Practical for light activities only!

Firstly, I own a pair of these pants I bought about five years ago and I loved them up until a cactus ripping accident, and had to replace them. Boy was I disappointed! REI's quality in these pants seems to have diminished :( I had a size 6 petite in the old pair, and my new pair barely fit in a 10 petite. Their sizing has obviously changed too. The material is lightweight and breathable, but is not very durable. After wearing for two days the left leg zipper jammed. That afternoon, the knee split open, along with a few small rips in the butt area. They are NOT for active people. Try other brands for a more durable option.

Chilly to hot and back again and again.

I've worn these to hike Old Rag Mountain on a day when the morning started out chilly and blustery, and mid-day temperatures reached the nineties at the summit. The easy zip-off legs made it very quick to adjust my clothing to suit the conditions. Zipped off, the pant legs are lightweight and fit in my pockets. These pants are the most versatile piece in my hiking/camping wardrobe. The comfortable fabric dries quickly and resists soiling. Many of my friends have purchased these pants now and the verdict is unanimous -- Thank you REI!

Extra benefits after knee surgery

Fortunately, I already had a pair of these pants before knee surgery. Now, with a full length, hinged at the knee leg brace, it's all I can wear. The pants are nice enough for the office and with the cuff to knee zipper, allows access to the hinge. And, when I go to Physical Therapy (PT), I just zip off the legs and I'm in my shorts! An added benefit at PT was to zip one leg back on while the other was in ice. I just purchased two more pair to get me through the next month. It's my favorite pair of camping pants.

No Way, Man!

I'm very sorry to say these pants literally fell apart. Within 3 hours, the croch seem ripped. (I had a sewing kit, thank God, so I fixed them. )Then the leg zipper broke the next day and finally the butt seam ripped clear open. OY OY OY. I was out for 7 days hiking in Wyoming through deserts and across glaciers and they literally fell apart. I had a pair of long undewear with me, otherwise I would have been mooning the world. Butttt, I got to take them back! So, I'm still a happy, very loyal customer!!! :-)))

Finally, petite sizes!

I love the fit of these pants. I'm glad REI is expanding their sizes. The problem with these pants is there are very few petite size 2. I've tried two REI stores and they don't even have it online either. I was only able to snag one pair :-( I've climbed and hike in these pants. I love the freedom of movement around the thigh area when I have to bring my leg up high on certain climbs. I can wear my thermals under these during colder weather and it's fits nicely. I'm taking them to Aconcagua with me.

Reliable and well-fitting pants

I tried on many pants [...], but these were one of few that were <$100 that fit my tall, slightly boyish frame well. Other pants were way too loose over my hips and thighs. When the pant legs are (easily) removed, the shorts are still functionally long, so that brambles don't scrape the sensitive thigh flesh. I have used these pants all summer in thick woods, on mountain sides, in rain and sun, and I'm impressed by their comfort and ease of convertibility, and their good looks.

Love these pants

I got these pants for my birthday last year and have worn them for all of my backpacking and camping trips over the summer. They've held up extremely well and are so comfortable! I love the versatility - and all the pockets. I am a pocket freak. I hate carrying purses/bags/fanny packs, and I am always able to fit everything I need into all the cool pockets on these pants. I do wish they were a little more flattering, but they're not bad for how comfy they are.

Great Pants!

I use these pants from spring to fall hiking. They work great because it's like having three pants in one. You can roll them up to have capris pants, zip off the legs for shorts or just wear it all and have pants. They are stylish, meaning that they don't go above your belly button like most other hiking pants out there. Also, they wash well, I have the khaki colored pair and all dirty spots wash out every time.

comfortable and durable

Great pants to do rough stuff in. I've gone through many bushes and climbed many things, often on my knees and not in great style, but I am yet to see significant signs of wear and it's been 3 or 4 years at least. The fit is great to allow freedom of movement, therefore they're kind of baggy and probably not the most flattering pants I have, but they're great for all the outdoor stuff.

good pants

The pants are great for traveling since they wash easily and dry quickly. They don't stain and are roomy and comfortable. With thermals, they are also good for cooler weather since they are somewhat wind resistant, but they are also great for hot weather because they are thin and breathable. The only thing I would like is if REI could make the same pant that is NOT convertible.
