My favorite shoe
These are the best shoes I have ever worn. I am on my 3rd pair and just purchased 2 more pairs in different colors. I can wear these and walk all day, day after day and not have any pain in my feet, hips, back or knees. Any other shoe I have ever worn has caused problems with my body. I just recently went to Disneyland for 2 days in these shoes and had no issue at all. Every other show I have ever owned have started hurting my body after only a couple of hours of being on my feet. The only problem I have with them is they do STINK! My feet have never smelled so bad. I bought Dr. Scholl's foot spray and use every few times I wear the shoes and now they do not stink.
Fantastic!!
I bought a pair of these before I went on a month long tour of Israel and Egypt. I loved these! They were perfect from hiking up mountains, to going to the beach, to just walking around the countries! I normally hate wearing sport sandals but these I fell in love with. I will without a doubt buy another pair of these. Keen did a great job!
Nice Sandals
Newly bought and walk-tested. Plan on using with low-profile socks or some quick-dry foot coverings. though I love my Croc sandals, they cause perspiration (but cling well). I love my Sanuk's as well but they don't support and you'll "die" using them for long-range jaunts. I imagine the Keen's will not dry quickly but I'll test it. It's probably a keeper anyway. I don't usually buy 'spensive stuff, but I'm reaching out for quality and the Keen's have it! I'll write more when I test it in more situations... so far, VERY comfortable!
Recommend
I bought the Keen Newports for a trip to Spain. I logged a ton of miles over 10 days, primarily on sidewalks and streets (not trails). I'd guess I walked at least 8-10 miles most days (I love walking cities). Overall, they were great - plenty of support and pretty comfortable. A couple of negatives:- both of my achilles were sore after a few days; probably due to the heel strap- they are a little on the heavy side and on the hotter days, my feet were pretty darn hot. I know there is another version of these with lighter nylon straps instead of leather. They are probably better for hot days -- they were also considerably more expensive.- the shoes never stunk, but my feet would get a little ripe after a few hours. In summary, these sandals were a great value at $60ish (on sale). I don't know if I'd pay full price ($85ish).
Not so great in the long run
After several summers of use, they still fit well when I first put them on. There is little wear on the soles and on the upper materials, despite almost daily use during the past several springs, summers, and autumns. The BIG WEAKNESS is with the stretch straps. The pressure clamp fails to hold the tension in place. The elasticized strap slips through the clamp and loosens within an hour after putting them on. Re-tighten the straps and within an hour, you have to do it again. Why pay nearly $100.00 for a product that fails because of a part that probably costs the manufacturer $.25? If the manufacturer can't improve the durability/functionality of this simple aspect of the product, REI should drop Keen products. Unlike the local sport shop, REI has a responsibility to its members. Otherwise, I'm wholly satisfied with the product.
The only sandals for my husband...
These are great shoes. They have the breathability of sandals combined with the support of an athletic shoe. My husband will not wear any other sandals. The only problem he had...and maybe it just happens with any shoe that you wear without socks...is that they become stinky and you can't really clean the smell away. This is why he needs a new pair every summer. I guess that's normal? Otherwise, I love them, and will keep buying them.
5 years running
I have been wearing the same pair for nigh on 5 years now. For the most part I wear them daily; urban hiking, kayaking, desert hiking, mountain hiking. The ONLY problem I have had is that, now, the tightening cord is beginning to fray. They have been up and down and in and out with me and are the best sandals I have owned. They were comfortable the first time I tried them on and are still my shoes of choice.
Best sandals I ever had
I bought these sandals after tearing up some toes in Oak Creek Canyon. I liked the idea of have a wetable sandal that had toe protection. I have had the sandals for over a year now and wear them regularly. They appear to be durable. I wear them around town as well as outdoors, most recently tubing down the Guadalupe River. They provide great protection while climbing around wet rocks in the river.
Not so Keen on this sandal
NOT GOOD for wet locations or locations that have things like sand, pebbles, small sticks...pretty much anything outdoors. When wet they stay wet forever and feel slimey. When walking around the sand, pebbles and sticks get into this shoe but can't find a way out unless you take it off and shake it out. It's NOT a sandal, but rather a shoe with lots of openings for junk to get in.
Best trail sandals I have ever had
Being out here in Wilmington, NC and next to the ocean, I wear these almost everyday. If they get too knarly smelling, I can wash them in a machine washer and just go into the ocean. The salt water does not seem to hurt them to badly. They have really held up and I am now, after nearly three years, ready to get a new pair.
