CAUTION SUBARU OUTBACK 2020 OWNERS

As of today (8/24/20), the REI sales page says: "LP15 pads should be paired with SkyLine Towers for use with 2015 or later model Subaru Outback." But it ain't so for the 2020!! The roof rack has changed for the 2020 Outback, making the LP15 incompatible. I just spoke with Yakima service. They are making a new landing pad for the 2020 Outback, which reportedly will be called #27, and it not available yet. To REI: You guys are great, but please update your sales page! I ordered the LP15, and it wrecked some plans I had since I was counting on installing the LP15 pads before the trip :-(

Lots of parts

I originally had the cross bars that went on the rails of my Toyota Highlander. We then went to a 2011 Subaru Outback and found the OMG crossbars too close together for weight distribution. I had to buy new pads and towers for my bars(parts, parts and more parts). REI had a sale and I bought 2sets landing pads as we were going to replace the Toyota with a 2018 Subaru Outback. Due to a change in the rack, the second set didn’t fit. Although it had been a couple of months REI allowed a swap(lost the sale price and had to pay the difference). Everything worked out. You just have to work on reducing all the parts.

>= any other rack mount method

As a former owner of a Volvo wagon with roof rails, the bare racks were noisy at speed and dropped the mpg by 2 or more. I disliked the headache of the 10 minute removal of my bars when I wasn't carrying a bike or kayak. I did a bit of research. A friend advised having rails installed and Landing pads, permitting a very fast removal and installation. My replacement vehicle is the newly redesigned Hyundai Elantra--I felt a bit nervous about having permanent hardware (by a Portland, OR rack installing firm) on a new model car, but I felt reassured by their professional approach re: air bag gas cylinders and positioning the bars so that my kayak wouldn't point up or down. I pulled the trigger, going with the landing pads, but not the rails. Labor was $100. As I had my own lock cores and bars, adding Landing Pads & Control Towers brought the total cost to $329. The standard rack system using Q towers and clips would have required much more work to attach/detach and would have left me feeling much less secure about the installation. The labor cost might be less, if you have a car like Mazda 3, which has nuts built in under the composite roof strips. I am happy.

Good Fit on 2011-2019 Grand Cherokee

I purchased the Yakima landing pad kit for my 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee with flush factory rails after having Fitment problems and excessive wind noise with pedistals from another brand. The Yakima landing pads fit this vehicle perfectly. I was able to install the landing pads on the forward-most and rear-mold holes. The pads line up straight with the rails to minimize gaps and wind noise.

Poor quality

The first set of landing pad we recieved were warped and the skyline towers did not fit into them once they were installed on the roof. Had to get Yakima to send us a new set of landing pads. Those worked, but then the Skyline Towers did not work. 1 of the 4 didn't tighten correctly on the cross bars. Yakima sent two replacement towers, and neither worked as well as I assume both were returned/refurbished items. Returned everything to the store and will shop Thule as their product quality is much higher.

Fits my Subaru Outback, but the cap needs redesign

It fit my Subaru Outback without issues. However, the cap that goes on it isn't tight and will probably blow off as I have to keep pushing it down every time I come back from a drive. I expected better from Yakima.

Beware of denting

The Landing Pad 11 seems like a great product, but it dents cars. Even with minimal tightening it dents BMW 3 Series. The worst part about this is it is a known issue with Yakima and they refuse to change the fit or even put a warning on it. The good news is that if it dents your car you can get them to pay for the damage, but it takes FOREVER for them to process it.

LP 15 pads do NOT work with newer Outbacks

Despite REI's product description, LP15s do not work with later model Outbacks. I have a 2021 and I suspect with the redesign in 2019 they won't work with models since then. Really bad taste for REI to advertise 2015+ compatibility.

Typically awesome Yakima

Works great on cars with factory hard-points on the roof. Fit my 2013 Subaru Impreza perfectly. Yakima round bars are much sturdier than the OEM Subaru crossbars (also made by Yakima, I believe, but pretty flimsy aero-type bars).
