Perfect fit
I wear these pants any time I go hiking or backpacking. They dry fast and are a great fit. I also wear them around the house, but the material's too lightweight to look any more than casual. Being long-waisted, I find the relatively high waist is comfortable because it doesn't give me wedgies. When hiking, I always wear the pants long, velcroed close, and tucked into my socks to protect against the ubiquitous ticks. Then I unzip the thighs halfway to provide plenty of air circulation. It's very practical and comfortable. I love my first pair so much I'm getting a second! They do run about a size smaller than you'd expect.
Could have been a bit better...
I wore these for a week-long back country trip to Glacier National Park. They fit okay - I had to go a size up from what I normally purchase. They were a little tight through the hips, which somewhat restricted movement at first. They fit a little higher on the waist than I would have liked. They did stretch after a few days and I had to keep tightening the belt (they actually felt better after a few days on trail, though). On the positive side, they dried VERY quickly. They also kept my legs warm at night when it got cold. I wish they had fit in the beginning like they fit after a few days of wear.
Worked Great in Africa!
We just got back from Sudan this summer and really enjoyed these pants. Our team all purchased REI convertible pants for the journey due to the extreme heat(over 100 daily)and enjoyed the light weight material. Pants are comfortable and easy to move in. We were working in a harsh environment and the pants held up well. Having the right gear can make a big difference in the trip and these were a good match for our needs. I have continued to wear them since our return and like to throw them in my travel bag. They are very light weight and compress down very small when packed to go.
Return to Last Year's Design, Please
I have four pair of LAST YEAR's design of the REI Sahara pants. I do not like this year's pocket layout design or the lower waistline. These pants are not about style, they are about making life practical for hikers and travelers. If REI returns to LAST YEAR's design, I will buy some more pants. If not, I guess I'll have to start looking elsewhere. If necessary, make two lines of Sahara pants, one for folks who focus on style and appearance and one line for those of us who like to be comfortable, practical and utilitarian. Thanks much.
Great Pants!!!!
k, So I took these camping last weekend (3 day 2 night at the Olympic Penninsula -Sol duc) and they were the only pants I needed. They were very comfortable and fit me right in the waist as well as in the thigh (usually have a problem there). The zip off pant legs were easy to get off AND on. The only thing was at night and early morning I had to wear some silk long underwear to stay warm, but they were perfect the rest of the day and I really enjoyed them and the way they fit.
Great Pockets
I take these pants to China every year. They could dry faster if they were lighter weight. Maybe two weights would be a good idea. The velcro bottoms could work better to make capri pants and also help in Chinese toilets. The colors are okay but black would be nice too. They have the best security pocket out there. It makes a purse unnecessary and that can only be a good thing.
Great for walkin' the hounds
These are probably most suited for casual - i.e. non-heavy-duty wear - usage such as walking the aforementioned greyhounds. If they slobber water all over you, your pants will at least dry quickly! I will probably never remove the legs and wear the shorts version as that is rather 'short' indeed - I would never be able to sit down gracefully. But if it were hot enough, who knows...
In the Wilderness with my pants down!!
I was two days into an 8 day backpack in the Frank Church Wilderness with a new pair of pants and the zipper broke - completely. I spent the next 6 days with a pair of pants safety-pinned on one leg. The pins would pop out with any kind of deep bending (like to pick up my pack) and of course the hole let in all the bugs and brush. Nice pants, but get some better hardware!
High in the waist!
These pants are comfortable and really good for any outdoor activity and hiking, I really like the material and colors. However I had to go up one size from what I normally wear. Additionally, my main complaint is the waist line…it’s too high! It would be great and even more comfortable and attractive to have this style of pants with a lower waist line.
Excellent Fit
I tried on several different brands and these were the only convertible pants that fit me like a glove. (No gapping in the back, plenty of room in the thighs.) Great for hiking, canoeing, and fishing. The pant legs zip on and off easily. The fit is true to size and the "tall" length was perfect. I bought a pair in both colors.
