Never use an open hook on a tiedown.
Never use an open hook on a tiedown. Many members of our Club use these tiedowns. They are very good up to a point. The ratchet works very well and does not tend to overtighten like ratchet straps. However, never use an open hook on a tiedown, especially on a longer boar and if you are securing the hook to a towing eye on the vehicle. On a rough road or windy day the kayak will tend to flex a bit on the saddles and the hook can come loose. If it gets caught by a tire it can destroy the boat and can damage your rack and car. In the years that I've been kayaking, I have personally seen this happen at least 6 times. One was a carbon Kevlar sea kayak that was only 2 weeks old. Total loss of the boat. Even if not caught by a tire, the hook can flail around and ding up your car before you can stop. Replace the open hook with something more secure and this kit is an excellent product.
strong and safe
These tie downs are not only a requirement, but they do add a huge amount of stability to your boat. I experienced nearly no wobble or movement with a two-person kayak on my roof at speeds up to 80 mph.
good product
Product doubles as a means of storing/suspending canoe or car top carrier from my garage ceiling on i-bolts. the ratchets allow you to raise or lower the canoe on to your car. Expensive (for what it is) but durable and well designed.
HOOKS ARE DANGEROUS
This is an amazing product other than the inherently dangerous design flaw of using hooks instead of carabiners on the ratchet & rope. I would give the product 5 stars otherwise but due to this glaring flaw that will fail I cannot give it above 1 star. I would recommend getting the Thule product until/unless this is fixed. FYI, Thule has not updated their web pictures to show they have a carabiner but they changed to a carabiner from the hook aprox 5 years ago so be rest assured it is not a hook. Once Yakima updates this product I will change my review to 5 stars.
HOOKS ARE DANGEROUS
Great product other than the inherent design flaw that makes it a dangerous product. Having a hook instead of carabiner is inherently dangerous and will lead to vehicle and boat damage if it detaches. I will be buying the Thule version and recommending the Thule version until this product is fixed.
