Effective sun and water cap
We do extended kayak trips in hot, saltwater conditions.I prefer caps over broad brimmed hats (they seem to blow off and bump into things more) but need sun protection, paticularly for my face and neck.I've worn my white Sun Runner on the ocean under hot sun for days on end. I swim with it on and I can tell you it is super lite and comfortable, drys very fast and the snaps and fabric have been unaffected by salt water. The bill length is 2.75". The removable shroud, which I remove for walking around town, is about 10.25" long. It's not cheap but it works well for sun and water and I can't imagine something better.Happy trails!

Cape = personal neck oven
I love the *hat* part; it functions as expected and looks great as a standard quick-drying baseball cap... but that's not why we're all buying it, I assume. The cape - its selling point - makes the hat unbearable. It's such a good idea in theory, isn't it? But no. Just no. I wore it for backpacking the Cactus-to-Clouds Trail from Palm Springs up to Mt. San Jacinto (10,000' in one day). I quickly jettisoned the cape because it became a portable oven around my neck and head, no matter how loose I tied it. It's so much more attractive than the big floppy wide-brimmed sun hats, but I think I'll have to take ugly for function's sake.... It is probably great for *cool* sunny days, but overheating is a much more common problem for my main activities at least: backpacking, hiking, and running, mostly in California.

Below average, poor durability

Hat started to fall apart after < 9 months and led to pressure points near my temples/forehead. Maybe I should've been more gentle with washing/product care, but for something designed for high output activities I would expect better durability. Adidas makes a similar white running hat called the "Superlite" that is vastly superior IMO, so if your looking for something specific for running/marathon training I would search for that instead. The Adidas hat also still looks and feels perfect after a year of use.

Best Sun Hat Ever!

I hike weekly in the Mohave Desert (and elsewhere) and have found this to be the best hiking hat ever! It's lightweight and protects my face and neck from the brutal sun. The adjustable strap in the front keeps the flaps in place and the hat from blowing off my head-- even in strong winds. The brim is the right length for uphill rock scrambling where it's easy to "ring your bell" on an unseen tree branch or outcropping of rock if the brim is too long. Most of my endeavors are extremely strenuous leaving me dirty and drenched in sweat. I just toss this in the washing machine machine and let it air dry after each hike. The hat always looks brand-new for my next adventure.

Amazing hat

I use this hat while running, hiking, driving, walking, just about any time I'm outside. I get migraines, and sun glare is a trigger, so this does an great job in protecting my eyes without looking overly bulky. It is much more comfortable than a regular baseball cap. The lightweight material makes you forget you're wearing it. The well ventilated material also allows sweat to evaporate pretty quickly, and keeps your head cool. I only wish REI sold this without the drape, just the hat portion, since that's what I use most. I only use the drape when backpacking, when my neck will be exposed for long periods of time. I would definitely recommend this. I even bought one for my sister who is an avid runner, and she loves it.

Perfect for desert trail running

This hat worked great during 25 mile Rabbit Peak run/hike in the Anza Borrego desert. Definitely keep me cooler and helped protect from the long sun exposure.

My son stole mine... until I got him his own.

I read a number of reviews, including one on a site that only does outdoor gear reviews that had me all but sold. Lucky me--a friend got me this as a present, but I didn't get a chance to use it for a few months until we went to steamy Florida for vacation. While there, my son was getting too hot in his more standard baseball cap, so I swapped hats with him (after removing the cape). He liked it so much he didn't want to give me the Sun Runner back for the rest of the vacation. So I did the only logical thing: got him his own. He's thrilled! The Sun Runner now keeps both of us cool-looking and even cooler in actuality, and we're stoked to try them out in Utah and at Scout Camp this summer.

Excellent Hat! Worth Every Penny!

I have been looking for a great sun hat and this is it! The removable cape on the hat is nice but my concern is sun protection and a reduction in sun bloc use. I don't like getting bloc on jackets, etc. as it degrades the material. I've tried several other sun hats, but usually the cape is so light that the slightest wind blows it up and back to the sides or top of the hat. The draw cord on the Sun-runner prevents this. It is a well-made hat and lightweight. I got the khaki color and the length of the brim is good for me. I've only had the hat a short time, but it feels great and does the job wonderfully. I spend most days in the sun and wind, or rain exposed to the elements here in Oregon, but I can honestly say that the Sun-runner provides great sun protection.

Excellent sun hat

I have had my sun runner hat for 5 years and have used it a great deal in a bunch of very hot areas (Arizona, Utah, Costa Rica, Caribbean Islands, etc) and it is still in great shape. The cape works very well and is a good length to keep the sun off your neck. The hat is light enough where I hardly notice it and even with the cape on it does not become hot to wear for extended periods of time. Also appreciate the fact the cape is removable for time you just want a cap. All in all, an excellent purchase.

Not for Baldies

As someone with a small melon, I appreciate the various sizing available. Nice not to be in "one size fits all" world as usual for hats. The mesh sides are disappointing in that my bald head gets sunburned thru the mesh. You can move the veil up towards the top of the hat to cover the mesh if you remember, though this then exposes more of your neck so it's a trade-off. Wish they made this without the mesh.

Withstands the test of time

I bought this specifically for trips to the desert. The neck gaiter covers well and keeps the sun out. It is light, dries quickly, doesn't retain odor, and amazingly, doesn't seem to stain. I wear this hat a lot without the gaiter as well. Highly recommend for extreme conditions to keep your head and neck from getting sunburned.
