, sucks.

Built tough but a pain to assemble.

I've previously found Yakima products to be easy to install. This, though, was the most difficult to install Yakiima product I've ever used. Trying to get one side tightened down without the clamp/screw assembly coming apart on the opposite end...uggh. I'd get one side clamped down, only to find that the clamping bolt on the opposite side would no longer thread into its hole. So I'd need to go and loosen up the previous side, and try it on the 2nd side first, only to find the same problem has now appeared on the other end. Back and forth, back and forth. I was cussing and sweating by the time I was done. Thought it would be 15, 20 minutes tops. Took me about 45 minutes, some swearing, and two beers to get this thing on. Now that its on, it appears to be typical Yakima — secure and dependable.

Liar Liar for 2012 Audi A4 Avant

Yakima and all experts say this fits the 2012 Audi Avant Wagon with side rails...it clearly does not. I tried every clip and even considered modifying them. The grabber does not grip the Audi rail tight (you can lift off with a light bump.) It also sits so low that, even when on as tight as you can get it, the Audi's sunroof cannot operate properly without pushing on the crossbars. I had to return these and buy the Audi rack (similar to the new Whisper Bars) and will have to try to retrofit all my racks, boxes, etc. Yakima needs to delete the new Audi Avant Wagons from their fit lists/website. After playing with this for 2 hours, I think the old Lowrider (the Rail Grab predecessor)was a better product for raised factory racks (not flush rails).

I like it

I bought these a few weeks ago and just installed them for a planned canoe trip. I read the directions and had absolutely no problems with the installation. I tested them and they remained secure even if the claw adjust knob is removed. After a brief test drive I trusted them with my home built cedar strip canoe, they worked as advertised and kept my canoe very stable when the venturi winds of Weber Canyon caught me broadside. Loosen the claws and they come off the rack. I like the way they continue to grip the bar when removed which saves time when installing for the next trip.

Great mount for rails!

Owned a rack system with a set of Q towers years ago and while I loved my rack, didn't really like the way it attached. As the vehicle we have now has rails, this was the way to go and I like these attachments so much more. They were easy to install. Stable. No damage to the vehicle. I have flush siderails (meaning no opening underneath) and they work perfectly. I love that these are also the towers that are to be used if you have open siderails too. Gives me hope that we will just keep this system as is as we move from vehicle to vehicle. So far mounted a SkyBox 16S for a cross country trip with no issues at all and also pads for carrying stand up paddleboards. Very happy and very glad I went Yakima again!
