Hope for a headwind...
I did a recent backpacking trip in which I used 3 different makers of Wag Bags. I will tell you that this one preformed BYFAR the WORST. They are all the same as far as their "operation" and functionality, but what really matters here is the oder afterwards. A lot of oder was escaping from this wag bag hence making for some unpleasant walking. The wag bags that worked the best, with no oder escaping, were ones that had mylar outer bag, not permeable plastic. And, also, nowhere in the instructions does it state that you need to "add fluids", a very important ingredient to make the breakdown process occur.
Leaks odor
Luckily I had a sealable bucket so my campmates didn't murder me! They seemed to work fine. I tied the bag in a knot and then sealed it in the provided ziplock, then put it inside a heavy duty trash bag, and then sealed in my bucket. After the trip I had to throw the bucket away because the smell stuck to it even after airing it outside for 3 days and giving it a soak. I can't imagine what the car ride would've been like if I didn't have that bucket! Be warned! I think it would be fine if you were able to dispose of it shortly after, not a multi day trip.
I'm a convert. Really. It's not that bad.
I had to use these for a recent backpacking trip in a sensitive area. I thought it would be awful, but it was not. There's a big bag to go #2 in (don't go #1 in it). More than one person can go. There is a little TP in the bag but just one wet wipe so you may want to take a few extras in your bathroom kit. When everyone is done, you squish out the air to make it as small as possible and put it inside an extra sturdy zip-lock baggie that comes in the kit. A friend gave me a tip to bring along a screw-top plastic jar to store the zip-locks in. I used the kind of jar that peanut butter pretzels come in and then threw the whole thing away at the end of the trip. There was no mess, no smell and I felt very good about leaving a clean campsite. (OK this is pretty funny, REI wouldn't let me post the original version of this review due to "profanity." How am I supposed to review this product without saying what it's for?)
Your standard Wag Bag
If you climb Mount Whitney, you are given this very same Wag Bag by the Eastern Sierra Interagency Visitor Center. But given that reusing a bag is just NASTY, it is always a good idea have a few more on hand for the hike should you have to go more than once. Using the bag itself needs no explanation. But there are a few things that should be considered. First of all, bring toilet paper with you. These Wag Bags have toilet paper, but only a laughably small amount - FAR less than the average person is likely to use. Bring some small trash bags with you. There is a Ziploc bag included. But it may be too small should you have to go ALOT. But even if you CAN fit the used bag into the provided Ziploc, double bagging is certainly not a bad idea, given what you are carrying. A moist towelette is included, but once again, it is rather meager. Consider bringing something larger in terms of a towelette and/or baby wipes order to clean up afterwards.
Easy clean up
I used these bags on a recent camping trip to try out my new Lugaloo (bucket with toilet seat). I had read reviews that suggested cat litter in a garbage bag, but for a few days and use for one person I was willing to splurge on these bags. They worked out great as they included all the essentials (tp, hand wipe, trash bag and moisture crystals). It didn’t seem like there were enough crystals at first, but I was surprised to find that they worked as intended turning liquid to gel which made for easier clean up. Just tie off the bag, place in the included zip lock bag, and throw away. No mess, no smell, super easy! I really enjoyed having my own little potty in my tent vestibule as I always have to get up at least once and normally lay there dreading going out into the cold dark night. The bags made the process easy and were worth it for me.
Good for the unexpected
I use these when traveling to & from camping. Campsites usually have facilities, but when driving, rest stops with toilets are few and far between in Texas. Works best if you add some liquid to mix the chemicals. Seal it up in the included heavy duty zip lock bag when done. If you're careful, its all very sanitary. Not going to include a video...
Does The do for your liquids and your boom
Because of the pandemic my vacation was solo camping for 2 weeks. With bath houses closed and public space questionable, i opted for a privacy tent and a loo bucket. These bags are really good and come with that porta-potty chrysalis in it so your not smelling yourself literally after a couple of days in the campsite. After your done you bag goes in another ziplock bag that makes sure your private excrements are private and not shared where ever you dump it.
It went everywhere!
I’ve used this for many camping trips and it has worked great. I’ve even used it with 3 full grown men and never had any issues. Well my mother in-law said she loved it. ( I don’t know how many people went in it or if it was just her. But when I went to change the bag. It literally ripped at the seams!! Feces wen everywhere in our privacy stall. I had it all over my feet and hands. I asked my mother in law to help me clean it. I’m sure she felt awful. I’m not sure if REI had the bags for too long or if they were defective.
It does what it says it does
This is a handy product that really helps to Leave No Trace. It's easy to use, sanitary, and the bags seem durable enough for multiple uses, although I, personally, would make it a one-use deal.
Better than blue bags
Used on the summit of Shasta rather than the free bags at trailhead. The deal is better, the plastic is thicker, and the biggie is its not see through!
