Katadyn Hiker Pro and Water Pills
I have used the Katadyn Hiker Pro Water Pump for many years backpacking along the John Muir Trail. First, the unit is light weight, but more importantly pumps a lot of water in minimal time. I typically use the water bottle attachment and then pour into my Osprey Aquatic pack. The Katadyn Hiker Pro pump and filter are easily cleaned along the trail. The filter protects against bacteria such as Giardia, and is good for filtering a substantial amount of water. After getting home, the filter can be cleaned and used for future trips. I carry the Katadyn water pills as a secondary source of clean water in case I accidentally lose my Hiker Pro.
good for 5days
We used this to filter water while at Northern Tier in Canada. The clarity of the lake water was 12 feet. It worked well with good flow for the first three days, and on the fourth day, the flow rate dropped noticeably. on the fifth day it was just dripping. We were careful to get the cleanest water from the center of the lake and I tried to rinse the filter after every other day. I would use this again, but would look to see if there is any other way to extend the filter life. We only filtered about five gallons per day. I would recommend this to a friend with the warning about the limited life issue
filter element medium has changed
I've been using the Hiker for decades, even back when it was PUR. Through experience I know how long the cartridges last. I use an MSR SiltStopper on the intake to extend filter life. I usually replace every two years even, though they still pump the charcoal no longer works as well. I bought a replacement filter 6 months ago and it's already clogged after only two trips pumping relatively clear water, probably less than 10-15 liters total. Other reviewers are right, either it's a bad batch of filters or filter medium has changed. I compared it to my son's older filter and the element material seems different.
Garbage
I've gone through several of these filter cartridges and never had a problem until the last one I bought. Never used in anything but clear water, became almost impossible to pump after just one day. Went through the whole cleaning/lubrication procedure when I got home, then on the next trip same thing: after one day it became almost impossible to pump. Something is clearly defective here, but REI wouldn't take a return on it. These filters should last for 750 liters of water, typically 5 years for me. This one's only been on 4 short trips and is garbage. At $55 a pop REI and Katadyn need to do better than that.
The Bomb
I am former river guide, back packer and mountain biking enthousiast... I have used this product for >10 years, on back packing trips ranging fom 30 to 300 miles, and always carrying it with me on other activities so I don't run out of water ever... the hiker is bomb proof... the only time I have seen someone get sick is when they did not take care to keep the intake and output separate... seriously prolong the filter life of this product by prefiltering with the tip of a paint strainer tied around the intake with a hair bungee (get from local paint or hardware store)... enjoy!
Replacing water filter
Filter was very easy to replace and worked great while I was in the back country!
wish I kept my old filter
I have been using my Katadyn Hiker for the last decade and never had any problems...until I replaced the filter recently. On my last trip into the East Humboldt Range, I had to filter some sketchy water on the first night. It was dark and I definitely sucked up some silt on the first couple of pumps before I realized what was happening. I was able to pump enough water for that night, but the filter was toast. When I tried to clean the filter the next day, I noticed that the pre-filter was very clean and that the sediment made its way to the main filter element with no problem. Luckily one of my companions had brought his brand new Katadyn Hiker Pro. However that filter also became almost impossible to pump after only 7 liters from what I considered to be a pretty clear water source (8-10 feet of visibility). Has something changed on the new filters? I've never had these sorts of issues before.
Katadyn - Katadyn Hiker PRO Element
I purchase this as a back up filter I will be carrying in my backpack when I start my thru-hike of the A.T. on February 16, 2015. I am still using a Pur Hiker. The Katadyn Hiker PRO Element works in my old Pur Hiker. It's a great product that I have used for almost twenty years.
New run of elements doesn't fit properly
These filters used to be perfect. In the past year me and my coworkers on a trail crew, who all have the same Hiker and Hiker Pro filters, have all noticed that these new replacement filters have some tolerance issues and do not screw in properly. Thus they leak around the top and the cleanliness of the output water is in question
great filter
I have always wrapped a coffee filter with a rubber band around the prefilter.
