Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great hat - when you add a chin strap It's a great hat for sun or rain (except in hot weather) but can blow off in a sharp wind. So I used a nice shoe lace to create a chin strap. There is a good interior hand band, so on each side of the hat, use a tiny knfie to poke two holes in it about an inch or less a part to put the shoe lace through, creating a secure loop with a bowline knot. One end of the shoe lace goes forms this loop on one side of the hat, the other end on the other side of the hat, pulling the ends through so that the middle section fits the chin with about 3 inches to spare. Use a drawstring toggle to cinch it up with a small knot at the end to keep the toggle from coming off.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I loved this hat I loved this hat. I left it on the hatrack in Boston this weekend at a really great italian restaurant and someone stole it. Guess they liked it too. Now I have to figure out how to get my wife to approve buying another one. I don't wear it hiking--I wear a Tilly hat for that--but I really loved this hat. It's the only hat of this type I ever had that I didn't make me look like a complete imbecile. Also it was a great hat and I loved it. Maybe I'll just buy it again and take the consequences. If I wait for my wife to buy me another one it'll be Christmas or later.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Hat Wonderful hat. I have been wearing this style of hat since I got one at an REI in Bellingham, WA in 2004. Since then I've used it as a waterbowl for my dog, a waterbowl for my horse, as a towel, and as a damp piece of cloth to swat at a fire that got beyond the ring. And the hat still looks good to me. The color fades slightly with years, which doesn't bother me. Also, hat tends to expand slightly when soaking wet -- after, e.g., using it as a waterbowl -- so that a stiff wind can blow it off your head. But these are minor complaints about a great piece of headgear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great hat I wear this hat essentially every day, to and from work, walking, etc. It keeps me warm except in high wind (when the lack of earflaps is noticeable) and the brim shades my eyes well. It is also the only piece of apparel I own which actually gets compliments. "Great hat" comes up a lot. I'm a college professor, and I get compliments from students and colleagues -- a wide age range. Everyone loves this hat. The bottom left brim has turned green (probably that's hit by sun when the hat is hanging on the porch) but not very noticeable. Highly recommended.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from finally past its prime? I used this for 10+ years in Colorado. It handled the snow storms well, also light rain. This year I finally got caught in a heavy rain storm while hiking. While it got pretty soaked, it definitely kept me dry. But the crown deformed and shrank considerably when it dried. If I can't get it stretched back out, will need to get a new one. I'd say it is worth spraying with water repellent if you plan to use it in wet weather.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Signature Hat I just ordered this hat after wearing the same brand and basic model for over 15 years of heavy use. It's been with me through three university degrees, 1000s of hours of fieldwork and travel. Headlamps sit on top of the brim perfectly and it's kept rain, snow and forest debris off my head. It even kept me safe when someone thought it would be fun to get an owl to take a mouse off my head. Anyway, it's a terrific, durable hat that has served me well and I look forward to giving it a well-deserved rest and breaking in a new one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great hat for any adventure I've had this hat for 2 years now. Scorching sun or pouring rain it does the job.
Date published: 2009-11-09
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Looks good, but don't expect it to last for ever I have owned versions of this hat for over a decade, but I don't think any one has lasted for more than 2 years. The felt bleaches and slowly thins out in the sun, so you will probably want to get a new one after a while (and relegate the old one to "field duties"). They are crushable, and inexpensive enough that you don't worry about leaving it on the airplane (as opposed to my friend's multiple 100-dollar Italian hat, which does look much sharper). You can even soak it with DEET on buggy days and not have to put that stuff on your skin. Dorfman Pacific seems to be saving money by not putting the two little dyed Quail feathers in the brim, which made the hat so much nicer. They have been made in China for a while now—I did like them better when they were still made here. Certainly an inexpensive and good-looking way to minimize the risk of skin cancer and keep yourself looking youthful. Everyone should wear a hat outside.

How do I care for my D.P wool hat?

Asked by: AZ Hiker 2015
Here are the cleaning instructions as provided by Dorfman Pacific: Perspiration will definitely affect the look of your hat, usually resulting in white (salt) stains or dark (oil) stains around the crown. These can usually be cleaned with a diluted mixture of Dawn dish soap and warm water. Do not submerge the hat but rather use a clean sponge to dab the stains. Dry it immediately with a clean paper towel, absorbing all of the excess water from the hat. This step may need to be repeated several times depending on the staining. Use this same method on the inner sweatband to remove the dirt. Again, several applications may be required. To help prevent future staining, wipe off all of the excess moisture after removing your hat. If it is very wet, turn it upside down and fold out the sweatband to allow the moisture to evaporate into the air.

My hat lost it's shape. One side of the brim tilts much lower than the opposite side. It looks awkward when I wear it, as if my head is tilted. I tried steaming it then securing it in proper shape - didn't work. Is there a way to reshape the hat?

Asked by: CmpCAW
If steaming your hat does not work, you may want to consider wetting your hat completely before reshaping it.

Is it better to size up or down? I tried on a small (too tight), and a medium (a touch too loose). Head circumference is 56 cm, pretty much between both sizes. Better to size up and attach a chin strap? Or will it shrink down?

Asked by: sheeebert
We recommend to order the size up if you are in between sizes.
