Great features: -Roomy -Tons of pockets (there are even some on the outside) -Easy to setup -The rainfly is so cool. You can roll up one or both of the sides...I've never seen this on a tent before. (see the pictures) -Two doors, they attach at the top, so you can unzip from either side and there is a pocket above them to stuff the doors into if you want them open. -Vestibule, do yourself a favor and buy the optional vestibule for the other side, it's awesome. -The carrying case. Keeps everything nicely organized and it's easy to get the tent into it. The not so good: -Only one vestibule, as I said above, buy the optional one. -It's heavy, you'll only want to use it for car camping
This is a great tent for family camping out of a car. It's roomy, has lots of headroom and easy to set up (it took two adults to set up/one to disassemble). The rainfly got a tear in it after one night but REI quickly replaced the entire tent (great customer service!!). I loved all the storage for keys, headlamps, and maps and the placement of mesh was just right for outside visibility, but enough for privacy. The rainfly kept us dry through a severe thunderstorm--no leaks through the floor either. We purchased the footprint to protect the flooring and will probably purchase the additional vestibule in the future. Very happy with our purchase!!!!
I purchased this tent for an annual trip with college buddies since we had an additional person coming and we needed more space. First and foremost - I feel this tent is excellent in nearly every respect. The shape, design, interior space, windows, pockets, dividing wall, zippers, and doors were all well placed, well designed and well thought out. That makes the one "con" that much more annoying - the rainfly. The "additional" vestibule (and $80 purchase) is a necessity for any rain beyond a light sprinkle, as the rear door is almost totally exposed due to the design of the fly. After 2 days of near constant, heavy rain, there was significant moisture building up in the tent and accumulating on the foot print (under the body). Other than this, the tent is excellent and if you're not worried about the weather or you don't mind dropping another $80 and carrying more stuff, this tent won't steer you wrong.
I just returned home from 5 days wilderness camping near Panaca, NV. We camped off Hwy 319 at 6,600'. I arrived on Friday afternoon, Oct 2nd. Got my tent setup (easily by myself, 56yr old woman) and got camp made before the rain started. It rained heavily off & on everyday and night. Even 3/4" hail and hard winds. It withstood it all. I got water under the floor only because I didn't dig the trench correctly against the back wall. Yes, there is no vestibule on the back door but I had no problem with water coming in. I camp alone so I have more than enough room with this tent. It is very easy to set up. The storage backpack is great.
We had to return this tent twice. First time the seam on one of the hooks that attached the tent to the pole broke. It really is tight especially when you've got the inside room divider folded up. The second time we had two tent poles break. We could have kept repairing them but decided it wasn't worth it. We went camping about every other weekend this summer but still. The fly was great and it was totally waterproof. I'd say this is a good tent if you aren't going to use it that often. Otherwise you might risk similar breakage. And it was put together correctly. We're going to try a cheaper Kelty and hope it's just more durable.
Spent a weekend in Franconia Notch as a first trip with this tent recently. And after two rounds of violent thunderstorms and torrential rain, my Kingdom 4 fared extremely well.My only (very small) complaint: The fly design does not offer a full tapered cover all the way to the ground at each end.During the really heavy rains, the end of the tent without a full cover had some slight "pooling" along the zipper backing (see photo attached to this review). And since the fly does not extend to the ground, you must keep the screen closed, whereas the screen on the other end can remain open (and mine did) throughout the worst of storm. And we had a very tiny amount of blowing rain make it into the tent between the fly and top screen mesh too. Again, very slight, but would be blocked if the fly were the same on each end. (see photo attached to this review)I'm considering adding the vestibule to safeguard against both of these issues in the future (just not pleased to be considering another $100).I can't emphasize enough though that this tent was AMAZING given the circumstances. We did not get wet at all. We had over 1.5" of rain over one night and these are very slight issues. So close to perfect REI. Nice job.
I have always been impressed with REI tents and this was no exception. My wife and I just finished a week long camping trip at a festival in western NY and found this tent to be just what we needed. In the past, we have used the Taj 3 to sleep in and an old Mountain Convert 2 for our gear. This tent was great, very roomy, easy to set up and was water tight when it rained. The extra vesibule was a great addition. The low-to-the-ground camp chairs were very comfortable in the additional vesibule. The ventilation was awesome in this tent. We were actually able to nap during the day which we have not been able to do before. The zippers on the round entrance doors did snag a bit, but that is very minor. I look forward to more time in the tent.
My wife and I are used to backpacking and have enjoyed our REI half dome for almost 8 years now. We have recently become car campers with our son who is 2 yo. We have used the tent twice, once along the columbia river and once along the OR coast. Both times we had strong to severe winds. The tent held up very strong in the winds. The tent is comfortable and for three people and a lab dog it has more than enough space. You could easily sleep 5 comfortably. We also purchased the additional vestibule and really think its worth it.
I spent a lot of time looking at the reviews for this tent. The difficult part about choosing a tent is determining how large it is. The measurements provided are useful, but until the tent is setup, it's hard to visualize how much usable space is available. The staff at REI is very helpful and will help you assemble any of their tents in the store. Doing this is beneficial because you can see how the tent actually looks and how to assemble it properly. I was on the fence between the Kingdom 4, the Hobbitat 4 and the Big Agnes Big House 4. Based on the dimensions, the Big House is supposed to be larger, and it costs less. Even though the Big House and Hobbitat should be larger than the Kingdom 4, after setting them up in the store, I discovered that the Kingdom 4 provided more useable space and was significantly easier to assemble - so I went with the Kingdom. About me: I am 6'4" and have a fiance and a labrador that camp with me. We car camp, but we go to the walk-in campsites in the North Georgia Mountains. So we end up carrying the gear anywhere from 150 feet to a quarter mile over hilly terrain. This tent comes in backpack. This is very nice because it allows you to carry it on your back while carrying other things with your arms. Some of the other 4 person tents just have handles, so you must carry them like other pieces of gear. The backpack design helps save a trip back and forth between the car and campsite. Size: I mentioned how tall I am to illustrate one of the reasons we chose this tent. I don't care about being able to stand up in the tent (almost no tents allow me to fully stand up) but when I lay down, I want to make sure I don't touch any of the sides. That way, I can avoid getting wet from condensation. I am able to lay down without touching any of the sides of this tent. As you will see in the photos, we put the sleeping bags in one of the rooms and put the gear and the dog in the other. We also stacked two 20 gallon totes, a cooler and our lawn chairs in one of the rooms of the tent to provide a frame of reference, so you can see just how large the space actually is. Moisture/Wind: The tent comes with the seams already sealed, which is nice. It is large enough and has enough ventilation to help limit the condensation that can sometimes build up inside smaller tents. This was the most surprising part for me. I grew up sleeping in small two-person pup tents. I always woke up with wet feet and a wet pillow from the moisture that condenses inside the tent. With the Kingdom, there is so much ventilation that no moisture ever condensed along the walls for us. We've used it on a night where there were 20+ mph winds. I forgot to setup the guy lines, but the tent was still rock solid. It was windy all night and nothing had come loose when we checked the next morning. Ease of setup/take down: The tent is fairly easy to setup. I probably had an advantage since I an REI staff member helped me do it at the store before I bought it. Nonetheless, setting up the tent only takes about 10 minutes with two people. It would be difficult to do alone, but that's probably not much of a concern because I doubt many solo campers would purchase a 4 person car-camping tent. Another nice thing: once you take the tent down, it actually fits back into the backpack easily. Some of the tents we saw did not go back into their cases without careful folding and a lot of finesse. We just folded the Kingdom up as best we could and it fit into the backpack with room to spare. Durability: The metal poles are durable and don't feel flimsy. The zippers work well with one hand and don't get stuck around corners. I am generally pretty careful with the things I have, but my dog is not. She consistently ran into the sides and pushed up against the door and room dividers with no consequence. I haven't had the tent for very long, but I imagine it will last a long time. The bottom line is that I believe car-campers would be very happy with this tent. I do a lot of research when I purchase things, and this tent seems to be the best choice for 4 person car-camping.
I travel to Baja Sur Very Windy of shore Conditions ant this REI 4 KIngdome whas very good on Lite Rain and confort inside, a lot of pockets for storage I will buy again. I use to have some comercial brands Tents but this one is a lot of good diference very nice ventilation at nigth you can pack again in the same bag.
