Excellent tubular nylon - perfect for rocketry!
I purchased this tubular nylon webbing for the recovery system of my high powered rocket. The nylon has more resilience than the other commonly used material, Kevlar. The REI specialist was very helpful as he measured out the 35' I purchased. Regarding the actual width of this product, it is indeed 9/16". It may technically be a fraction over that, but it is most definitely NOT 5/8" (as mentioned by another reviewer). I checked it multiple times with a digital caliper, and it doesn't lie. 9/16 = 0.563", my measurement was 0.581"... pretty darn close!
Good Purchase
I really like this tubular Webbing; more than I thought I would. I bought a piece to reinforce the stingy top hanger strap on an old backpack. It is soft and smooth, visually pops, easy to work with and Most Important - adds a thick yet pliable Sturdiness.
Actual size varies a *LOT*
I have been buying "15 mm" webbing from REI for years, and some colors, especially the black climspec, vary quite a bit. True 5/8" is about 16 mm, 15mm is the standard, and 9/16" is about 14 mm. I always weigh the material to determine the true size and strength (latter is roughly proportional to square of width). For the last two years, the bluewater black has been about 90% the weight/ft of the 15 mm, and is closer to 9/16" that I used to buy back in the 70s and 80s; it is also visibly thinner than 15mm. Yet when I look at the spools, it is labeled as 5/8". The same store may sell blue or red tubular with varying labels, and it is closer to 15mm. Caveat Emptor.
Perfect for binding large bungee cord
This webbing is perfect for binding large diameter bungee cord for attaching hardware. By using a modified prusik knot, take your time working the knot into position. Viola' custom length bungee assemblies for any challenge!
Quality Webbing
I used 33 ft of this webbing to make a dog leash. All I had to do was tie two water knots (1 for the wrist loop and 1 for the snap link. This replaced a similar leash I made with 1” tubular webbing about 7 years ago. This is much lighter and doesn’t drag as much. It may last even longer than it’s predecessor.
Great dog lead line!
In my youth I used this for pro and runners for lead climbs; now it works great as a 15 to 30 foot lead line for my newly rescued German Shepherd so he gets the sense that he is off leash and learns to make better decisions but if I need to get his attention or stop him I can just tug on the line or step on it. Attached to his harness with a carabiner which is attached to the webbing with a followthrough overhand knot. Easier to handle than parachute cord and without the threat of friction burn. Doesn`t get tangled up. Little or no abrasion wear so far.
Great Strapping Material
Great strapping material. Super strong and easy to sew together. I’ve been buying it for years to make straps.
5/8" not 9/16"
This is nice strong webbing but I wanted 9/16" to fit 9/16" ladderloc buckles for barefoot running sandals. This is definitely 5/8" width so the description is wrong... I'm surprised no-one has noticed this before!
Great for hammocks
I used two 12' pieces of this to hang my hammock. It's lightweight and strong, and knots come out easily.
Great for slacking!
Great for slack lining when set up with 5 oval carabiners.
