Great for traveling

This paddle is great when traveling with an inflatable kayak. The paddle fits (barely) in the backpack for my Innova Safari. Sometimes it takes all my strength to separate the blades from the aluminum shaft. But I wouldn't want the blades to be wobbly, either. The aluminum shaft definitely feels noodly when I paddle furiously in big waves. But I'm still in control on class II and II+ rapids. There seem to be very few quality 4-piece paddles on the market. This one is satisfactory for most touring and recreational applications.

Paddle is good, but too much effort to take apart.

Paddle performs as advertised, no complaints there. The issue is trying to store it for travel; the experience of taking the poles and paddles apart is dismal. Being a 4-piece paddle, there are 3 quick-connect points. They are all extremely tight and almost impossible to take apart. I am a full grown adult male, and I struggle to disconnect these every time. My system for doing this is: try to disconnect the two poles first, by pressing down on the button, hard enough to make a mark on my thumb. Quickly turn one pole enough to keep the button depressed. Then wiggle/twist as hard as I can to break the two poles apart. I have to try really hard to do this, and I am not exaggerating. Once I have two poles, I have to disconnect the heads. It’s the same process, but with only a pole in one hand, and a paddle head in the other. My method for doing this is to press down as hard as I can, sometime using a literal tree branch that I pick up off the ground, or one of my keys, to press the button down enough to clear the hole. When I can accomplish that, I twist it enough to keep the button depressed, then I place the paddle between my knees, and I twist and pull the pole out. Then I do the same with the other end. Honestly, by now, I am sweaty and swearing quietly to myself so my family doesn’t hear me. Peering into the inside of the poles, the aluminum is already extremely scratched up by this twist/pull technique. I assume the poles will last, but with each disassembly, I am scratching away a little bit of aluminum at a time. The tolerances of this connection is just too tight. It’s not like this quick connect system is unique, it’s just extremely tight. I have another paddle that is a $20 cheapie big box store paddle, that stows exactly the same, except I have zero issues with it. So… it’s a good paddle, but with the amount of effort it takes to break down for travel and storage, I can’t recommend it. For the record, I opted to not buy the recommended 2-piece paddle for my kayak, thinking this 4-piece one was an upgrade as I could break it down smaller for easier travel. It certainly can become smaller, but the amount of effort required almost makes it not worth it. I may return it to REI for these reasons mentioned above.
