This is definitely a keeper
Titanium equipment is super-light, but also expensive. This is one piece of Ti cookware that's worth it. This is best suited for cooking about 2 cups (maybe 2 1/2 cups) or less, which is a good size for ramen noodles, oatmeal, rice, spaghetti (break the noodles in half!), etc., for 1-2 persons -- which also means you can use it as a single pot, and then leave the rest of the pots and pans at home. It's also perfectly sized for using with alcohol or "soda can" stoves. Tip: You'll need pack a pot clamp or lifter with you when using this - the thin wire handles will get too hot to grab with your bare hands.
Never Leaves My Pack
After searching high and low for the "perfect" solo backpacking pot I finally gave this one a try. For the size to weight ratio it can't be beat. The only other one that came close was the REI/Evernew Pasta Pot at 1L however the lid on that piece was flimsy, bent and never stayed on. With this pot, the lid stays nice and tight so I can store all of my cooking gear inside it and it won't come out in my pack At 4oz, it's one of the lightest on the market as well. I use this with an alcohol or woodburning stove and an MSR folding spoon and my total cook it is ~6oz! It's durable after numerous trips and shows almost no signs of wear. You won't regret getting one.
Great kettle
Tested this kettle on an electric stove and it performed as was expected. The lid handle locks in the up position when using so you don't burn yourself and folds flat when not in use. The handles do NOT get hot at all contrary to what I've read in other reviews. The lid fits snug into the kettle but comes off easy enough if you hold the handles while lifting off the lid. Holding the handles while lifting off the lid will help prevent spillage. Steam escapes through a hole in the lid which keeps boiling overflow from occurring. Small propane canister fits inside the kettle for space efficiency. Practically weightless. Great product.
A few tricks for the MSR kettle
As a solo minimalist, I really like this puppy! It has enough useful capacity (3cups/750ml) for me, myself and I. The handles do get a bit hot, but are easily handled with the pliers of my ever-present multi-tool. A few tricks I picked up: Note that there are three rows of three indentations on the inside of the kettle (where the rivets connect to the handle). These rivets are strategically placed at the one, two and three cup levels. I've also found out that an 8 oz. MSR ISOPRO cannister fits perfectly and rattle free inside the kettle with room to throw in a couple of other small items. It's not absolutely PERFECT but it's pretty close. Since there is no 4.5 rating, I give this little gem a 5.
for realz
i carry a big backpack, with a whole lot of things inside of it. some things i love, some things i don't. i have used the .85L Titan tea for almost four years, and it has gained a permanent place in my backpack, and in my heart. as i write this review, i imagine losing or breaking my MSR titan tea kettle, and it saddens me to the very marrow of my bones. over the years, it has boiled water for me, simmered dinner for me, kept my tea warm for me. it has been used over alcohol, gas and woodburning stoves, and still looks brand new. totally worth the money, duuuude
It broke…
I’ve always heard great things about this kettle and was wanting to see if it could potentially replace my Snow Peak 700 since the Titan has a functional lid. Well, less than a month after purchasing the Titan the spot welds holding the tab into the lid gave out. This was only from pulling on the tab to remove the lid (which fits very snug) from the pot. I never even got a chance to test it out in the field, but it looks like it’s going back to the store. Maybe I just got a dud but for the price I just expected more.
Perfect pot for 1
I love the simplicity of this pot. I have several other titanium pot with pan-lids that are more cumbersome than not and straining liquid from pasta was tricky. Besides, I found it impossible to use those lids as fry pans as the food always heats up too fast, sticks to the pan and burns. I purchased the MSR Flex pan for frying and this Tea Kettle for all my other cooking. It's super light, compact, and large fuel canister can nest inside. Straining is easy with the lid and pour spout combination. I have paired it with a slightly larger pot for two and use only the Tea Kettle when flying solo. It is, however, a little price. Then again, all titanium products thin the wallet.
Quality Product
The kettle is a quality product. I like it in all ways except for the following. I like to repackage my dehydrated food in lighter, smaller ziplock bags. They pack easier into a bear can. I use my kettle to heat water and then add the food into the kettle, sometimes let it simmer for a little bit to aid rehydration, and eat it right out of the pot. It works great with the contents of a backpacker food package for 2 people as long as it calls for only 2 cups of water. Anything over that doesn't fit. If it accommodated another 1/2 cup of water, it would be perfect.
Worth the Wait
I have wanted a Titan Kettle for years and finally bought one! It is a wonderful pot/kettle for solo and 2-person trips. It is used for hot beverages, freeze dried meals and treating water. It replaces a very well used Open Country 5-cup Percolator (used without the insert). I greatly appreciate the decrease in weight and bulk of the Titan while being able to fit a Kovea Spider, 100 g canister and Ocelot wind screen inside.
GREAT LARGE LIGHT DENT-ABLE POT
I had a little bit larger Stanley titanium pot that I used for 10 years, it was heavier but super durable. This dented on a rock as soon as I dropped it in the parking lot but other than that, it’s very light and has a wide mouth. It can probably fit two packs of ramen which is what I was looking for. So I don’t mind the dent but I’m sure there will be more to come, overall I’m still very happy with it.
