Sand or Snow
I've used them in the sand to tie down my TNF Mountain 25 tent at Pinnacles. I had my doubts that they would hold, but when the temperatures dropped below freezing, they held like glue. I've also used them a few times for snow camping. They are easy to put in the ground, but don't bury them too deep or you will spend a lot of time unearthing them. Once they set in the snow, they are SET! Cheap, simple and work great. You just have to get the hang of burying them. Also, they are tough to use in blowing wind, but then again, what are your choices in sand and snow? I'm not packing in those 2lb stakes!
Excellent Product
Bought these to go with my ENO tarp for my trip to Baja. Easy to attach and didn't budge under the winds coming off the ocean. Buried them between 8 and 10 inches in the sand and they held like concrete. Excellent product here.
Effective, but not foolproof
These work. I used 6 to stake out a Noah's Tarp 16 (that's huge, BTW) on loose sand, with some easy wind, and nothing budged. They were buried almost to the black ring but i didn't bother to pack the sand down. So concept is good. If you need more holding power, you can always add a second pocket to the same line, add a line, or just pile sand on top. They are so small and light, no big deal to get a few extra. The product image shows cord from both sides of the "pocket" being attached to the black ring -- mine had only one side attached when i got them. It wasn't an obstacle for me, but i could see someone less experienced being pretty confused. Some kind of diagrams showing how the cord is meant to be connected in the field would be a good addition.
Great for the sand
We have used these anchors 4 different times at Assateague National Park for beach camping. Each time we filled the anchors with deep/wet/cold sand and fit the anchor right where we pulled the sand from, covered them with dry sand, stepped on them for good measure, and have had 100% success. We didn't use any other stakes, only these and our tent has stood strong each time. We have friends going beach camping for the first time this year and will be highly recommending these same anchors for them.
REI Snow and Sand Tent Anchors
i just got back from several days at lake Powell and i was completely blown away by how well these worked, for those who know the weather there can get crazy and it did, the wind was blowing so bad that radio was warning for capsizing boats yet my tent didn't move an inch, and only half of them were buried! even filled with rocks they just don't move just make sure you learn a couple different was to use them, buried up to the ring will obviously work the best and if your not too crazy about being light grab some cheap hardware store carabiners to attach them and that speeds me up alittle
Superior Performance!!!!
I bought these anchors to anchor down a instant conopy at South Padre Island this past week. I was not a believer of these anchors till I had a first hand experience with very gusty winds out of the ordinary due to a storm in the gulf of mexico. Long story short the guylines on the tent snapped (2 of them) and sand anchors stood their gound. Guylines from tent were still attached to sand anchors and could not believe what I was seeing. These anchors are so worth. Please invest in these of your planning on going to the beach. Totally awesome.
Good product
I recently used these on a hike-in trip to Parson's Landing on Catalina. Very lightweight, so they did not add to the pack significantly. They worked, and well. The location was hit with a front the second night I was there. The winds were pretty high with heavy gusts, advisories, boats being lost, etc. These things did not budge, and my tent was about as bent by the wind as it can get. I will get a couple more though for the vestibule because I only had 4. The regular stakes did not hold the vestibule at all, and I had to use really heavy rocks, which did eventually hold (at 2 in the morning). So, do get enough for everything, as only 4 come in the pack. Other than that, I would recommend using the wet sand trick for maximum hold. Excellent product.
Solid!!
I used these anchors on an overnight backpacking trip in snowy conditions (wet snow) recently and they worked very well. I had some SMC Sno-Tent stakes with me, which I also used, but these REI snow anchors performed the best. The snow melted around the SMC stakes and made them useless, even though we had packed down the snow in the area where we were camping, but the REI snow anchors held fast. I like the REI snow anchors because they are lighter and more compact than regular stakes. When I am camping in the snow in the future, I will be sure to bring these along!
great purchase
just got back from 3 days in the no cal sierras. these anchors worked perfect in the snow, and kept my tent from blowing away in the gusty winds. i only needed to use two with my half dome 2, so i was able to share the others with fellow campers. these worked so well, i almost didn't mind digging them out. even with the extra 2 feet of snow that fell overnight. bottom line, if you plan on pitching a tent in the snow or sand, i highly recomend this item.
Too heavy. Made my own out of Tyvek
First, this is a good quality product. They work as described. However, at four ounces I think they're too heavy for my PCT through hike. I made my own with Tyvek and some 2mm cord I bought at REI. The total weight for my DIY Tyvek solution was one ounce for all four. For a long trek like the PCT, gear weight decisions are important. The Tyvek is not as durable as the material used in this product, but I made extras and sent them to my mail-drops. This is a good product and, typically, no problem bringing them for snow camping or in a sandy environment in the desert.
