So I didn't actually buy this 2013 model. I have purchased 3 of these in the past and loved them. Great tent, great size, great price. I was just going to buy another one but they changed it. You can now see in the picture that the interior door is half screen with NO solid door flap to cover the screened section. REI I hope you are reading these reviews. What crazy person removed the option to cover the door? This tent is very breezy without that screen door cover. You have to close it up tight on cold nights or freeze. When it's hot, I often rolled up the vestibules and use the interior door flap for piracy. That was a GREAT design. Please put the close-able door back so I can buy a new tent next year.
Used this tent for the first time - 26 days/nights in the Eastern Sierras. Snowed on twice - this tent handled 1.5 inches just fine. The tent did not budge in some fairly high winds. This is the 3rd tent I have tried - no comparison to other brands. I had lots of zipper problems - the Camp 4 zippers operate smoothly with one hand!!!!!!!!!!! Very pleased with the overall quality of this tent....
Large sturdy tent. Great for car camping. I got hit with a snow storm while in Sequoia, wet heavy snow. I didn't notice any condensation and there was just slight sagging on top of the vestibule (guy out tighter and this probably wouldn't have happened). Other tents in the area were ready to topple over. Only con is it takes a while to set up/break down (the reason for 4 star). Great tent overall!
I love this tent. This has been my car camping trip for all of my big summer trips so far...a week in Yellowstone, long weekend in Olympic National Park as well as a few short trips out to Eastern Oregon as well as Mt. Hood. It is definitely a squeeze with 3 people and a dog, I would not say that it is not a 4 person tent. We can fit 3 of us sleeping on backpacking pads, or 2 of us and a queen sized blow up mattress. I really like it because I can stand up in it, which makes getting dressed and packing things so much easlier. Pros... Sturdy tent, even in 20+ mph gusts it stayed put. Has also held up to the dog trying to jump out through the front door a few times. Easy to set up. The pole design is so, so, so easy. We can put it up in the dark with 2 people in less then 5 minutes. Staking it out with the vestibules is a little complicated, only because you have to figure out which way you want to open the front door and then get the propert amount of taughtness. Warm for winter camping, but since I live in a cooler climate we hardly ever came in warm temperatures. Not so great for summer camping. Waterproof. We had it in pouring/dousing rain while camping in the Olympics, and we stayed perfectly dry. Tons of storage in the tent. There is little cubbies, tuck pockets for the door, and even an attic that comes in super handy. Huge vestibule. I can fit a camping chair in there, sit and and read when it's pouring! We usually store our chairs under there when we are gone, and we can easilly fit 5 folded chairs in the front vestibule and 3 in the back. Really great tie up options for all of the doors. Really easy to secure the fly door as well as the tent door. Lets in some much needed fresh air. Even while it's raining, we usually leave the fly door open and we still stay dry. Storage is so simple and easy. We just fold it in thirds and then roll it, and it fits with plenty of room in its backapack. I also have a waterproof compression sack for wetter weather, and I can fit the entire thing in a 20L sack. Cons: Tends to gather condensation on the inside of the fly. Even with the vents, it is noticeably wet and everytime that I crawl out, my back gets wet as wet. HOT in the summer time with the fly on. We camped in Yellowstone in an open field, and even though the ambient temperature was in the 60s, it was well into the 80's in the tent. You can't really go without the fly because it is see through. No privacy. The tent is pretty much all mesh, and the fly has these 2 giant see through plastic windows. We woke up to a toddler looking through the window a few times in Yellowstone. I absolutely love this tent. It is everything that I was looking for in a home away from home. And so far, it has held up incredibly well - can't wait for many more great camping seasons with it.
We are a camping family and love to hike and camp in the backcountry, but our kids are only ages 2 and 3 so we are trying to ease them into the lifestyle. Last year we went on our first camping trip and they loved it but we decided our two person tent would be too cramped for this year's trip. We did heavy research for several months and decided on this tent. We set it up in our living room as a test run and were impressed with how easily it set up (within 5 minutes) and how roomy it was. At the campsite (Etowah River in Dahlonega, GA) it took about 10 minutes of set up time with the ties and attaching the rain fly. Spacious yet cozy - it wasn't claustrophobic, but it wasn't so huge that we were cold at night either. With the rainfly on, our large dog (45 lbs.) was able to sleep in the vestibule comfortably. The kids didn't want to leave it and we were all sad when it was time to pack up and go home! This is the second tent we've purchased from REI brand and I don't think we'll ever purchase any other label! Great value and quality!
We had planned another trip kayaking and camping around the Nantahala, and decided a bigger tent would be easier on us then the backpacking 2 person we have. We arrived at our campsite around 9pm and set the tent up in the dark like usual. I was a little worried about the difficulty we may have because we've never set it up before and it was twice as big as our other little tent. We had no trouble what so ever setting it up and about 10-15 minutes later we had outself a tent! It did rain after the setup and I will say everything was dry and still standing! The temps were low in the evening (around 45-50 degrees) and it was a bit chilly in the tent. The fly is designed in such a way that it allows a lot of air through. It would be great during the warm night, but not so much in the winter. We are planning to place something over the doors just to keep the draft out in October. There was TONS of space in the tent and we had plenty of room for the queen size mattress we had. we aren't very big people but we had enough room to change our clothes and store out bags.
We got this for a river trip and thankful we did! The trip was rainy and cold, with just two of us in this tent there was more than enough room for us and our gear with nothing pressing against the sides. Almost stand-up head room made it easy to get dressed in the am and the large front vestibule was great! Ventilation worked well; we set-up and broke camp in the rain, but the ventilation dried out the inside of the tent well before bed time. Wet gear dried nicely in the attic overnight. It can be difficult to get the poles out of the sleeves, especially in the rain. Did notice some flaws in the screen stitching, but doesn't seem to be a problem.
Have had this tent a couple years now and has been pitched in most weather conditions (except snow), LOVE it! it has held up well to moderate wind conditions and last weekend my family and I stayed dry while most others in camp were soaked, the rainfly does its job, and as long as your trenches hold around the base you'll stay dry!! its a true 3 season tent and sleeps this family of 4 comfortably.
We went camping with 2 kids and 2 adults in this tent, it was very roomy and comfortable. It withstood 4 hrs of heavy rain without any leaks. We had it once set up on platform and once on ground using stakes and both times it was very easy and sturdy. It has enough height to put on your pants standing up but it is not too big to take to mach space in your trunk. Especially I love the extra room in the entrance. It has 2 but one has it's own pole so you can actually stand in there, while it is raining and take of your coat and boots without bringing the mud in to the tent. The only slight issue is that it is hard to make the rain fly tight so it does not touch the inner tent. even though it has handy dandy Velcro at poles crossings still it took a while to get it right.
So far!.. Great tent, only item I've added to this tent is larger stakes. Due mainly to me setting up this tent on Gravel/Sandbars on river banks and the smaller stakes kept pulling out.. As for camping conditions: I've been in fairly high wind "35kts" with absolutely no issues. Camped below freezing with no condensation and, been in heavy rains with no leaks.. My only complaints would be that it's a little heavy and perhaps somewhat more difficult to setup then some of my buddies. But then again, it's not made for backpacking and, when it is setup; it can rain or blow all it wants, you'll be dry and tight.
