Not TSA-proof
This would be a great case if no-one would open it. I took one trip with it and TSA opened it in both directions (they left notes inside). It is apparently too complicated for them to operate. When I arrived at my destination and unpacked, there was a full-thickness gouge in the base of one of my skis (down to the white core). On the return trip, the Sportube arrived without the pin that holds the two sections together. I returned it. Next time I travel with skis, I'll buy a travel bag, which will be much simpler for the folks from TSA to operate (they don't have to take it apart for inspection, just open the zipper).
The way to go
I've used this for the last couple of seasons, traveling all over US and Canada. Incomparably better than soft cases - no worries or damage when using this. Wheels on the case are really welcome at the end of a long day hauling gear into and out of airports. Just be sure to replace the basic lock pin - it doesn't survive through handling by TSA and the airlines. Pony up for the combo lock to keep the case closed correctly.
Almost Perfect
I have used this case for long storm chasing trips in South America and ski travel throughout North America. Was once approached by a SWAT team in Buenos Aires since they thought I had a bomb/rocket launcher when I went to a bank because the case looks so menacing. It protected my skis from numerous flights, baggage handlers, and bus drivers around the world. Recently I found that it will NOT hold my new powder skis as the AT bindings make the skis too thick and the brakes are too wide to fit inside. ONLY use this with Alpine Bindings or Dynafit/Tele gear. I found that they do not handle tip widths above 135mm without major issues. I prefer the hard cases for the lack of insurance issues with the airlines and big Airlines do not charge fees for skiers with these cases over the soft bags. Telescoping poles are much better to get into the box than full poles. One last note, the built in handles will cut your knuckles open in hurried handling of the bag. To avoid this, wrap them thoroughly with duct tape.
Nice manufacturing, too small, DIY padding
I bought this for my son who flies a lot. This was a very exciting Christmas present - until we tried his skis. The skies and binding do not fit. Also, there is no padding with these. You will need to buy foam.
Works great
I've had a Series 2 for about 10 yrs now and its got some scratches but otherwise still working fine. The Series 2 is overkill when I'm traveling by myself so finally got a Series 1. It fit my 186cm Nordica Enforcer Free 104s (135-104-124) and Marker Griffon bindings with room to spare. I suspect a lot of the people struggling to fit their skis in aren't using it correctly. Like the review with a picture of the bindings clipped together is not correct. Look on Sportube's webpage for instructions but you use the included bands to lift up the brakes and then the bindings face one another with the ski bases facing up. Only semi complaint would be that they should include some of the nylon straps for the Series 1 that they include in the Series 2 and 3. Using the straps to keep the skis together makes it much easier to take them in and out of the tube. Luckily I had some already from my Series 2. I've used Voile straps to do the same when I lost the nylon ones on a trip.
Solid Product
I bought this product before a trip to Lake Tahoe to make sure my skis made it there in one piece. Once everything is packed in the case, it is very secure and items do not shift. My equipment made it there safely and the product served its purpose. It is a little tedious to put on the rubber straps on the ski breaks and slide the skis into the case but not really an issue. It has wheels which is great, although I found myself carrying the case because it was easier to maneuver that way. It comes with a wheeling handle which is removable and a nice feature because the handle tends to be sharp along the underside. I think its a great product overall. It may be a bit pricey but you have to think of what it will be protecting which is probably expensive equipment. It seems like they offer a wide range of sizes of their cases to carry a variety of equipment, which I assume all work well. This was perfect for me as I only intended to carry one pair of skis for myself. I usually don't write reviews, but there were very few for this product and I think anyone interested should know that it is worth investing in.
Best gear protection when flying
I use this whenever traveling by air. Being a hard case, you know your skis and poles will be protected when the baggage handlers toss around and stack bags on top of each other. While not the easiest to maneuver and carry (the wheels help), it definitely provides peace of mind. You'll need to secure ski brakes with the included rubber bands before it will fit inside the case. The case halves nestle together to half the total length for convenient storage.
I wanted to like this
Bought this for an upcoming trip and was not super impressed. The description says "padded" but in reality it is just some styrofoam shoved into each end. Additionally it is not easy to load/unload. I ski on "skinny" shaped skis and they barely fit. I would not recommend if you use fatter powder skis.
Great for traveling with 2 pairs of XC skis
Bought a month ago and were great for traveling with a pair of skate skis and BC skis. I need both skis so I was ready for anything during my trip to CO.
Just what I wanted (better than a soft case)
Just used this hard case for air travel, round trip. Worked great. So easy to handle. Very balanced and light-weight when carrying with the molded handles. Wheels rolled smoothly. I stored the detachable towing handle in my boot bag. Easy to load the skis/poles. Just watch the video. Love the concept of a "just enough" case. No wasted space. Telescoping adjustable length. Easy to manage on airport/hotel vans and personal vehicles. At baggage claim, I watched others awkwardly handle their over-sized soft bags. Met a person who owns and loves his Series 3. Contents stayed dry during rain/snow when stored on condo balcony. So glad that I walked into my Colorado REI and stumbled onto this product as I had no idea they existed. I returned my unused soft case to that large online retailer. Only negative is that at some point down the line, I will lose or break the rubber-band brake-retaining straps. I figure that I'll just construct something out of parachute or bungee cord as a replacement.
