Great Crampons

These crampons work great on glaciers and alpine routes. They're especially good for ski mountaineering. I can use these on my mountaineering boots for a mixed approach, then strap them on my ski boots for the final climb up a couloir. The strap system is very secure and holds to a wide variety of footwear. They're light and unobtrusive on the pack, and even while wearing alpine ski boots and these crampons I didn't notice the weight on my feet while climbing up 50 degree couloirs. Add these to a good pair of AT skis with skins, and you've got the perfect quiver for getting up anything you'd want to ski down.

great on the flats but not the vert

if you need a crampon for trotting across your average slope in your backpacking boots and don't want to fork over a grip of cash...give these a go...if you're going to be doing much front pointing or anything semi-technical look elsewhere though 10 point contact is great for general glacier travel on mild slopes and the dual strap is nice for a range of footwear...if that’s you, buy'em...if you want something that will do that and allow you tackle more challenging terrain look at a G12 or similar

Worked for me

These were some great first time crampons for me, easy on/off was great for the Mt Adams summit I did this weekend that required me to switch back and forth due to poor snow cover between the glaciers. Also a plus was the nice lightweight- I'm not a weight freak, but I must say it was swell to not notice the metal spikes on my feet when I was sucking wind at 12,000'. Only reason I didn't give em 5 stars is the lack of an included bag, you can't have it all.

Gets the job done on soft boots

Used these on Lassen last weekend on my snowboard boots and they worked flawlessly. Had grip on all surfaces, and they act as a shank to stiffen your soft boots. Was my first time in crampons but had n o complaints - didn't notice them while they were on, and they were light and small enough to be unobtrusive when on my pack - just strapped them on on top of my snowboard. Only thing that would make them perfect is if they came with a bag.

Very solid crampon

This crampon works pretty well with most decent hiking or backpacking boots. As long as you have them adjusted properly and don't push the limits of this crampon too much you will not be disappointed. I've done some moderate/steep snow climbs as well as some mixed routes and haven't been disappointed. Make sure that the sole on your boots have decent rigidity if you are going to tackle steep slopes. I've never been disappointed with any Black Diamond product. To the reviewer below who said that their crampons were falling off a plastic climbing boot on a steep colouir. You didn't adjust the frame of the crampons to the size of your boot before you left. That is a big no-no. On these crampons there is a plate underneath that allows you to properly size the crampons to your footwear. You should always check your crampon fit to your boots before every trip. What were you thinking?

My First Pair

I bought these after falling on an icy trail last year. I used these for the first time yesterday and they worked great. I have never worn crampons before and these were easy to put on and use. They kept me on the trail for several miles until I got to the point where I really could have used a pair of snowshoes. Great for the winter trail in ice and packed snow.

kept falling off

I borrowed a pair from my partner when I climbed Matterhorn Peak in California last Spring on my Raichle Mountaineering boots. It may be because my boots are semi-flexible or the rear welt on my boot is too high, but these things kept falling off. This was not fun when going up a steep couloir in 2 foot deep snow, and you see your crampon dangling off the toe of your boot. "There goes one crampon. Oops there goes the other. I wonder if I'm going to die today." Despite the anti-bot, snow kept balling up under my boot. My partner had some old leather and steel crampons and had no problems. Each time I had to put them back on, we checked to make sure they were strapped correctly, but they ended up falling off after awhile each time. Everyone else seems to love these, so they may just be incompatible with my boots. I would highly recommend not borrowing or buying these without testing them with the boots you will be wearing them on.

lightweight

I used this item for my trip to Ecuador for technical and non technical climbs. They were perfect for the trip as they are compact, lightweight and easy to travel with. Although they've had a lot of use, the points are still sharp. The only downside is that since the points are very sharp, you need to watch out for your pants and gaiters!!

Nice piece of equip

Overall a nice product. Very quick and easy to put on and get adjusted, straps stay tight all day. Feet a little sore after hiking all day in them up in the high peaks, climbing frozen creeks, but that is to be expected. Great grip on the ice. Obviously no vertical with them. Had to get the extender bar for a size 13 boot.

Good general crampons

Good for glaciers and climbing non-vertical ice. Good 1st pair of crampons - also since they are strap on they go onto regular hiking boots. Just make sure your hiking boots are mid-weight or higher b/c your crampons will come off from boots that flex as much as light hiking boots. Could come with a bag at this price.
