After owning a 1060 for several years, I just purchased a 1050. The negative reviews had me a little concerned, so I decided to test both of my Pelicans. Submerged both in water for about 20 minutes. Both were absolutely dry inside. I think part of the bad results may be from dirty seals, or boxes that didn't have BOTH latches secured. Any "waterproof" design must have seals that are clean with no sand, dirt, or anything else that would cause a failure. I highly recommend these boxes.

Pelican Micro cases are not waterproof

If you search the Pelican 1050 case on the REI website. It comes up under the category of: "Paddling > Paddling Bags and Cases > Waterproof Cases" If you fail to click on the product "Details, Tab", REI states: Offering outstanding protection to your valuables, this case is water-resistant, dustproof and has an automatic pressure purge valve. In researching Pelicans website, they specifically state: Micro cases are not meant to be used while swimming and shouldn't be submerged. I feel that is easy to assume that the Pelican case is waterproof on the REI website. Sadly the case is not waterproof. Over the weekend my wife used the Pelican 1040 Micro case (smaller than the 1050 but same design) to store her smartphone. The case became submerged in a couple of inches of water. When she opened the case, she found water and her smart phone was ruined. Ouch!!! I will be returning the case to REI for a refund.

It's a pelican. Great for personals.

I use this to keep my phone (and phones of friends) while floating down the river. Lashed it to the tube. No water got it (not to say that it is waterproof, this was just my experience). I use it to lug around my hotspot for fieldwork. It's a pelican. What did you expect? The electric green is nice just in case it gets misplaced.

Didn't come close to delivering.

I was out this past weekend at the Narrows in Zion, and I put my wallet and two iPhones in this case. Wasn't overstuffed or difficult to close, and I'd used it before, but it'd never been submerged. This time it got dunked in some water for a split second and I left it in my bag. I went on hiking for several hours and when I finally got to the Visitor Center, I opened the case up, and inside is a thousand dollar set of paperweights completely soaked in water. WILL NEVER PURCHASE A PELICAN PRODUCT AGAIN.

Disappointed and in need of a new phone

Used this twice while paddle boarding. The carabiner broke off almost immediately and the supposed 'water tight' case did not keep water out. The specs on this state it can withstand up to one meter of water for half an hour. It was perhaps in 6 inches of water for less than a minute in Lake Tahoe. Now my phone is fried and I have a bad taste for a company I previously respected. What a joke this product is.

Great product

Bought this case primarily to store my camera while kayaking. It's a great product with a nice, tight seal, keeping everything inside dry. The bright yellow is a nice addition - if the case went overboard, it would be easy to spot in the water. The case was the perfect size, big enough to hold my Canon PowerShot SX130IS camera, cellphone, license, and chapstick will some room to spare.

Great for floating!

I bought this for simple floats on the river and it works great for holding car keys and even my phone. Hooks right onto tube or canoe and haven't had a single issue of anything getting wet, even when submerged in water during rapids.

One of the best things I have ever bought from REI

I'll usually work with a product for a few months up to a year before I write a review. No need to with this case. I can see on the tag that this case is only water resistant. So last night I filled up the kitchen sink to test it out. I put in a lot of change to weigh it down then stuffed it with shreds of paper and cotton balls. It just wanted to float so I weighed it down and left it for 10 hours. When I pulled it out in the morning everything inside was perfectly dry. So that gave me the confidence to take it with me tonight kayaking. I put in my smart phone, wallet, e-cig and keys. Then I just clipped it in and went out. I noticed some muskrats swimming around in the lily pads so I went over to watch. I forgot what I was doing and capsized. It took a little time getting back on my boat and the entire time this case was floating in the water. When I got back to shore I opened it up and everything was perfectly dry. I no longer know the difference between waterproof and water-resistant anymore. All I know is this little case kept all my stuff dry. I'm glad I bought it!

NOT WATER-PROOF!!!!!

This container is the perfect size for camping: fits a couple iPhones (6 & 6S), headlamp, tent-light, and some spare batteries. The rubberized insert makes a decent shock protection/padding for the contents... BUT IT'S NOT ACTUALLY WATERPROOF. After months of using it on back-packing trips, I took it sailing this weekend to keep my phone/wallet dry. Total failure. Two soggy ruined iPhones. There was not "moisture" inside; there was 2" of water inside a 2" deep container. And even worse, Pelican - as it turns out - does not have any guarantee on the CONTENTS of their cases - just replacement/refund of the defective case. In spite of Pelican advertising that these cases are submersible up to 1 meter depth for up to 30 minutes and IP67 rated containers, they're CLEARLY not even water resistant, let alone submersible. There are plenty of reviews confirming this. I wish I would have checked available reviews - or at least tested the container myself prior to using it. I HAD a high level of confidence in Pelican products based on previous experience and that this is advertised by REI as a product acceptable for water sports. Here's my advice: - Great case for simple organization with MILD (at best) moisture resistance inside your pack - but for that function, you can probably find cheaper alternatives! - Test the case before you submerge it with anything valuable in it. Put some tissues inside the case, submerge it for a while, see if the tissues are wet. I'm willing to bet they'll be wet. Return for full refund. - Just don't buy it.
