Katadyn- Solid Filtration System
I own a Katadyn Pocket Filter, Circa 1992 model. Got it when I was in Military working operations in Panamanian Jungle. I couldn't be happier with the system- and its still working just fine- still using the original ceramic filter assembly. This filter system is built to last and is very easy to clean and store-away for its next use. One of those items you will have forever and will always work dependably when you need it. My old filter is identical to todays except aqua blue color and less user friendly outlet spout (not shaped to accept a tube/hose; you have to aim the spout so the water shoots out into what you are filling.)
Great Filter for the Tropics!!!
I've been using this filter for more than 2 years and almost in all of the major treks I was able to bring it with me. Most water sources in the Philippine Mountains come from streams or underwater holes and usually turbid during the summer season. The filter became a life-saver not just for me but for my entire group and even other groups that we encountered along the trail. I have a very sensitive stomach and this filter worked for me. I'm planning to replace the filter soon although expensive, it is worth it.You can read my other review here: http://smbmountaineers.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=92&Itemid=42If you read my blogs you will find out why this filter is a life-saver :)
Lasts a lifetime
I bought this filter 20 years ago and used it extensively. Due to a variety of factors, I stopped backpacking for about a decade and have resumed backpacking. Last summer pulled out the filter, cleaned it out, which is easy and it worked just like new. I understand the newer model has a clip to place the output tube in a water bottle, but I have jerry-rigged my own clip and it works great. If the filter gets dirty, it can be a little difficult to pump. However, a quick and easy cleaning of the ceramic filter remedies the problem. I love this filter and am really happy that I didn't discard it or give it away in my hiatus from backpacking.
High Quality Top of the Line
I purchased the Katadyn Pocket in 1998 when I was a senior in high school. The year before this, my my buddy took me on my first backpacking trip. We took a cheep [name brand] plastic water filter which broke on the second day; we had to boil all our water for the next three days! When I got back from the trip I knew that I loved backpacking, and did some research and decided to spend the $$$ on the Katadyn. 21 years later, and at least one trip each year, this filter is still going strong. For me the weight is a trade off for quality, health, and peace of mind. This unit is one of my favorite things!
Fewer Moving Parts
I bought a Katadyn Pocket Filter 20 years ago. In fact, it is still in great shape and going strong. I recently purchased the newest model because of the improvements Katadyn made. Yes, for hiking or backpacking, this filter is slightly heavier than all the other plastic pump filters out there, but here is what I love about this filter: it is made of quality solid materials, which means fewer moving parts; the ceramic element can be disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled in the backcountry in a matter of minutes; and it will filter down to 0.2 microns, clean up to 13,000 gallons, and comes with a 20 year manufacturers warranty.
Premium quality at a Premium price.
I Ordered this july 23 for two reasons, one is as a camping filter, which i have used on 2 week long trips. the other is as an emergency water source should freshwater be unavailable. functioned flawlessly, and is made of VERY high quality materials. the price obviously reflects it. i feel confident i could use this to filter water from any stream or pond, it is heavy, but durable. some of the streams i used it in were very silty, and it handled them just fine. not an exceptional value for the dollar, but if you have the extra money, and want the best, this is it. beware of other glass fiber filters, as they can break given a hard jar.
Solid high performance filter
Our Scout troop just returned from a 5 day backpacking hike in Alaska. One filter stopped working, leaving our party of 14 with this Katadyn and a couple Sawyer squeeze filters. I've had this filter for years, but it just got a real workout. Yes, it's heavy. We took turns carrying it. However, it's rock solid. Cleaning on trail is easy, if you remember to pack the scrub... we sacrificed a toothbrush. I slept with it in my bag a couple times as it got near freezing at night at higher altitudes. I'd estimate we filtered at least 30 liters a day, likely 40 some days, of lovely mountain snow melt stream water. The base with the Highly recommend this filter. Just remember to bring the scrub.
After 35 years, it's still kicking butt
I bought my Katadyn pocket water filter for my first climbing trip to Nepal in 1983 because of steller reviews from the World Health Organization. After five more Himalayan treks, countless Rocky Mountain pack trips, and pumping water from everything imaginable-- clear streams, muddy cowpastures, and 3-star New Delhi restaurants, with routine easy maintenance in the field and at home, it's tough as a tank, and still ticking. Using it, I've never gotten any water-borne illness. It's fully disassemblable, and every part is replaceable, if needed. I've never replaced anything but a couple gaskets and one ceramic cartridge after years of heavy use. So why only "four stars?" Only because of the weight, which is eclipsed by many of the newer tools. With any party of 3 or more, however, the difference vanishes, and the reliability, durability, and ease of use of the Pocket, once again shines.
Great Filter
I love the Katadyn Pocket Water Filter. The filter was provided to me by the US military for use while working in Africa. It was an upgrade from the MSR Mini Works that I have been using off and on for the last 10 years. The Mini Works has served me well over the years, but I have been left boiling my water on two occasions; once due to a broken o-ring and once due to a broken handle (the Mini Works is plastic). The Katadyn Pocket Water Filter is very robust and it appears to engineered and built for years of use. I've been using this filter every day for nearly six months without issue. If you are looking for quality, long lasting performance, ease of use, and if you can get over the price, you will be happy with this filter. My one complaint is the travel case/bag that the filter comes with. It's made of cheap material, both fabric and zipper. For the price I expected better.
Reliable and Durable
I bought this filter in 1988, and for a long time it was my go-to backpacking and canoeing water filter. It is easy to use and easy to maintain in the field. The only drawback is the weight (hence the 4 stars), which is why it only sees use on short trips in recent years - I have lighter options now. It is still going strong. I have not had to replace any parts. A very high quality product.
