Love this beanie for cold weather biking

I use this beanie under my bike helmet for cold weather riding, in the temperature range from 25 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit. In really cold weather I put a cover on my helmet and this beanie underneath. This beanie pulls down under my ears and stays put, keeping my ears warm and comfy thru chilly commutes and recreational rides. I always keep this beanie with me, and it hasn't failed me in the least. Where other beanies have disappointed me by rolling up on my head as I ride and allowing my ears to chill, this great beanie stays put. I also feel like this comfy beanie helps give my head a little extra cushioning from the helmet edges and usually wear this beanie way past the need for just warmth!

Extremely Small, but Great Quality

I purchased this hat because I loved the plain design. When it arrived the wool was great quality too. However, the hat is extremely small and does not fit me well. I felt the need to leave a review to warn others. Frankly, I think I may have been shipped a youth size by accident because the thing doesn't even fit on my head. I wear a size medium hockey helmet and do not have sizing issues with other hats. I would recommend picking a different hat unless you can easily return it in store. The return shipping costs are probably not worth even trying to return it.

It is NOT reversible as advertised.

The merino fabric of the beanie is very soft and nice quality. BUT - It is NOT reversible as advertised. I bought the "Charcoal Mtn Scape" beanie and the charcoal/inside of the beanie has a 3 piece tag sewn into the seam of the beanie MIDWAY up on the seam. I'm afraid trying to remove the tags would cause the seam to come apart. Cutting the tags close would still leave white tag stumps in the middle of the charcoal side of the beanie. Also, The gathered cloth of 2 layers at the top of the beanie leaves a lumpy ball of fabric. Even though I really like the colors and fabric, I will be returning the beanie. I expected better from Smartwool.

Great for Small Head

I tried on in store and bought the one size solid black. I am a petite women and finding hats that fit is a struggle for me. This hat fit snug on my head, I can turn up the cuff so it doesn’t cover my face! This hat is snug enough that there is no gap and hugs my ears to keep them warm. The material is soft to touch not scratchy. I bought for cold weather hiking and the bit of cold weather we get in North Carolina. I wore it in Sedona, AZ hiking when temperature dropped to in the 30/40's. It kept my head warm, the wool breathes (who knew) and my head did not sweat. Looking forward to wearing this winter.

Completely impressed

I just bought this hat and I love it. I need to wear a hat sometimes when I work but every beanie I try is too hot or itchy. This one only gets itchy if I cuff it or roll it up, I guess the double layer is tighter and doesn't breath as well so I just don't roll it up. The other night I dropped it coming in from work and it spent all night in the street during a violent rain storm. I found it in the morning and it was dry enough to wear in 3 hours and no visible damage. It was covered in little rocks, dirt, and leaves and it looks like I just bought the thing. I love everything of Smartwool that I've ever owned, but it tends to be kinda delicate. Not this hat.

The Perfect hat, even in Chicago

I found this hat at my local REI in the clearance section and always wanted to try something by Smart Wool, but the pricetag makes it hard to commit to. Being skeptical and it being on clearance, I bought it and am very impressed. The materially feels like nothing else I have worn, stretches but retains shape, light but very warm, breathable but retains warmth. It's like Smart Wool is made with alien technology and has the best of everything. Well worth the full price tag and a hat I plan to wear whenever I get the chance to during the cold Chicago winters.

Soft and Warm but Loose

A top-quality product from Smartwool as always. The hat is very soft and warm with zero itching. I recently wore it in an overnight ultra-race in very cold weather. It breathes well but keeps you warm. My only complaints are that it stretches out and the cuff is loose. The hat almost feels too big, and I have a large head (7 5/8"). The cuff isn't secured in place, so when you wash it, the form is lost. Since it's not a simple flip up cuff, to get it back in place, you have to pinch the material and reform the cuff all the way around the rim, which takes a few minutes with the dual layer material.

Super soft, comfy

I have had the Smartwool 250 beanie for years, wearing it whenever I need an extra warm head covering. It is amazingly soft and smooth faced, my wife hates wool but when she borrowed it, she loved it too. I have worn it skiing, camping, hiking, and backpacking, and it is still in perfect shape. I bought one for my elderly bald grandfather, and he wears it to bed every night, saying it is softer and more comfortable than anything else he has tried. By the way, I typically sweat heavily from my head during exertion, and despite that- doesnt smell! Yes, count me in on the merino miracle vouching team!

Terrible durability

I've worn it just twice and hand-washed it, and it already has 4 holes in it. This is a one-season (if that) disposable hat. And as others have mentioned, it's not reversible, as there's a large white tag sewn into one of the sides. If you remove it, you'll still be left with a white streak where the tag used to be. It's comfortable, but I've never seen anything fall apart this quickly.

Doesn't Hold Up

1. A bit to small. I had assumed this was because it was more of an athletic style fitted hat. But it barely had any stretch and was tight on my head. I would say I have a medium head. 2. Its not reversable like it says. There's a giant tag on the underside that would be difficult to remove without damaging the hat. 3. Only lasted 1 season before I started get holes. Just use it for winter running. Machine washed, layed to dry. At this point I'm done with wool as a "performance" material. Thick cozy hats and sweaters? Sure thing. Moisture wicking athletic gear? Doesn't stand up.
