This is a jacket.
Oh, my word! This jacket feels like a jacket! It looks like one, too. That is because, it is one! If you need a jacket, buy this. There are, also, cheaper jackets available in numerous quantities anywhere. I bought this to satisfy my emotional need for validation, and it's sort of sufficiently accomplishing the job. This is totally the jacket to use should one choose to look sporty and keep it real with other sporty people, without actually partaking on the part. Have you ever read any of the literatures written by Boethius? I haven't, but now I can talk like I have because of this jacket!

Sizing guide is inaccurate, fit is huge
Ordered online and just got it in the mail today, the fit is totally inaccurate. I had to double-check the size (medium), and then came here again to double-check the size chart (I am on the bigger end of a medium recommendation) to make sure I didn't somehow miss something obvious... I suppose it is remotely conceivable my tag was mislabeled but how likely is that? This may help others ordering online so here's the situation: I am 6'3 with an athletic/slim build, I wear a size 40-42 jacket and have a 32-34 waist depending on brand. Accordingly, I ordered a size medium (I was actually concerned this would be too small, LOL!) which they claim is for 39-41 chest and 31-33 waist. Well, it arrived and the "Medium" is basically an XL fit for about a 50" chest or a 56" gut - yes it is that "generous". Sure it has some cinch cords on the side to tighten up the waist, but all that does is tighten the very bottom while puffing out the hugely roomy boxy chest and gut region, which basically makes you look like a brightly colored Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. The abnormally roomy sizing is completely unique to this jacket, I have other 'regular' fit Patagonia gear in size medium and it's actually a bit too tight, and I have 'slim' fit Patagonia gear in large and it's perfectly snug. I do not recommend buying this without trying it on in a store. The arm length prevents ordering a size (or two) smaller than usual. Maybe Patagonia will at least follow their own size chart in the future?

Warm and Versatile

I have two of these "sweaters". One I wear on camping trips the other for around town. While camping I wear under a shell. The only downside to these jackets is that they are fairly fragile - thus a shell. It's not water resistant (at all) and is not advertised as such also not very wind resistant - once again the shell fixes that. With a base layer underneath and a shell over the top this jacket is good down to 0 if you're active and about 30 if you're just hanging out. My "dress" version is great for around town adventures unless it's raining - then I just don't wear it. I'm 5'8", 170, reasonably fit - I wear a medium and it fits perfect.

Awesome! Will be your "GO TO" jacket

I have only had this for 3 weeks but have hunted with it (put on as an inside layer after I got to my deer stand), hiked with it, and just have been wearing it around town. It is super light, but noticeably warm for how thin and light it is. I have also noticed it to be warmer than fleece. Perfect to wear daily here in Minnesota except for the couple of weeks it gets really cold. Then you would probably need something warmer. Overall, I can see why this jacket has a lot of good reviews, it just seems to keep you warm but not sweaty even when its above 30. I would like to see them make a down pant with this thin design, that would be awesome too!

Great jacket for layering!

I got this jacket as a gift and at the time I was a bit turned off by the look but decided to use it as one of my layers on Kili anyway. The weight and packability of this made it an excellent mid-layer and it really won me over on summit day. The jacket fit easily over my fleece and under my coat and weighs next to nothing. Now that I'm back in the city, I find myself reaching for this jacket a lot. I find that it's perfect for the cool days we've been having here in Seattle and it saves me from bringing out my heavy coats. I'm still not a fan of the look but this jacket fills a niche in my outwear that I didn't know I had.

Slim fit, right 3 seasons belay jacket

I just finished plugging the holes in mine with repair tape (Tenacious variety), so there you go one con: while indeed ripstop it still is fragile enough to be kept well away from any ice tool, screws, etc. Use it while belaying or in camp only, also because it's practically not breathable at all. Finally, it's waterproof for about five minutes and then it quickly goes down to sopping wet and zero insulation. One downpour taught me to carry it in a compression dry bag and treat it like the ultimate survival item. Evertything else it's been said here about fit, warmth and lightness is very true and hence I still highly recommend it. Experience: used two over two years, lost one in a crevasse, took the other on several summits and ice climbing routes.

light, warm, I wear it half the year

I bought this jacket over 2 years ago and I wear it a lot. I live in the mountains and winter is already here by mid October and can stick around into June. It packs up to the size of a grapefruit, so it is perfect for taking on planes, or keeping it in the car. The one bad thing, it rips way too easily. I knew it wasn't bullet proof so I don't abuse it (no cats or dogs are allowed near it). I made the mistake of taking it through sagebrush once. It never ripped that bad, the ripstop does work. Patagonia replaced this jacket a year ago because of holes. A month later it had holes.... hopefully they replace it again.

Great Lightweight And Warm Jacket

I recently bought this jacket to take with me on an early Fall trip to the Wind River Range in Wyoming. I wanted something very lightweight, yet at the same time something that would keep me warm. I was initially concerned about how light this jacket was and if in fact it would keep me warm if it got really cold. Well, we had two days of intermittent snow, and night time temps for the entire week long trip was in the 20's & 30's. The jacket more than met my expectations for the trip and was in deed very warm. Just make sure you have a good outer shell to put on over the jacket in case you get rain or wet snow. Overall I was very impressed with how the jacket held up.

awesome jacket

It's been in the 20's here in my town for a few weeks now, and I find this jacket with a sweater underneath is perfect for getting around town. I usually wear some kind of layer underneath it, like a polar fleece (Kuhl are my favorite). And this jacket on top keeps me very cozy. The layer underneath is pretty important, because the down compresses so easily that if you lean against something, or rest your elbow on something cold, you'll feel it. That comopressability is, of course, the beauty of down. I'm looking forward to taking this on hikes, too. But it's really nice and non-bulky around town. Great when you're getting in and out of the car, etc. You don't feel like the michelin man...

Almost Perfect

Great garment. Adds instant warmth the minute you put it on. I used this piece as my main insulating midlayer on an extended elk hunt in Montana. Average temp was -10f each day. I wore the REI airflyte hoodie as my base layer, coupled with a heaveyweight Power Dry zip neck. Then the down sweater and finally a wool pendleton button up shirt as the final outter layer (my goretex parka was overkill and did not breath enough during our extreme uphill hikes in a foot of snow). I was never cold. Now I wear it as an outer layer to and from work and around town. Goes from technical to around town extremely well.
